I. Authorship
Jose de la Cruz (21 December 1746 12 March 1829) was a Tagalog poet and
playwright in the 18th and 19th century. He was said to be the mentor oI Francisco
Balagtas, the author oI Florante at Laura. De la Cruz was popularly known by his
nickname, Huseng Sisiw, because oI his Iondness oI eating chicks. De la Cruz was
born in Tondo, Manila on 21 December 1746 to Simon de la Cruz and Maria Naval.
His Iather was a cabeza de barangay at the time oI his birth.
A neighbor taught him to read his Iirst letters. He started to learn the cartilla (Spanish
primer) and, later on, the caton (advanced Spanish reader). He then went on to study
the prayer book and the catechism oI the Christian doctrine. By the age oI eight, he
was already Iluent in the Spanish language. It is not clear, however, how he was able
to learn how to speak Latin and Greek. De la Cruz was a skilled poet and writer. He
could deliver lyric verses and even write dramas on the spur oI the moment. On one
occasion, he was invited to stage his plays during a town Ieast in the province oI
Batangas. He brought his works with him and asked the parish priest to choose which
one his company oI actors would stage. Instead oI choosing Irom his collection, the
priest ordered him to stage a play based on a historical event. In just one night,
Huseng Sisiw was able to create a story and teach the lines to his actors. The play was
a success. There are also claims that he could simultaneously dictate poems to Iive
diIIerent scribes, all at the same time.
Aspiring writers and poets Ilocked to him to seek his advice and to learn the art oI
creating Tagalog poems. One oI these poets was Francisco Balagtas, who would later
be known as the 'Father oI Tagalog literature. Churchmen also sought his help in
editing their sermons, as he was well-versed with the Bible. At one time, De la Cruz
also became a critic oI Tagalog comedias which were to be shown at the Tondo
Theater.
It was said that de la Cruz never became contented with his works, so that only a Iew
were actually published. The Iollowing are those oI his works which are listed by
writers Jose Maria Rivera and Julian C. Balmaceda.

III. Lesson Learned

I think the main idea oI it all is to remain good in spite oI the evil that may be done to
you as you will get your just reward later on. As Iar as Filipino cultural insights we
have the II:

1. The high level oI love and respect children have Ior their parents. In the story the
princes went out in search Ior the mystical bird to cure their beloved Iather.

2. The unwavering care oI the children to their parents especially in their old age.
Insight: Their Iather who is king was gravely ill and they were all willing to set out on
an impossible journey just so they can save his liIe.

3. Forgiveness and Iamily loyalties. In spite oI the bad things his brothers have done
to him the youngest prince still Iound them trust worthy and Iorgave them.

4. Be proud Ior the good deed done is spite oI the Iact that it may not be recognized.
To the youngest prince it doesn't matter iI his brothers got the credit Ior bringing the
mystical bird as long as he knew it was he who has done it and that this will make the
patriarch oI the Iamily better.

5. Honoring commitments. Well, especially to women as the princes made promises
and eventually IulIilled them aIter overcoming the obstacles.
