Four metaparadigms of nursing and Emogene King s theory of goal attainment

PERSON described as those that receive nursing care. Needs to include not only the individuals, but also their family and community. As it applies to King s theory the individual is able to set goals and find a way to work towards those goals. A person is an open system who is social, purposeful and action oriented.( Taken from text book pgs97-98 and from pg 367 journal of advanced nursing).

HEALTH Described as a state of well being. Kings theory views ilness as an imbalance in a persons biological structure which affects all relationships including social and psychologial. From text book pgs 107-108)

ENVIRONMENT Where the patient is, any internal or external things that effect the patient. Also where nursing care is given.King has no real definition of environment. She deals more with how the individuals as an open system and their environment interact. Also the stressors generated by the internal or external environments ( from text book page 107-108 and journal of advanced nursing 1989 page 367).

NURSING described as whats done while giving care to patients.Kings theory deals with the communication between the nurse and patient working together to set and meet goals. The main goal according to King s theory is maintaining health so the patient can function in their roles whatever they may be.Should be noted that according to King health not only includes the individual, but also the people and community surrounding them.
