Multiplex Section Protection 1/5

Multiplex Section Protection

The Multiplex Section Protection (MS Protection) function protects against channel- associated failures within a multiplex section. Protection switching is performed at the Multiplex Section level, whereas in SNCP ring protection switching is performed at the Path level. MS-SPRing

Multiplex Section Protection 2/5

MS Protection includes linear multiplex section protection (1+1, 1:N) and multiplex section protection ring (MS-SPRing) (two-fiber or four-fiber). The Multiplex Section performs a protection switch from the working channel to the protection channel or restores the working channel from the protection channel by exchanging information sent via the K1, K2 bytes of the two NEs. Factors affecting MS Protection switching can be the current status of the multiplex section itself, current status of the optical fiber, received K-byte signaling, externally initialized commands, or local system failure. The MS Protection Automatic Protection Switch (APS) controller is conceptually described in the following figure. Conceptual Operation of an MS Protection APS Controller

Multiplex Section Protection 3/5

In a NetRing 10000-I system, Modules participating in the MS-SPRing must be inserted in specific slot pairs. All these pairs are shown in the figure below: NetRing 10000-I MS Protection Slot Pairs

Multiplex Section Protection 4/5

The slot pairs are: 3-IU1 and 4-IU2, 5-IU3 and 6-IU4, 7-IU5 and 8-IU6, 11IU7 and 12-IU8, 13-IU9 and 14-IU10. An example of a MS-SPRing optical fiber connection is shown in the figure below: Example of MS-SPRing Optical Fiber Connection

Multiplex Section Protection 5/5

In the diagram above, modules involved in the MS-SPRing are inserted in MS connected to slot 4. Then the other end of the optical fiber is connected to the method for properly setting up an MS Protection ring.
