TITLE:
WHEREAS: Supporting a Diverse and Compassionate Environment at Iowa State University The 2010 State of Higher Education for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People report conducted in conjunction with Campus Pride and researchers at Iowa State University and Penn State University showed alarming trends in bullying and harassment of LGBT students on college campuses across the country, and the report showed LGBT students experience more than twice as many incidents of harassment and derogatory remarks than their heterosexual peers, and the nation has seen an alarming rate of suicides of LGBT teenagers in the past month, including college students at Rutgers University and Johnson and Wales, and the Iowa State University and the Government of the Student Body prides themselves on being a diverse campus that enriches the lives of all students and the Ames community, be it therefore, that the Government of the Student Body send a strong message to our entire student body that bullying and harassment are not values that our Cyclone family will tolerate, and that GSB supports a richly diverse campus that respects and accepts ALL students, including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender students, and that the Government of the Student Body Senate encourages the Dean of Students, Vice President for Student Affairs, Executive Vice President and Provost, and the President of Iowa State University to look into ways to improve the campus climate for all students, including LGBT students, and prevent tragedies like those experienced at Rutgers and Johnson and Wales in the past month, and that copies of this resolution be sent to Dean of Students, Dr. Dione Somerville; Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Tom Hill; Executive Vice President and Provost, Dr. Elizabeth Hoffman; President of ISU, Dr. Gregory Geoffrey; State of Iowa Board of Regents; University of Iowa Student Government; University of Northern Iowa Student Government; the Iowa State Daily; and the Des Moines Register.
