MECHANISM OF ACTION Inhibits cell wall synthesis during microorganism multiplication Therapeutic effect: kills susceptible bacteria.
INDICATION Lower respiratory tract infection, otitis media, sinusitis, skin and soft tissue infection, UTI, pre and post surgical procedures, bone and joint, O&G infection, dental infections
SIDE EFFECTS AND ADVERSE REACTIONS Diarrhea Nausea skin rashes and urticaria vaginitis abdominal discomfort flatulence and headache
NURSING RESPONSIBILITI ES Assess patients infection before starting therapy regularly thereafter to monitor drugs effectiveness. Before giving, ask the patient about any allergic reactions to penicillin, cephalosporins and cephamycins. Negative history of penicillin allergy is no guarantee against future allergic reactions.
Obtain specimen for culture and sensitivity test before first dose. Start therapy pending test results. Assess renal, cardiac and vascular conditions with physical exams and laboratory testing before start of therapy. Be alert for adverse reactions and drug interactions. Observe patient closely. Large doses and prolonged therapy raise the risk of neutropenia and bacterial and fungal superinfection
especially in an elderly, debilitated, or immunosuppres sed patient. Assess patients and familys knowledge of drug therapy.
