Emeraude Lights Up the Limestone in Halong Bay

In May 2012, several dozen passengers of Emeraude Classic Cruises, bedecked in black ties and gowns, will descend the gangplank and ascend a limestone pathway to the torch-lit grotto for a gala dinner. By ELEANOR LOPEZ

here is no more picturesque space in the world to dine, says Kurt Walter, group general manager of the Apple Tree Hospitality Group. Elsewhere you might have great views, as you do from the entrance to Surprise Grotto, but as often as not youll be dining on a plain, old deck. With us, youre dining in the magnificent maw of a limestone grotto. Ranked as the number one tourist attraction in Vietnam, the bay was named after the mythical Descending Dragon who protected Vietnam from ocean invaders. The jewels and jade that were used as missiles are said to have combined to form the 1,960 islets that pepper the mesmerising aquamarine waters. The lavish social event which is reminiscent of the regions gilded age takes place on May 2627 and will be the 8th Annual Wine Cruise for the Emeraude, but the first since Halong Bay was recognised as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. In celebration of gourmet food prepared by top international chefs and sumptuous wine, the wine cruise will set sail at the end of May just as northern Vietnam slides into its stunning summer

season. With lighter nights and warm seas, the stage is set for a dazzling gal dinner amidst stunning limestone formations. The in-grotto dinner which has been held annually since 2005, will be accompanied by vintages from the Rhone Valleys M. Chapoutier Winery, including the Condrieu Invitare, CrozesHermitage Les Meysonniers La Bernardine Chateauneuf du Pape , and Les Becasses Cote Rotie from Condrieu, a village in Frances Rhone Valley. A representative from M Chapoutier, Stephen Barlerin, will join the cruise.
