Chapter 1: Introduction to Chemistry

A. Chemistry and Its Importance

Definition: Study of the composition, structure, properties and interactions of matter Chemistry related careers: Aqua culturist Bacteriologist Biochemist Chemical engineer Cosmetic scientist Doctor Environmental scientist Food technologist Forensic scientist Geologist Horticulturalist Nutritionist Laboratory technician Pathologist Pharmacist

B. Scientific Method

1.

Making observations:

Gathering information about a phenomenon using our 5 senses 2. Making an inference:

Making a smart guess about the phenomenon based on observation 3. Identifying the problem:

Asking question(s) based on the inference 4. Making hypothesis:

Making a general statement about the relationship of the manipulated variable & responding variable 5. Identifying variables:

Identifying the manipulated, responding and fixed variable of an experiment to test the hypothesis 6. Controlling variables:

Decide how to manipulate the chosen variable, what to measure & how to keep the fixed variable 7. Collecting data:

Making observations/measurements & recording data 8. Interpreting data:

Organising & analyzing data 9. Making conclusion:

Making statement about the outcome of the experiment & whether the hypothesis is accepted or rejected 10. Writing report

Writing down the details of the experiment & find a benefit to the findings

Scientific attitudes & noble values should be instilled in all investigations
