Is -1.

5 a Rational Number
Is -1.5 a Rational Number Every time when we have to check if any given number is a rational number or not then the condition of rational number existence should be satisfied for that particular given number. We will test the same for the given number -1.5 . When we have to check that any particular given number is a rational number or not, we must first recall what all are rational numbers. Rational numbers are the numbers which can be expressed in form of m / n where m and n are integers and n <> 0 ('<>' means not equal to). Here initially, when we look at the number -1.5, we observe that -1.5 is not an integer so it cannot be expressed in form of a rational number.

But look again carefully as the same number -1.5 can also be written as -15 / 10. We get this by removing the decimal from -1.5. Again observe the number -15 / 10. Here -15 and 10 both are integers and the two integers are in the form of m / n. Moreover, 10 is the denominator and here 10 <> 0. As denominator is not 0 (zero), we relate the above statements with the definition of rational number 1) Both numerator and denominator are integers 2) Denominator is not zero. Both the conditions of rational numbers are satisfied, so we conclude that -15 / 10 is a rational number. Again observe that -15 / 10 is the same number as -1.5. So we can easily say that -1.5 is a rational number.
