Jessica Ovina Yaury The Beauty (Re)discovers the Male Body by Bordo explains about how and where

a male model is positioned in advertising. In Rocks and Leaners, Bordo discusses that there are thee types of male modeling that advertisers use to display products to create a certain kind of image, thus recreating masculinities. The three poses Bordo talked about are I am a rock(186), Face-off(188), and The lean(188). Rocks emphasizes on classic views of masculinity. The models stare coldly at the viewer, defying the observer to view them in any way other than how they have chosen to present themselves: as powerful, armored, emotionally impenetrable(186). Face off creates a stare contest, which the model shows that he is watching you watch him. The lean shows a nontraditional forms of masculinity. It is often used in a seductive way. The male model provides a more alluring look, giving the viewer thoughts of dominating him. Today, I bring a combined photograph, displaying three different form of modeling. The first model is taking the classic rock posture, staring directly into the camera, challenging the viewer to look away. The second image depicts what Bordo described as the lean, having a young model leaning against a wall with arm raised, looking at the viewer seductively. The last ad represents the face off, where the model is depicted as being full of masculinity, having muscular body with his hands near his crotch and glaring down the camera. In my opinion, this essay is very interesting. It presents a view about body image and how it relates to advertisements that I never thought about before. Whereas body is usually connected with women, its great that this essay focused on mans body and brings up an important point that nowadays, its fine for a man to care about how he looks and to cultivate an openly erotic style (193).
