Materials -Smart Board -Theme Power Point presentation -Students' Writer's notebooks -Practice narratives Procedures Warm Up (~8 min.)
Preface the lesson by asking students to raise their hand if they have ever heard the fable "The Boy Who Cried Wolf." Ask students to recap the story and verbalize the "point" or the "message" of the story. Explain that almost all narratives contain an underlying Theme, and that the theme is just the "message of the story" or the "moral of the story." Tell students to pull out their Writer's notebooks and prepare to take notes on Theme while I give a presentation on how readers can identify a book's theme. Show PPT presentation, elaborating and expounding on points as I go along. o allow time for practice where necessary
Practice/Homework: (~ 5 min.)
Ask students to write a ~rough~ expository paragraph about the developing theme of their Literature Circle novel. Whatever they don't finish in class is their homework.
Assessment
Evaluate the discussion that starts the lesson Collect expository paragraphs on S's novel theme.
