Material and apparatus

Technique

To study how wind affect the rate of transpiration Does the faster air movement increase the rate of transpiration The faster the air movement, the higher the rate of transpiration Manipulated variable:The movement of air Responding variable :The rate of transpiration Constant variable :The number of leaves Young balsam plants of the similar sizes with the same number of leaves, cooking oil, cotton wool, conical flask, fan and electronic balance Measuring the weight of water that loss using an electric balance

Discussions

1. Two weight potometers was set up as shown in the diagram above. 2. The initial reading of the electronic balance was taken 3. Room potometer A was near a fan.The fan was switching on. 4. Room potometer B was condition as a control experiment. 5. The final reading of the electronic after 3o minutes was taken 6. The result was tabulated and the rate of transpiration is equal to the rate of water loss. Initial mass(g)Final mass(g)Amount of water loss (initial-final mass)Rate of transpiration(g/min) Potometer A:138.95-125.99 =12.96/30 min =0.432 Potometer B:137.79-137.69 =0.07/30 min =0.002 1) The same types of plants and the same number of leaves used because it contains same number of stomata. 2) The oil was put on the surface og water because want to prevent from the air in the water will going outside. 3) The cotton wool was used put in the opening of conical flask to prevent the other substances likes insect and dust to go into the water that will be affecting when take the reading. 4) The wind from the fan will remove the water vapous of the surrounding air. 5) The surrounding air bacame dry. 6) Therefore, the rate of transpiration increased. The hyphothesis was accepted. The faster the air movement, the higher the rate of transpiration.
