PART I: DATA QUESTIONS

1. 2. 3.

y = -64.815x3 + 646.83x2 + 394.18x + 20016 The curve we chose for our data was cubic. We predict that there will be negative 590,000 cases in the next five years, this does not make sense since there cannot be a negative number of cases.

4.

We predict that in five years the number of new cases per year will be 9,000 new cases; this makes sense because awareness and better resources will help decrease that number.

PART II: ARTICLE QUESTIONS (3-4 Complete sentences per question)

1.

The major factors for the spread of AIDS in Myanmar are that there are many IDUs (intravenous drug users), meaning that they use needles to inject drugs into their systems. Many of these users share needles with each other and if one of them has HIV or AIDS then the rest of the people that use his or her needle become infected as well. There are also many sex workers and when they have sex with others they dont use condoms. One thing that they are doing in Myanmar to decrease the spread of HIV and AIDS is that they hold public campaigns spreading awareness about HIV and AIDS. Those campaigns also make condoms more available and provide STI testing and treatment for those people who need it.

2.

Some of the barriers that contribute to the spread of HIV and AIDS are unsafe sex and not getting tested for STIs. Some other barriers are that people arent taught about the risks of unsafe sex or the importance of using condoms. Also that testing isnt available for many pregnant women who might have HIV or AIDS. 4. We suggest that Myanmar have more programs in schools that teach about STIs, the importance of condoms, the importance of getting tested for STIs, etc. We also suggest that Myanmar have more clinics that offer free testing and treatment of HIV and AIDS since many people are too poor to afford testing and treatment themselves.
3.

PART III: WHITE PAPER

AIDS in Asia In the early mid 1980s, while other parts of the world were dealing with the AIDS epidemic, Asia remained relatively unaffected. It wasnt until the early 1990s that AIDS started to appear in different parts of the country and not until the end of that decade that it started spreading across the country. Contributing Factors Some of the major factors for the spread of AIDS in Myanmar are the number of sex workers and intravenous drug users in the country. People also arent taught about the importance of using condoms while having sex and getting tested for STIs. Data Analysis

In Myanmar the number of HIV cases increased steadily for a few years and after a while started to decrease. Predictions We predict that in the years to come, the number of HIV and AIDS cases will decrease due to awareness and better resources.
Recommendations We recommend that Myanmar have condoms more readily available throughout the country and that they have more programs that teach children the risks of unsafe sex and using intravenous drugs. Also that they have more clinics that have free testing for STIs since a lot of people cant afford to pay it themselves.
