Module VI Respiratory System

Assessment

Identify these parts of the Respiratory System:

1.

_______

Mouth Throat (pharynx) Nasal Cavity Diaphragm Bronchus Trachea Nose Alveoli Bronchiole Lung Ribs

2. _______ 3. _______ 4. _______ 5. _______ 6. _______ 7. _______ 8. _______ 9. _______ 10. 11.
_______ _______

A H

C D E F I J

Match the parts of the Respiratory System with their function:

12. Cilia 13. Trachea 14. Diaphragm 15. Epiglottis 16. Nasal Cavity 17. Larynx 18. Alveoli 19. Pharynx 20. Lungs 21. Bronchi 22. Rib Cage 23. Bronchioles

A. The part of the throat through which air goes through the lungs and food to the esophagus. B. Tiny hair-like projections in the airways that sweep mucus and dirt out of the lungs. C. Rigid tube with cartilage rings that connects the larynx to the bronchi. D. Two large tubes that branch- off the trachea and carry air into the lungs. E. The main respiratory organ where blood is oxygenated. F. Protects the lungs. G. Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange takes place. H. Contains the vocal cords. I. The main muscle used for breathing. J. Warms and humidifies air and traps dust. K. Tens of thousands of tiny branching tubes that connect to alveoli. L. The flap of cartilage that stops food from entering the trachea (windpipe).

24. Explain how our lung model is similar to our own respiratory system. Be sure to include how the balloon fills with air (inhales) and empties of air (exhales). Also, be sure to identify which parts of the model represent specific parts of our human respiratory system. Label the diagram if you like.
Your answer:

25. Explain how the circulatory system and respiratory system work together. Be sure to include what work is accomplished.

Table 1 (below) shows data from blood samples taken throughout the body. Use this data and the following information to answer questions 26 33.

Analyzing Data:

Oxygen is a measure of the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood. Carbon Dioxide is a measure of the amount of waste gas in the blood. It is a poison to the body. Blood Sugar is a measure of the amount of simple sugars (nutrients) carried in the blood. Urea is a measure of the amount of cellular waste carried in the blood. It is a poison to the body.

26. Which graph shows what happens to the oxygen level in the blood as blood travels through the head?

28. Where in the body does the blood pick up a high concentration of blood sugar? Use the specific data (numbers) in your answer.

29. Where in the body is urea removed from the blood? Use the specific data (numbers) in your answer.

30. What happens to oxygen levels in the blood as blood passes through the arms, legs, and liver? Why does this happen?

31. What happens to blood sugar levels as blood passes through the arms, legs, and liver? Why does this happen?

32. Besides the intestines, where in the body are levels of urea the highest? Why does this happen?

33. Based on the data, make a statement about the function of the human body that has not already been mentioned on this assessment?
