Assessment and management of ageing of major nuclear power plant components important to safety: Concrete containment buildings
ageing management is defined as the engineering, operations and maintenance actions to control within acceptable limits ageing degradation and wear out of systems, structures or components. The design life of existing NPPs was often chosen to be 30-40 years. However, current economic pressures on utilities to extend plant service life (60 years total being a quoted target) and decommissioning strategies that involve use of the containment as a "safestore" for periods of up to 100 years mean that the containment buildings may have to perform safety functions for a time period significantly greater than their initial design life.
