Georgia DOE Media Center Evaluation Rubric


Before Spring Break, Mrs. Herzog and I sat down with the Georgia Department of Education Media Center Evaluation Rubric and went over it together. Attached is the rubric which shows that we are at basic (or below) in most areas on the rubric. The highlighted areas are where we placed the media center program. Also attached are recommendations for us to address one of the basic indicators and bring it up to proficient or exemplary.

Action Plan to Improve Category I

Indicator 1: Information literacy standards, as defined in QCC Standards, are integrated into content instruction. Indicator 3: Professional library media staff is engaged in active teaching role/s. Indicator 6: Student achievement is routinely assessed. Category one (1) proved to have many issues. To bring these basic scores to proficient or exemplary the following steps should be taken: Stand-alone lessons concerning information literacy (research skills, website/resource evaluation, etc) Should be developed by the SLMS and should explicitly foster critical thinking skills and independent inquiry Lessons that have been created should be advertised in the monthly Media Center newsletter and should be available upon request and on a professional learning wiki for easy access.

The SLMS should become more involved in a teaching role and should differentiate all lessons for diverse learners. The SLMS should collaborate with each teacher on a regular basis to discuss assessment that may or may not have taken place in the media center. Teachers should be willing to share student information with the SLMS to determine what is best for his/her student. The SLMS should work with grade levels to design tools for assessing student achievement. These lessons should be advertised in the monthly Media Center newsletter
