English 102: Short Paper #3 2-3 pages Due April 24th

Option #1 Character Analysis Compare and contrast Nelson Reed and Harold Green from the story A Loaf of Bread. What similarities do you notice between these two characters. What differences? Discuss the central conflict in the story. What motivates or drives each character into action? How does each character perceive the conflict? Are the characters dynamic or static? Explain how they change over the course of the story. Refer back to the texts, including at least one quote, as you move through your character study. Option #2 The Individual vs. Society Summarize the short story The Lottery. Why do you think the whole town participates in this event? Do you believe that people are propelled into action more so by social forces or by individual psychological drives? Refer back to this text and another text of your choice as you discuss what motivates people to take part in problematic group actions. *Option #3 Making Connections Between Literature & History-Extra Credit Opportunity Take a trip to the Holocaust Center. Sign in on the sheet so that I know you visited the center. Walk around the center. Listen to at least five different stories from survivors. Take notes about what you hear and see. Write a short reflection paper about your experience in the center. What did you learn? How does it relate to what you read in Maus? Include two quotes from Maus in your reflection on your experience. Be sure to organize this paper with a clear thesis statement that focuses on the connection between Maus and your experience in the Holocaust Center. *Option #4 Dreamweaver -Extra Credit Opportunity Event: Wednesday April 4th 1:30-3:00 PM Attend the dramatic performance of Langston Hughes poetry. Write a review of the event, pointing out what you liked and disliked about the performance. Would you recommend this event to others? Your introductory paragraph should summarize the play and lead into your thesis statement: your opinion about the event. Your body paragraphs should support and justify your opinion.

*Avoid over unsupported generalizations. (ie. The performance was good/The performance was bad). If you plan to make this argument, draw your support from an actual example from the performance Make sure to include the following elements in your paper: an introductory paragraph that gets the readers attention and summarizes the event. a thesis statement that states the main themes addressed in the performance. Each paragraph should focus on the main themes and the strengths and/or weaknesses of the performance. concluding paragraph. Sum up the event and connect it to your knowledge of Langston Hughes and the class reading.
