WHY? WHY? WHY?

Q & A RELATED TO HOLY WEEK
If youre inquisitive like me perhaps the events, hymns, Scripture readings, icons, etc. surrounding Holy Week have generated some questions over the years. In the pursuit of answering my own inquiries I encountered some very interesting explanations and other Patristic tidbits related to Holy Week and thought it prudent to share them with you.

Why did the Lord chose Judas if He knew that he was a traitor?
Judas was chosen among the twelve apostles to have charge of the money bag, to lay it out upon the poor, that it might not seem as though he had betrayed the Lord because he had not honor or need (i.e, Judas received honor from his office, and his needs were taken care of). Therefore the Lord granted Judas this office, that He might also be justified in him who would be guilty of a greater fault, not as one driven to it by a wrong done to him, but as one misusing grace. (St. Ambrose of Optina).

Why didn't Christ defend Himself? Why was He silent?

The Lord became the defender of truth, and came in silence before Pilate, on behalf of truth which had been oppressed (John 18:37-38). Others gain victory through making defenses, but our Lord gained victory through His silence, because the recompense of His death through divine silence was the victory of true teaching. He spoke in order to teach, but kept silent in the tribunal. He was not silent over that which was exalting us, but He did not struggle against those who were provoking Him. The worlds of His accusers, like a crown on His head, were a source of redemption. He kept silent so that His silence would make them shout even louder, and so that His crown would be made more beautiful through all this clamor. (St. Ephraim the Syrian)

Why did the Lord curse the fig tree?

Our Lord cursed the fig tree so the disciples might have confidence. For because everywhere He conferred benefits, but punished no man. He needed to demonstrate for them proof of His power to take vengeance for two reasons: first, so that the disciples might learn; and second, so that the Jews might learn, that He was able to blast them that crucify Him, but submitted of His own will and did not blast them. For it was not His will to demonstrate this vengeance upon men; but He furnished the proof of His might in taking vengeance on the fig tree. But when anything like this is done to places, to plants, or to animals, do not be curious, nor say that the fig tree was unfairly dried up because it was not the time of figs for this it is the most trifling thing to say. Rather, behold the miracle, and adcontinued on pg3 mire and glorify its Maker. (St. Chrysostom)

-Fr. Marks Letter

Why would we blame the Hebrews for their disbelief, when God has blinded their eyes?
They could not believe, because Isaiah so prophesied, as God told him what their situation would be. But, if you ask: what was the reason of their disbelief, I will instantly answer: They did not want to. As God foresaw their corrupted will, He so foretold His prophet, as the future is not hidden from Him.God blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, as He forsook them, and denied them His care. (St. Augustine)

Why the washing of the feet?

He who has been washed has need still to wash his feet[for] in holy baptism a man has all of him washed, not everything but his feet, but every part. But after living in this human state, he cannot fail to tread on the ground with his feet, Thus our human feelings themselves, which are inseparable from our mortal life on earth, are like feet with which we come into sensible contact with human affairs Therefore, every day He who intercedes for us is washing our feet. We, too have a daily need to be washing our feet, that is ordering aright the path of our spiritual footsteps, we acknowledge even in the Lord's prayer, when we say, "Forgive us our trespasses as we also forgive those who trespass against us." For "If we confess out sins," then truly He who washed His disciples' feet is "faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9) Accordingly the Church, which Christ cleanses with the washing of water in the Word, is without spot and wrinkle; not only in the case of those who are taken away immediately after the washing of regeneration, but in those who also have experienced such mercy from the Lord so as to be enabled to quit this present life even with feet that have tarried on the earth. But although the Church is also clean in respect of those who tarry on earth, because they live righteously; they still need to be washing their feet, because they assuredly are not without sin. This is why it is said in the Song of Songs, "I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them?" For one so speaks when he is constrained to come to Christ, and in so coming has to bring his feet into contact with the ground. (St. Augustine)

Philoxenia House News

Great news! Finally it has happened! We had planned the demolition of the white uninhabitable h1ouse after the mortgage was paid off. On November of 2011, Philoxenia House negotiated with the bank holding our mortgage on two properties. The two mortgages were combined into one and the loan interest was reduced from 7.5% to 4.65%. By combining the mortgages we were free to move up the demolition schedule. On February 28th 2012 the building was torn down. Trevor and Johnny Mangouras obtained estimates ranging from $35,000. to $50,000. including the asbestos removal. However, Johnny contacted the Fraser Construction Company who did the job for $16,500. about half the estimated quote. With the exception of the grading and disconnecting the water from the main line, the job will be completed in the spring. As you all know, this third property serves the purpose of meeting the space requirements for our planned Philoxenia Village. We are most grateful to all our Philoxenia House friends who have supported, encouraged and showed great love and understanding toward our Ministry. We have had many guests this past year and we as a caring parish have tried to offer them our love, friendship and help in various capacities This is the second positive step toward the Philoxenia Village. First the refinancing of our mortgages, and now the tearing down the white house and preparing the lot for future construction. The Philoxenia Committee worked very hard the 2011 year toward fund raising and trying to reduce our yearly expenses. So many people responded very positively to our needs because they think this is one of the best causes any church, big or small, has done! Thank you, thank you all for your love! Updating projects are being defined to make our currently available units more livable. Some projects will be done by church member handymen on a small budget. As funding and scheduling permit, more complicated projects requiring tradesmen will be scheduled to keep units available to guests. If you like to volunteer your services for a few hours at the Philoxenia House we would really appreciate it. I know everyone is busy now, but think about us after Pascha. The Philoxenia House Committee humbly acknowledges and thanks our fellow committee member Johnny Mangouras for the most incredible lunch during the visit of His Grace 0Bishop Demetrios of Mokissos to our church. Thank you Johnny for the many hours you and your staff and volunteers spend in creating a Lenten gourmet experience, and for donating the proceeds of the luncheon to Philoxenia House. With caring people like you the Philoxenia House will continue to go but forward! May God's blessings be showered upon you!

And when He drew near, already at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began rejoicing and to be praising God with a loud voice for all the works of power they saw, saying, Blessed is the King Who cometh in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven and glory in the highest. Philoptochos Society
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This is a busy time for the Society with commitments during Holy Week and spring fundraisers. Since I have become President I have learned that the Philoptochos Society is the churchs hub for volunteers! This is especially true during Holy Week; where it is the Philoptochos members that volunteer their time to decorate the church with flowers, to dye eggs and to fill in any great need for the church and for God. Here are is the list of times volunteers are needed for upcoming events: Palm Sunday preparations: Saturday, April 7th at 10:30am in the church kitchen for food prep work. Sunday, April 8th at 9 am in the church kitchen to prepare the meal and at 10:30 to set up the hall. Ann Kolas is the chairperson. Pascha egg dying: at 10:30am on Thursday April 12th in the church kitchen. Penny Kolas is the chairperson. Pascha flowers: 1pm on Thursday April 12th in the church library to cut and prepare the flowers and 9am on Friday April 13th to decorate the Kouvouklion. The children will decorate the base of the Kouvouklion at 11am. Maria Petersen is the chairperson for the Pascha flowers. I am in charge of the childrens flowers. Fashion Show: We are looking for a few good men to help Johnny Mangouras in the kitchen of the Barlow Event Center on both Saturday, April 28th (food prep) and Sunday April 29th during the fundraiser from about 1pm to 5pm. As you know; our Philoptochos Society holds many fundraisers throughout the year with most of the proceeds going to Orthodox missions, organizations, and schools, nationally or abroad. The proceeds from two of our upcoming fundraisers will go directly to our Holy Anargyroi Philoptochos chapter and local charities. These fundraisers are the Palm Sunday Luncheon on April 8th after liturgy in the church hall and the High Tea and Champagne Fashion Show. The date of the fashion show is Sunday, April 29th at 3pm at the Barlow Event Center. Tickets are 15 dollars a person and please reserve your seat by contacting me at rochesterphiloptochos@gmail.com. We are asking women to come and bring five friends each. We will also have a raffle as part of our fundraiser and are looking for items to be raffled. Please see Ann Kolas or Jackie Barbes if you have something to donate. The Fashion Show is a very important fundraiser for our Philoptochos Society; please come and support our chapter and local charities. Thank you! In light of my six month anniversary as President; I would like to thank two special Philoptochos Society members: Maria Thomas and Penny Kolas. I have learned in my tenure that they are the quiet warriors for the Philoptochos. Maria, along with Father Mark, has given me suggestions and guidance to help the Philoptochos grow. Pennys enthusiasm and hard work for the Philoptochos strengthens the Society. With deep gratitude; I thank you both. Holy Week is an exciting time for us Orthodox Christians because of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ and also for the chance to participate in one of the seven Sacraments of the Orthodox Church on Holy Wednesday which is Holy Unction or Euchelaion the oil of prayer. The oil in this Sacrament is a sign of Gods presence, strength and forgiveness. We Orthodox Christians are seeking together in this Sacrament, the healing of soul and body and the forgiveness of sins. During the service there are seven Epistles and Gospel readings and seven prayers with each of the prayers asking for the remission of our sins, for the healing of our souls and bodies and for life everlasting. At the end of the service; Father Mark will anoint us faithful with the holy oil as he makes the sign of the cross on our foreheads and tops and palms of our hands while saying For the healing of soul and body. If our faith is strong and it is Gods will then by the Grace of God; we will be healed. Wishing you life in the light of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ! Christos Anesti! Youth Team Report

As we find ourselves on the threshold of Holy Week, we will take a moment to reflect on the numerous ways the Liturgical calendar has offered our youth opportunities to reflect their faith this month. Our Church School students held their icons high in the procession on Sunday of Orthodoxy, commemorating the restoration of the holy icons in worship and the victory of the Church against heresies. Liturgy was followed by Holy Anargyrois 4th Annual St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival. A number of brave souls offered speeches, essays, and a poem on a variety of topics: Zach and Jacob Brekke, Ali Ostfeld, Nour Mirza, Nina and Sebastian Munoz, Mariuca Jerghiuta, and Nia and Ana Kelly received hearty applause for their efforts. We are very proud of our participants!

JOY Children learned during their Faith Night about the armors of faith that help them stay on a path towards Christ. They learned to utilize spiritual gifts and armors of faith like the people of faith who came before us. We had a Bible reading Ephesians 6:10-11, 13-18 and prepared ourselves to walk with Christ through His last days, His death and His Resurrection, by going to confessions. In order to assist in our prayers we prepared and decorated 7 day candles, to be lit during Holy Week and also bring the Light home from the Resurrection service.

GOYA completed its programming for the month with a Lenten Lock-in after serving as readers for the Salutations service. The students went to confession, enjoyed a Lenten pot luck, discussed what it means to acquire the Holy Spirit and shine with the Light of Christ, and brainstormed how to overcome obstacles to that goal. Skits, games, and great fellowship kept us awake into the wee hours of the following day. Tired but happy, we agree its a tradition to continue!

Parish Council
Great Lent is half over, may God give us the strength we need to persevere to Pascha. A reminder of who the members of your parish council are for the 2012 year: Tim Kelly, President; Aaron Biedermann, Vice President; Dan Jerghiuta, Treasurer; Andru Peters, Secretary; Robert Lytle; Erlene Holman; Diana Orbelo; Tia Maragos; and Halina Woroncow. In this months newsletter we announce a parish assembly to be held on May 6, 2012. Please see the notice and the accompanying list of parishioners in good standing. What is considered a parishioner in good standing according the Church? The term parishioner is defined in the Uniform Parish Regulations, Article 18, Section 1: as Every person who is baptized and chrismated according to the rites of the Orthodox Church is a parishioner. You can read the rest of the paragraph to understand the religious, moral and social duties of a parishioner if you care to grasp what a high level of participation in the Orthodox Faith is the standard. The second paragraph that follows defines a parishioner in good standing as At a minimum, a parishioner in good standing must: be eighteen years of age or over; be current in his or her stewardship and other financial obligations to the Parish, abide by all the regulations herein stated and the Parish Bylaws; and cooperate in every way towards the welfare and well being of the Parish. Section 5 of Article 18 states that a parishioner in good standing has the right to attend, participate and vote at Parish Assemblies, as well as to vote in Parish Council elections. Well, that said, I am embarrassed to say that not one single parish council member that represents the present leadership of Holy Anargyroi Greek Orthodox Church has, or has seen, or remembers seeing a copy of Holy Anargyroi Parish Bylaws. Some past Parish Council members of the church have stated that they have, or have seen, the above mentioned bylaws, but to date no one has brought forth a copy of the document. Until such time that we have secured a copy of the Parish Bylaws we will be following the 2005 Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America to the best of our abilities and continue our search for the additional guidelines of our church. The definition of a quorum has been given to us by the Metropolis, and if we dont meet that standard for the May 6, 2012, Parish Assembly, we will be re-scheduling the assembly for the following Sunday. His Grace Bishop Demetrios of Mokissos visits Holy Anargyroi

At the midway point of the Lenten season our parish was blessed to receive a pastoral visit from His Grace Bishop Demetrios of Mokissos, Chancellor of the Metropolis of Chicago. His Grace's visit coincided with the feast of the Veneration of the Holy Cross. A magnificent hierarchal liturgy was celebrated culminating in the beautiful procession of the Live-giving and Saving Cross.

His Grace also offered a thoughtful homily on the role and nature of the Cross in the Christian daily life. After the morning services we gathered at the Barlow Event Center for a gourmet Lenten fare prepared by in-house chef, Johnny Mangouras.

His Grace was very complimentary to our parish citing our unique Philoxenia Ministry, strong and competent liturgical life, and the overall dedication and tenacity of our relatively small parish.

We would like to thank all those who made themselves available to help ensure that the necessary preparations for His Grace's visit were attended to. The many hours of hard work and planning were most appreciated and did not go unnoticed. Thank You!

You went down into the tomb, destroyed Hades' power, and rose the victor Christ God...
St. John Climacus Make the effort to raise up, or rather, to enclose your mind within the words of your prayer; and if, like a child, it gets tired and falters, raise it up again. The mind, after all, is naturally unstable, but the God Who can do everything can also give it firm endurance. Every virtuous act we doand this is particularly true of prayer-should be done with great sensitivity. A soul prays with sensitivity when it has overcome anger. St. Isaac The Syrian Every meditation upon spiritual things is fixed by prayer, is called by the name of prayer, and under its name is comprehended; whether you speak of various readings, or the cries of a mouth glorifying God, or a sorrowing reflection on the Lord, or making bows with the body, or the alleluias of psalmody, or all the other things from which the teaching of genuine prayer ensues.
\

Holy Pascha

St. Ephrem the Syrian Whether you are in church, or in your house, or in the country; whether you are guarding sheep, or constructing buildings, or present at drinking parties, do not stop praying. St. Ignaty Brianchaninov It is impossible for a person to turn with all his thought, with all his strength and with all his being towards God, except by the action of prayer. St. Nilus the Ascetic Prayer is the ascent of the mind towards God. It is a spiritual labour that befits the human mind more than any other preoccupation.

St. Theophan the Recluse If we compare prayer to a perfume, and the soul to a bottle for perfume, then we will understand that as perfume does not keep its fragrance in a container full of holes, also the soul cannot continue to pray if there is a lack of virtue.

Stewardship
We currently have 63 pledges, and we would like to thank all those who returned their stewardship packets. If you havent already done so, we ask that you prayerfully consider what you can offer back to God in support of His parish. Additional stewardship packets are located by the Church entrance in the Narthex. Please also note that this list will be referenced for the upcoming Parish Assembly on May 6th, 2012. We look forward to another successful and fruitful year in being blessed to serve our Lord together with our whole mind and heart; for the glory of His name, and for the building up of His beloved Church.
