Grade -8 / Physics

TO CALCULATE THE PRESSURE (P), USE THE EQUATION P = F / A WHERE F EQUALS THE FORCE APPLIED AND A EQUALS THE AREA. BE SURE TO WRITE THE EQUATION AND ALL UNITS.
1. Calculate the pressure on a mans foot when a woman who weighs 130N steps on his foot with her heel which has an area of 0.5 m2 with all her weight. 2. Calculate the pressure exerted on the floor when an elephant who weighs 6000 N stands on one foot which has an area of 20 m2 3. Calculate the pressure exerted on the heel of a boys foot if the boy weighs 80 N and he lands on one heel which has an area of 16 cm2. 4. How much must a woman weigh (force) if the pressure she exerts while standing on one foot which has an area of 30 m2 exerts a pressure of 4 N/m2 ? 5. What is the area of a car tire that touches the road if the cars weight on that tire is 768 N and the pressure exerted on the road is 12 N/ m2 ? 6. Calculate the pressure exerted on an elevator floor which is 2 meters deep and 3 meters wide, if 20 people whose combined weight is 1500N are standing on it. 7. How much pressure is exerted on a science lab desk which measures 24 inches deep and 30 inches long by the air column above it pushing down with a weight of 10,584 N. 8. How much pressure will be exerted on a divers body which has an area of 500 m2, if the water column above him weighs 30,000 N?

9. A woman walking in high heals can damage a hardwood floor by making small dimples in the floor since her weight is concentrated on such a small area (the tip of the high heal). If the woman weighs 100 N and the tip of the high heal is 1/15 m2 what is the pressure exerted on the floor by her high heal?

10. A box has the dimensions of 50 cm x 30 cm x 15 cm, weighs 150 N, and is to be placed on a fragile surface. The surface can only withstand a pressure of 0.25 N/cm2. Which faces of the box can be placed on the table?

Area of side A:

Area of side B:

Area of side C:

a) Pressure exerted when side A is placed on the surface: b) Pressure exerted when side B is placed on the surface: c) Pressure exerted when side C is placed on the surface: d) Which face/s of the box can be placed on the fragile surface? e) How did you reach your conclusion? f) How can you explain why this is the case?
