AER416 Flight Mechanics Assignment #2

Due: Monday March 26, 12:00pm

1) Calculate the normal and axial force per unit span (N and A) acting on an NACA 4415 airfoil at 14o. The airfoil chord is 0.44 m. Assume two-dimensional flow, standard sea level condition and airspeed of 100 m/s.

2) Consider an NACA 4415 finite wing with aspect ratio of 10. The span efficiency factor is 0.95. Calculate the lift and drag forces at 4o angle of attack. The airfoil chord is 0.44 m. Assume standard sea level condition and airspeed of 100 m/s.

3) Airspeed at the test section of a wind tunnel is 40 m/s. Lift and drag of a finite wing of area of 0.14 m2 and span of 92 cm are measured in the wind tunnel. At an angle of attack of -1o, the measured lift and drag are 0 and 0.8 N, respectively. At an angle of attack of 2o, the lift and drag are measured as 22.2 and 1.0 N, respectively. Calculate the span efficiency factor and the infinite-wing lift slop. Assume standard sea level condition. 4) Consider an aircraft with the following characteristics: wing area 30 m2, wing span 5 m, span efficiency factor 0.81, weight 88 kN, zero-lift drag coefficient 0.02. The airplane is equipped with two jet engines. Each engine has maximum thrust of 16 kN at standard sea level condition, and the engines thrust varies directly with free-stream density. a) Calculate and plot the thrust required at sea level. b) Calculate the maximum velocity and minimum-drag velocity at sea level. c) Calculate and plot the thrust required at 5 km altitude. d) Calculate the maximum velocity and minimum-drag velocity at 5 km altitude.
