2012 Summer Enrichment Camp Proposal

The Office of Curriculum & Instruction is now accepting teachers proposals for summer learning camps. The summer camps will be offered to students having a desire to extend their learning into the summer in an area of individual interest. Topics for camps might include a creative writing workshop, a hands on history week, a photography class, a STEM topics class, an AVID Enrichment Camp, an AP Boost Camp, an SAT Prep Camp, or a philosophy seminar, among many others. Enrollment should exceed ten students per teacher to offer the program. Camps will run from 8:15 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. Interested students could attend any one or more summer camps offered at any of the county schools. Camp Cost for Students: $50

Submit a Summer School Teacher Application to Human Resources by April 18. Submit this completed form to your principal by April 18. If you approve of this proposal, please sign and date at the bottom and fax to Dawn Corapi, Central Office, by April 23. (Fax: 301-766-8747) Keep a copy for records. Dr. Harrell and supervisors will meet to review proposals on April 25.

The Office of Curriculum & Instruction will announce all approved Enrichment Camps by April 30 however; actual running of each camp will be contingent upon budget and enrollment numbers. Approved camps will be advertised on the WCPS website and included in our summer programs brochure. For the camp to be successful, it is important that the enrichment camp teacher encourages interest and actively recruits and registers students.

Description (provide a brief course description to be used for the website and summer brochure):

Students will complete a STEAM PBL project in which they develop and design a solution to a real world problem. This process will build on a variety of reading, math, and writing skills. Students will choose/incorporate artistic styles into their design. The week will be capped off by a mini exhibition on Thursday in which students present their learning and work. Monday Goals/Objectives Students will become familiar with a problem that faces our community. Activities Students will become familiar with a real world problem that our community faces. Discussion around possible solutions will begin. Possible solutions to the real world problem will be explored through Science, Research, Math, Engineering and the Arts. Students will refine their research and work on an effective means to present their ideas.

Students will be able to see connections between the problem that we face and different content areas. Students will use the skills and knowledge that we have developed to propose their solution.

Thursday

Students will demonstrate a firm understanding of the problem and their solution by presenting their ideas in a mini-exhibition.

Students will invite families and community members to the school to see the work that we have accomplished and to share ideas.
