Calculation of the rate of reaction = ( Eg : =(

) cm3s-1

) cm3s-1

= 0.041 cm3s-1 Determining the order of the reaction: Rate expression of experiment without starch Rate = Calculation of the order of reaction for the reaction without starch = Calculation reaction order of CH3COCH3 by comparing the 1st Run and 3rd Run = 3.15 = 2m log 3.15 = log 2m log 3.15 = m log 2 m = 1.655 m 2 Calculation reaction order of H+ by comparing the 1st Run and 2nd Run

= 2.28 = 2n log 2.28 = log 2n log 2.28 = n log 2 n = 1.19 n 1

Calculation reaction order of I2 by comparing the 1st Run and 4th Run

= 0.976 = 2O log 0.976 = log 2O log 0.976 = o log 2 o = -0.035 o 0 Thus, the rate expression for the reaction without starch is Rate = Calculation of the order of reaction for the reaction with starch = Calculation reaction order of CH3COCH3 by comparing the 1st Run and 3rd Run = 0.321 = 2m log 0.321 = log 2m log 0.321 = m log 2 m = -1.64 m 2 Calculation reaction order of H+ by comparing the 1st Run and 2nd Run

= 0.643 = 2n log 0.643 = log 2n log 0.643 = n log 2 n = -0.637 n 1

Calculation reaction order of I2 by comparing the 1st Run and 4th Run

= 0.273 = 2O log 0.273 = log 2O log 0.273 = o log 2 o = -1.87 o 2 Thus, the rate expression for the reaction with starch is Rate = Determination the rate constant, k Determining the value of k for the without starch reaction Eg: 0.041= k= k = 3.2010-5 cm-6 s-1 1 Run k = 3.2010-5 cm-6 s-1 2 Run k = 2.8110-5 cm-6 s-1 3 Run k = 4.0610-5 cm-6 s-1 4 Run k = 3.2810-5 cm-6 s-1

Average rate constant = = 3.3410-5 cm-6 s-1 Determining the k for the with starch reaction Eg: 0.009= k= k = 4.3910-7 cm-6 s-1

1 Run 2 Run 3 Run 4 Run

k = 4.3910-7 cm-6 s-1 k = 1.3710-6 cm-6 s-1 k = 5.4710-6 cm-6 s-1 k = 6.4510-6 cm-6 s-1

Average rate constant = = 3.4310-6 cm-6 s-1 CONCLUSION AND EVALUATION From the data obtained through the experiment, the time taken for the iodine colour to disappear with the presence of starch is longer compared to the reaction without the starch. This indicated that the starch played it role in the reaction as the poison or the counter back catalyst which is the catalyst that decrease the rate of reaction. I also obtained the rate constant for the reaction without and with starch at 3.4310-6 cm-6 s-1 and 3.3410-5 cm-6 s-1 respectively. From the calculation of the rate constant from both reaction I could see huge difference between them due to the presence of starch. However, there are few errors that occurs during the experiment which slightly affect the actual reading obtain causing the data in this experiment to be less accurate. Table below is the errors that might happen and ways to improved them. Errors 1. Parallax error when taking the reading of burette Ways to improve The eyes should be perpendicular to the burette scale to get the most accurate reading Placed a piece of white paper at the behind of the scale so that the reading of burette will be easier and more accurate Conduct the experiment in closed laboratory so that the solution is in the room temperature condition at 27C thus constant the temperature of mixture. Repeat the experiment for at least 3 times and find the average value of the time taken needed for the iodine colour to disappear.

2. Heat from the surrounding were absorbed and increase the rate of reaction 3. Delay when pressing the START/STOP button thus get the less accurate time
