Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning:

Haas, Christina , and Linda Flower. "Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning." Writing about Writing: A College Reader. Comp. Elizabeth Wardle and Comp. Doug Downs. Boston: Bedford/St. Martin, 2010. 120-38. Print. Summary: The premise and purpose of this article is to express the need of rhetorical reading, and lacking thereof. The article argues that reading should be constructive rather than receptive, wherein readers should generate their own meaning that goes beyond the text rather than just create inferences based on whats written on the pages. Constructive reading can be achieved by means of rhetoric analysis, where a reader must construct a meaning based off of the context of a discourse situation; which includes whose writing the piece, the audience its intended for, the rhetorical context of the piece, and the history of the discourse. The article makes claims that a vast majority of students are taught to just concern themselves with the content or topic within a text so the meaning that can be extracted from it is limited; however, with a more rhetorical approach readers would be able to make interpretations of the text that goes beyond whats put in print. Within this article there is an experimental study thats main initiative was to pick out of the reading strategies used by readers of low and high academic levels. The three main reading strategies that are highlighted in the study are content, feature, and rhetoric strategies. While the bulk of the readers chose to go for the more contentoriented reading approach, there were a few that approached it more rhetorically. The rhetorical readers were able to pinpoint the implicit points of the article that was handed out to all, based off their tactic to emphasize the importance of factors such as the purpose and context of the article. Although inconclusive the study helped in forming a basis to the idea that a reader is more able to explore different ideas and build on their analytical skills Analysis:

By means of going over the study within the article I was able to identify with the college freshmen readers. I believe that for the most part I have a content approach when it comes to reading, whereas I highlight material, paraphrase, and jot down notes on the side with the intention of using them for a writing piece. I primarily do not think about the purpose the author has in writing the article, or to what audience is he or she trying to elicit

by means of skipping the conservative content approach and instead stepping towards that of rhetoric.
