Context: ESL Reading Course Class Level: Intermediate Focus: Reading Strategies (inferring meaning) Vocabulary: intermediate ction Grammar: -ed and -ing adjectives Teacher Materials: textbook / handouts, board, markers, graded reader Students: 12, college-age, varied L1 Student Objectives: increase vocabulary, practice reading strategies Student Materials: textbook / handouts, Sherlock Holmes graded reader (handouts are in boldface in the timeline below) Class Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

Class Timeline Time 5:00 Procedure Warm-Up: Don't say "yes" or "no." 1 S is "it." Other Ss ask Qs, S must answer without using "yes" or "no" -- using full sentences or tag answers. Do with 5 Ss, 1 minute each. Go over HW: Ss read their answers to Cloze 1 & 2 (-ed and -ing adjectives) Present grammar rule of thumb for -ed and -ing adjectives: -ed ADJ usu. describes a person: "I'm surprised to see you here!" -ing ADJ usu. describes the thing that causes a feeling: "They told us some surprising news." Ss write 4 sentences each using -ed and -ing adjectives, Problems with the forms then call on them to share with class. Schema activation for new extended reading topic: Lack of Sherlock Holmes. Ask WH-Qs (who, what, where, when, participation why, how) about Holmes, write answers on board. Pre-Reading Activity: vocabulary work. Ss do 1 and 2 on the HO individually and as a class; and 3 in pairs, then share with class. NB: "return ticket" British English for "round trip ticket." Vocabulary Matching: Ss fold HO along line, do top part Unable to infer meaning as a class. Ask Ss to share their inference strategies. Then they unfold the HO and do the matching task in pairs. Review as a class. Wrap-Up: Assign HW Questions on the The Speckled Band reading. Ss begin reading, may use dictionary.
