For doubled letters (ones with a shadda), I just wrote the letter twice. The is the French "j" (pronounced like the g in "mirage"), used
in some colloquial loan words. For fusHa words that are also used in 3ammiyya, I just put a '' in the "colloquial" column to indicate
that the word is the same in both. For verbs, I put first the third-person masculine past-tense conjugation, then after a dash the presenttense conjugation, then the verbal noun ( )in parentheses. Also, I tried to include the plurals for all the nouns I could, putting
first the singular and then the plural after a in parentheses.
I've tried to include both everyday vocabulary and more advanced vocabulary used frequently in the media. The media vocabulary
lists don't include an 3ammiyya column, since these words are generally the same in 3ammiyya, just pronounced a bit more
colloquially. I also didn't include an 3ammiyya column for the "technology" list, as people use English words so often in this context.

GREETINGS
I tried to include as many useful greetings and courteous expressions as I could on this page, focusing on the expressions used in
Egypt (so when I say "Colloquially people say such-and-such," I'm referring to Egypt). In some cases, I gave a standard variant and
then detailed the colloquial usage below. Also, I gave everything in the masculine form, just because it's easier than including the
feminine and plural forms for everything.
Do make sure to memorize the proper responses to each expression; it can be quite awkward if someone tells you something nice and
you don't know what to say back! If you don't know the right response, no one will crucify you or anything, but if you do know what
to say, it can make a really nice impression. Conveniently, usually the main verb in the response comes from the same root as the main
word used in the first expression -- for example, "ma3a s-salma," "salmtak," "Humdillh 3as-salma" and "sallimli 3a...," which all
have words from the s-l-m root. They all have the same response, "allh ysallimak," with another s-l-m root word. So if you keep that
in mind, it helps in remembering the right response.
Welcome; hello: ( ahlan wa sahlan)
Response: ( ahlan bk)
You can say when welcoming someone (ex. to your country or home). And you can also say it to mean just "hello."
Welcome; hello: ( marHaban)
Response: ( marHaban bk)
can be used in much the same way as
response is ( marHabtein - lit. two welcomes). is not really used in Egypt outside of tourist signs and so forth, but in
other places like the Gulf and Levant, it's used frequently to say hello.
Hello: ( as-salmu 3aleikum) - lit. Peace be upon you
Response: ( w3aleikum as-salm)
A common greeting used by Muslims. You can also add
blessings) to the end.
here too.
Sorry: ( sif)
Another way to say "Sorry" is ( mut'asif), which follows the same pattern of variants as .
Pardon me: ( la mo'axda)
Excuse me: or ( ba3d iznak or 3an iznak)
Used to express admiration:
Used to refer to events taking place in the future: ( in a' allh) - lit. if God wills
This is used a lot, anytime you talk about something taking place in the future. "See you tonight in a' allh." "I'll do it tomorrow in a'
allh." "Can you finish the report by Thursday?" "In a' allh." And so on.
Used when you see s.o. with a new haircut: ( na3man)
Response: ( allh yin3am 3aleik)
Bon appetit: ( bil-hana wi-ifa) - lit. with pleasure and health
Response: ( allh yihannk)
Said by a guest to the host at the end of a meal: or
Response: ( dmit Haytak)
( sallimli 3a...)
Response:
( allh ysallimak)
Good luck:
( see below).
Used for birthdays and all kinds of holidays: ( kulle sana winta Tayyib) - lit. May you (and your family) be well
every year.
Response: ( winta Tayyib)
This is the Egyptian variant of the standard ( kull 3m wa-antum bexeir).
Happy Ramadan: ( ramaDn karm)
Response: ( allhu akram)
This is the greeting used for Ramadan in Egypt, but

For all the job titles I didn't list a plural for, you can assume they are regular (add an suffix in fuSHa, an suffix in 3ammiyya).
EGYPTIAN COLOQUAL EXPRESSION
Here's some colloquial expressions used in Egyptian 3ammiyya (and only in 3ammiyya; I didn't list words that are also found in
fuSHa with the same meanings). I focused on interesting idioms, very commonly-used words and phrases, and words that can have
completely different meanings from the standard meaning. And I tried to list only expressions that I've actually heard used, ones that
are relatively frequent or at least interesting.

( | ya xabar abyaD/iswid)

is used in reaction to bad news.

To get past a marriageable age, become an old maid. Ex. "heyya baaret wa mi la'ya Hadde yetgawwezha" (She's gotten too old to get
married and can't find anyone to marry her." This is never said about men. You might say "howwa baar bi-walideih," but this would
mean that he takes care of his parents well. This expression comes from
organizations that take care of the eldery.
( mo3azzaz mokarram)
Content and well-taken-care-of. Usually used in the context of a son or daughter staying at home with their parents.
- ( ba'a - yib'a)
This can be a verb meaning "to become" or more generally "to be." But it can also be a particle used to follow up on a statement, like
"So..." or "Then..." Ex. "law 3aayiz tingaH, yeb2a laazim tizaakir" (if you want to succeed, [then] you have to study); "khalaSt waxadt lesans el-Hu'uu'...a3mel eih ba'a" (I finished and got my law degree...so [now] what do I do?).
( metkabbar 3ala)
Bigheaded. To say that someone is "metkabbar 3ala xal' allaah" (looks down on God's creations) or "metkabbar 3ala n-naas illi
Hawaleih" (looks down on the people around him) means that the person is really full of himself and thinks he's better than everyone
else.
( deilu fi sinaanu)
Lit. "his tail in his teeth." Based on the idea that in "baladi" areas where people wear traditional galabeyyas, if someone gets into a
fight or some trouble and ends up running away, he takes the "tail" of his galabeyya and puts it in his mouth so he doesn't trip over it
as he runs off. This expression is the equivalent of "with his tail between his legs"; it describes someone running ingloriously away
from a defeat. Ex. "hiribu deilhum fi sinaanhum" (They escaped with their tails between their legs).
( 3ala widnu)
Everywhere. Ex. "il-fasaad win-naSb ba'et 3ala widnu" (Corruption and swindling have [taken over] everywhere).
( omm il-kabaa'ir)
In Islam, it means the biggest sin you can commit. Colloquially, it's more loosely used to mean something like "the worst thing you
can do."
.( ya waa5od il-'ird 3ala maalu yiruuH il-maal wa yi'3od il-'ird 3ala Haalu)
If you marry a monkey (i.e. someone ugly) for his money, the money will go away and the monkey will stay the same (as ugly as
ever). (Don't marry for money.)
Being alone is better than being with someone bad. (Warning about keeping bad company.)
.( la''iini wallitaddini)
Better a warm welcome than being invited to lunch. (Welcoming people warmly is important.)
The imam farted, so those praying behind him shitted. (A leader's errors are compounded by his followers.) Note that this saying uses
crude language, so you should be careful who you say it around.

Similar to the above, used to desribe someone's similarity to one of their parents. Lit. "this cub (is) from that lion."
.( aHHaat we-nozahi.)
A beggar but acting like a rich man. (Used to describe someone who's in no position to be picky but is still acting like he can set the
terms of whatever bargain etc. is going on. Sort of like the equivalent of "Beggars can't be choosers," but in reverse.)
.( il-mo'men muSaab.)
The believer is afflicted. (The righteous always suffer.)
.( il-urbaal il-gediid luh adda.)
