international trade is vital for Moldovas economy, and can benefit human development by boosting productivity, employment and

economic growth. Sectors with a good potential for increased trade include agriculture and agro-processing, and information and communication technologies. The Moldovan economy is dependent on international trade, and Government budget revenues are strongly dependent on trade performance. Therefore, trade indirectly affects public financing for education, health, and environmental protection.

Traditionally, Moldova has maintained a trade surplus with the other Soviet republics and a trade deficit with the rest of the world. However, today, Moldova's only significant trade surplus is with Russia. Total imports almost double total exports. Wine tops the list of Moldova's export commodities (24%), followed by apparel (16%). Other exports include tobacco(6.5%), glassware (5.7%), and meat (5.4%).
Major Exportable items of the country are vegetables, manufactures, animal products and textiles. Exports partners of the country are Italy, Germany, Russia, and Romania. Important importable commodities of the country are Chemicals, textiles, fuels, and mineral products. It imports from the countries such as Germany, Russia, Italy and Ukraine.
