Unit Our new unit is Should I Stay or Should I Go? and looks at migration. The central idea is that human migration is a response to challenges, risks, and opportunities. The lines of inquiry include: the reasons why people migrate, effects of migration on communities, cultures, and individuals, and migration throughout history. If you would be willing to come in and share your own migration story with the students we would love to have you. Also, please talk to your child about their own personal experiences with migrating. We are sharing many migration stories through books and videos and asking the students to make connections and inferences based on their families migration experience. We are sharing our family trees and discussing interesting facts about our own migration stories. This week we will focus on the effects of migration. We were enthralled by Manassass story last week. He migrated from Angola to Namibia, back to Angola, and is now in Germany. We continue to explore theme in reading. The students are identifying some common themes. We are beginning to talk to the students about setting summer reading/writing goals and will be sharing our own plans with our students. Our writing is varied, ranging from informational to reflective. Students will also be selecting a favourite piece to publish in class anthologies. There is no word study for 3B or 3C this week because of the Monday holiday. This week we are working on 2D and 3D shapes and seeing how 2D shapes can be folded to make 3D shapes. We are also reviewing key concepts from the year including subtraction with regrouping, multidigit multiplication, patterning, and others as necessary.
