Unit Our new unit is Should I Stay or Should I Go? and looks at migration. The central idea is that human migration is a response to challenges, risks, and opportunities. The lines of inquiry include: the reasons why people migrate, effects of migration on communities, cultures, and individuals, and migration throughout history. If you would be willing to come in and share your own migration story with the students we would love to have you. Also, please talk to your child about their own personal experiences with migrating. We are sharing many migration stories through books and videos and asking the students to make connections and inferences based on their families migration experience. We are sharing our family trees and discussing interesting facts about our own migration stories. This week we will focus on the effects of migration. We were enthralled by Manassass story last week. He migrated from Angola to Namibia, back to Angola, and is now in Germany. We continue to explore theme in reading. The students are identifying some common themes. We are beginning to talk to the students about setting summer reading/writing goals and will be sharing our own plans with our students. Our writing is varied, ranging from informational to reflective. Students will also be selecting a favourite piece to publish in class anthologies. There is no word study for 3B or 3C this week because of the Monday holiday. This week we are working on 2D and 3D shapes and seeing how 2D shapes can be folded to make 3D shapes. We are also reviewing key concepts from the year including subtraction with regrouping, multidigit multiplication, patterning, and others as necessary.

Notes from Specialists Sports Day Elementary School Tuesday 19th June 8 am -3pm. Dear Parents, General information Like last year, we will be running a Sports Day for the Elementary School students on our own campus. It is a day of fun, action but also one of team work and collaboration. Above all it is a wonderful get together and one that provides the students with an opportunity to show what they have been doing in our subject and that Physical Education is for all. The Sports Day will start in the morning 08.15 am with an opening with all classes, from EC3/4 to grade 5. At 09.00 am the EC3/4 up to grade 1 will go indoors in the sports hall for their Day of Sport which will finish at 11 am (more detailed information will follow through Ben Dutton). Grade 2 till grade 5 will be outside for the whole day with breaks and lunch time included. All classes will meet outside at the end of the day for a final whole Elementary School tug of war before we will thank everybody and end the day. The students will be doing track and field events but also fun activities like spoon race and team games like football. This has been a fantastic event in recent years and both students and parents fully enjoyed it. We need your help come and join us in running the events!! To run a day like this we are looking for volunteers among our parent body. Each activity will have a PE teacher to run it so you would be assisting them. We are also looking at jobs like umpiring, score keeping, first aid (assisting our nurse). In general there are many small things to do and all the help is more than welcome, it is needed!. If you are keen to be involved in this wonderful day (or parts of!) please inform Joost Langendonck by email (joost.langendonck@bbis.de) . As said, PE staff will be in charge of an event but we need parents to help with measuring, keeping students in order, in general providing support. We need around 20 to 30 helpers so bring a friend! Thank you very much for your support and we hope to hear from you or see you on the day. Kind regards, Joost Langendonck On behalf of the PE department

Other The school library will be open on Wednesdays throughout the summer from 10-12, so that students can check out books, read together, or talk about books. Reading is the best way for your child to keep up in the summer. Each homeroom teacher will be sending home other ideas to try out in the summer as well. Used Book Sale will return at Summer Fest and we need your book donations. Please bring used books to room 1109 (next to the library) for any age reader in any language. Thanks! The Elementary Spring Concert will take place on June 7 at 1:00. Summer Fest is coming up quickly on June 9. We need parent volunteers to help run the booths, so talk to your classroom teacher for more information. Please volunteer for a half hour or hour time period between 11-3. Unit homework (family tree) was already due- not all have returned it yet.
