Definitions of Terminology
Fluids
In this catalog, the fluids sealed with gaskets are classified as follows. Depending on the type of gasket, however, there are various cases where one type of gasket cannot always be used in the same way for the same fluid. (1) Water type fluids Water, brine, hot water, steam, superheated steam. (2) Oil type fluids Crude oil, volatile oil, naphtha, kerosene, heavy oil, LPG, alcohol, furfural, ethylene glycol, ethylene, prophylene, B-B fraction, butadiene, liquid ammonia, phenol, acrylonitrile, acetone, acetoaldehyde, benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, cyclohexane, tetramethysulphon, tetraethyl lead, etc. (3) Corrosive fluids Acids such as mineral acids, organic acids, mixed acids, acidic solutions, etc., and alkalis. (4) Gas type fluids Air, nitrogen gas, combustible gas, combustion promoting gas, incombustible gas, toxic gas, etc. Places where there is little danger even with some leakage amount of air, nitrogen gas, etc., may also be considered safe like water type fluids; however, the necessary tightening pressure must be secured. (5) Low-temperature fluids LPG, liquid ethylene, LNG, liquid nitrogen, liquid air, etc.

Seating Stress The seating stress should be one the maximum value, as shown below: a. Wm1 according to JIS B 8273. b. Wm2 according to JIS B 8273. c. Minimum seating stress required for sealing liquids. For water, oil : 14.7N /E For gas : 34.3N /E Prevention of Gas Permeability The following are recommendations for gas seals: Apply a thin coat of gasket paste uniformly on the surface and inner diameter. Apply enough seating stress.(Please refer above.) Gaskets should be ring-shaped (FR shape) with a thickness of 1.5A or less. When an air tight test is required, 2-3 hours after tightening. Non-asbestos joint sheet shall not be used for toxic gas or high vacuum sealing. Joint Sheets for stainless steel flanges TOMBO No.1993, 1995 are recommended for this service since leachable halogens are little. Gasket paste is not required generally. However, if paste is used, please consult us. Compressive Stress Over compression leads to damage of gasket and causes failure. Maximum recommended compressive stress for joint sheets are as follows:
NA joint sheet Thickness A TOMBO No. Without paste N/E With paste N/E
Installation Tighten bolts from side to side around the joint in a star like crossing pattern. All bolts should be tightened in four to five increments, according proper bolting patterns. Immediate tightening can cause leaks and compression damage.

Gasket Thickness We recommend the use of gasket thickness as follows: Non-Asbestos Joint Sheet 1.5At Placing orders Sheets Please specify the thickness, width and length. Example: 1.5t12701270 or 1.5t1S. Cut gaskets In the case of flanges for JIS or JPI (ANSI) piping, etc., please specify pressure rating (class), nominal diameter, flange type (RF or FF) and gasket thickness. Example: JIS 10K50A, RF, 1.5t, JPI class 1502B, RF, 1.5t. Please provide a drawing for non-standard dimensions.
Caution
Notes: The NA joint sheets have low strength, so please exercise special caution to avoid uneven tightening. Do not use solvent-based gasket paste (hermetic SL-1, etc.) on NA joint sheets.
These joint sheet gaskets contain organic materials; therefore they are not recommended for combustion promoting application gas (oxygen gas). For further details, please refer to the separate handling instructions.

VORTEX GASKETS
Vortex gaskets are semi-metallic gaskets. Owing to their special construction, Vortex gaskets can be used at high temperatures and high pressures like metal gaskets. Sealability is outstanding and a wide application range is possible for various types of piping and equipment.
Construction
Vortex gaskets are made of thin V-shaped metal hoops and non-metallic cushioning filler. These are wound into a spiral shape by welding at the beginning and end of the spiral winding. Vortex gaskets are available in four types: basic, with an inner ring, with an outer ring, and with both inner and outer rings.

This Vortex gasket uses expanded graphite tape (GRASEAL tape) as the filler material which provides superb sealability even under severe conditions such as high temperatures, high pressures, cryogenic temperatures, heat cycles, temperature cycles and so on.
VORTEX GASKETS
Features
1. Sealability, especially gas sealing, is superior to that of asbestos Vortex gaskets. 2. Good sealability under high temperature and pressure since filler materials are less affected by high temperature. 3. Sealability remains outstanding even under severe conditions such as pressure fluctuations and heat cycles. 4. As filler materials is also chemical resistant, gasket with appropriately selected hoop can be used for corrosive fluids in situations where asbestos cannot be used. 5. Cautions
Storage
1. Store gaskets indoors in a cool, dark place in the original wrapping. 2. Do not stand gaskets upright or hang them. 3. Do not bend, twist, push or press gaskets.
Tightening
To obtain uniform seating stress, apply the tightening load (torque) in 4 - 5 stages, proceeding diagonally as shown in the diagram below. Gradually increase the strength of the tightening load until the prescribed seating stress is obtained. After that further tighten by proceeding clockwise 1 - 2 turns.
Installation
1. Before installing a gasket, first clean the surface of the flange and check the surface is free of foreign matters, scratches, etc. 2. Do not handle gaskets roughly. Since large diameter gasket is easily damaged (dropping off of windings), it should be handled very carefully by several persons. 3. Place gaskets carefully in correct position. 4. In principle, there is no need to apply gasket paste. But, if considered necessary NAFLON paste (TOMBO No. 9400) is recommended for temperature conditions of 300 or lower, 5. Do not re-use gaskets.

Notes: (1) Other types of gaskets with different cross section are also available upon request. (2) Indicates the heat resistance of the core. The values may become lower, depending on the jacket metal material.
Cautions (1) The use of expanded graphite tape (TOMBO No. 1220 or TOMBO No. 1221) on the sealing surface is recommended for more reliable sealing performance at temperatures of 400 and below. High-temperature gasket paste (Never Seize nickel special grade) is recommended at temperatures higher than 400. (2) Metal Jacket Gaskets are not recommended for standard pipe flanges because it is difficult to obtain enough seating stress. However, if used even so, gaskets with hangers are recommended for centering.

GRASEAL GASKETS
Expanded graphite (GRASEAL) is a material processed from pure natural graphite by chemical treatment and heat treatment at more than 1000. This material provides outstanding heat and chemical resistance, and is excellent for gaskets with high flexibility and low creep.
Features
1. Sealability remains almost same throughout a range of cryogenic to high temperature (400). 2. Excellent chemical resistance to almost all liquids other than strong oxidizing acids, etc. 3. Since cold flow and creep property are minor, it is not affected by over-tightening of gasket.
GRASEAL Gasket
TOMBO No.1200/1210/1215
GRASEAL gaskets are cut from GRASEAL sheets or GRASEAL sheets with metal reinforcement. There are four types in accordance with the application.
TOMBO No. 1200 GRASEAL Gasket Cut gasket from expanded graphite sheet (GRASEAL sheets) to be used for pipe flanges and valve bonnets, etc. This type is only recommended for small diameter gaskets due to its low mechanical strength. TOMBO No. 1210-A GRASEAL Gasket MI-A Type 316 stainless steel sheet (0.1 mm thick) with hooks is sandwiched with GRASEAL sheets and then cut into specific sizes. Mechanical strength is high. As hook height is low, less damege (such as scrathing etc) to flanges. TOMBO No. 1215 GRASEAL Gasket PM GRASEAL sheets are adhered to both sides of type 304 stainless steel sheet of 0.2 A thick. High in mechanical strength and easy to handle. As it can also be cut into complicated shapes, this type of gasket is widely used in various industries. TOMBO No. 1215-A Grsaseal gasket PM-A The stainless steel sheet use in TOMBO No. 1215 has been changed to SUS316 steel (50 micron). Applications For piping flanges, heat exchangers, valve bonnets, etc., in various industries and for special shape flanges for liquid level gauges. Applicable standards JPI-7S-79 Expanded Graphite Sheet Gaskets for Petroleum industry JIS F 7102 (TOMBO No. 1215 only) Standard size
Unit: A(values in brackets are actual thickness)
GRASEAL GASKETS
Cautions 1. Since TOMBO No.1200 gaskets are fragile, they are not recommended for narrow width gaskets or large-diameter gaskets. They are only recommended for nominal size of 4 inches or less. 2. The surfaces of GRASEAL Gaskets are easily damaged, which can result in leakage; therefore, handle with care. 3. Due to its nature, a very small amount of leakage is inevitable. When very high level of gas sealing is required, use TOMBO No.1215-T, 1215-AT which feature non-permeation treatment. (maximum service temp. 260) 4. In general, GRASEAL Gaskets cannot be used with the fluids listed in the table on page 43. 5. When handling TOMBO No.1210-A/ 1215/ 1215-A gaskets, pay attention not to scratch your fingers on the metal reinforcement.

TOMBO No.9010
The core of non-asbestos joint sheet, non-asbebestos paper etc., is covered with a thin film of PTFE. PTFE cut gaskets are subject to cold flow; therefore, they are not suitable for use with general pipe flanges. They also lack elasticity and are not always able to absorb unevenness on the flange surface completely. The combination of PTFE and cushioning core is able to absorb a certain amount of flange distortion. Improvements to cold flow have also been made. Less seating stress is required than with PTFE cut gaskets. The inside diameter and seal surface are completely covered with PTFE film; therefore, there is no contamination of fluids. Furthermore, chemical and corrosive solution resistance are excellent, and there is an electrical insulation effect. This gasket can be used for a wide range of applications in such fields as fine chemicals, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs and general industries.
Applications Various corrosive fluids, organic solvents. Fluids where contamination is not allowed. Where electrical insulation is required. Applicable standards JPI-7S-75
NAFLON GASKETS
This is a standard enveloped gasket produced by slitting a sheet of PTFE and inserting cushion material, as shown.
This is an enveloped gasket for large diameters (generally 1000 mm dia. or larger). Oval gaskets are also available. Since there is a heat seal in one place, sealability is slightly inferior to that of type A. The use of NAFLON paste (TOMBO No. 9400) is recommended. The same as type A but with a square inner section. There is little space inside the gasket, so there is less possibility of damage by the rapid expansion of air due to temperature rises. Appropriate design of the inside diameter reduces the accumulation of liquid and smoothes the flow in the fluid. The same as types A and AS but with the outer periphery sealed. Fluid from the exterior cannot penetrate or leak into the core. Because of this construction, even when used in vacuum lines, the covering strongly resists being pulled inside. Since there is no turning of the covering, setting is smooth even when the flange gap is narrow. The standard dimensions are JIS 10K, 15A - 600A. Please consult us concerning other dimensions. The maximum service temperature for these gaskets is 100.

Flange Finish The recommended surface roughness of metal flange is 6.3mRa. For Gas Sealing To seal gases, TOMBO No. 9400, NAFLON Paste shall be applied. For Installation Before setting the gasket, make sure that flange surface is free from foreign material or scratch. When setting the gasket, make sure to have enough distance between flanges. If gasket is forced to insert, it may cause leakage by damaging the gasket or peeling off of PTFE envelope. If enough distance between flanges are not available, "R" type is recommended. This type will prevent damage and peeling off of PTFE envelope during installation. For core type of 6 and 8, compression strength will be reduced when the gasket becomes wet. Gaskets shall be kept in water proof bags during storage. Special attention shall be paid so that gasket will not be wet by rain after installation. If gasket is not tighten propery, soap water of air tight test or rain water may permeate and nonasbestos paper may become soft. As a result, it may cause leakage by loosing gasket seating stress. Seating Stress Seating stress of gasket shall be controlled to maintain 29.4N/mm2 max. If gasket seating stress becomes more than this value, jointing sheet of the core may be destroyed. Uneven tightening also results excess seating stress partly and will cause for damage. Special attention shall be paid for bolt tightening. For Fluoropolymer lined piping, we set recommended tightening torque size by size. For details, please consult us.
Air tight test When air tight test is conducted after installation, bubble may be observed between PTFE envelope and core material. This air comes from inside of cushioning material and air between cusioning material and PTFE envelop. Especially for core type 6 and 8, these core material have such tendency. So, air tight test shall be conducted well after internal pressure is applied. Others Bolt tightening may be loosen in long time or after heat cycles. Bolt tightening shall be checked periodically and when bolt is loosen, re-tightening shall be done by initial bolt torque. When thermal stress or bending stress is repeatedly applied to the flanges, gasket seating stress is easilly reduced. This gasket is not recommended for such part. Cautions for selection of PTFE Cushion gasket Some of the fluids may permeate to inside of the gasket thru PTFE envelope. Especially nitric acid, ethylene chloride, halogens (chroline, bromine, etc.) molten sulfer, monochloroacetic acid etc., may attack the cushioning material by permeation in long time and as a result, gasket function will be lost. In such case, gasket shall be changed periodically or use PTFE cut gasket instead. When type "A", "B" and "AS" type is used for vacuum service, PTFE envelope may be pulled in. In such case, "R" type is recommended. Due to its shape of "A" type, fluid may remain in the space between flanges and gasket. To avoid this fluid remaining, "AS" type with appropriate gasket inner diameter shall be used. For plastic, glass and rubber lined pipings, each flanges have different gasket dimensions although flange standard is JIS standard. Please consult us for setting gasket dimensions if the gaskets are used for such pipings.

Saniclean Gasket
This is sanitary use rubber molded gaskets having PTFE film covering on the sealing surface of the gasket. Thanks to this unique structure, this gasket has advantages of rubber gasket and PTFE. Following types are available. For thread connector TOMBO No. 9014-A (Black color EPDM rubber) For ferrule TOMBO No. 9014-B (Black color EPDM rubber) TOMBO No. 9014-BW (White color EPDM rubber)
Features All the contact surface with fluid is covered with PTFE film. So, it is durable against hot water, alkalis, chlorine water etc. and lasts longer than rubber gaskets. As all the contact surface with fluid is PTFE, fluid is not adhered to surface and not permeate to inside. So contamination at flavor change is avoided. Sanitation process and time can be reduced at flavor change and increase productivity. Basically same application procedure as conventional rubber gasket but re-tightening process is required additionally. Note : Flavor change : Change of product at common use beverage manufacturing process such as bottling etc. Sanitation : Cleaning work. Washed with clean water, chlorine water, hot water, alkalis etc. Standard dimensions TOMBO No. 9014-A (For thread connector)

Notes: (1) This dimension chart is the same as ASME B16.20-2000 except 3-1/2 which is not listed in ASME B16.20-2000. It is also the same as JPI-7S-41-2005. (2) Applicable flanges are ASME B16.5 flanges and ASME B16.47 series B flanges. However, these can also be used for JPI-7S-15, JPI-7S-43 series B and API-Std-605 flanges. (3) Dimensions inside of the bold line are not suitable for slipon welded flanges. Use weld-neck flanges or socket-welded flanges. If slip-on flanges are used, gaskets as per dimension on page 73 are recommended. (4) For class 900 and above, please use weld-neck flanges.
(5) For bolting materials, high-tension bolts such as B7 (SNB-7) or above are required. (6) When used for slip-on flanges, please pay attention to the dimensions since the inner diameter of inner ring may be smaller than the flange inner diameter. To avoid this kind of problem, weldneck flanges are recommended. (7) As far as possible, please avoid using nominal size values in round brackets. (8) The gasket outer diameter for the types inner ring indicates the shoulder dimensions of the gasket excluding spring layers.
