Oh My Stomach Inquiry Lab Report

Sharlene Pennington Period.2

Procedures 1) Get all materials needed for the lab experiment. 2) Measure the tables when split in half. 3) Crush the alka seltzer with motor and pestle. 4) Fill graduated cylinder with 50 mL of H2O. 5) Fill balloon with crushed alka-seltzer. 6) Quickly put balloon over the opening of the flask. 7) Drop the crushed alka seltzer into the flask from the balloon. 8) Hold the balloon opening around the flask to secure it. 9) Use a string to measure the circumference of the blown up balloon. 10) Record your data and repeat this process with100 mL, and 150 mL of H2O. Background Knowledge The type of reaction that took place in the Oh My Stomach Lab is a double replacement reaction. The reaction took place when the Alka Seltzer was dropped from the balloon into the beaker filled with water. Some distinct properties of water would be that its a liquid and is capable of dissolving things. Some distinct properties of the Alka Seltzer would be that its capable of breaking it down, and it dissolved in the water. Hypothesis If more H2O is added inside the flask, then the balloon will be bigger because of the amount/space in the flask will be less. Designing the Investigation The control is the amount of alka seltzer , the erlinmyer flask, and the balloon. The variables would be the amount of water. The balloon size was the samesize throughout the lab, the shape of the erlin myer flask stayed the same, and the amount of alka seltzer was the same. The amount of water was different for every trial. For safety concerns, we used safety goggles and while the balloon was expanding, we stepped away just in case the balloon would blow up. Collecting and Presenting Data Trial # 1 2 3 (1 Tablet Crushed Alka Seltzer) 4.08 g 4.09 g 4.12 g Amount of H2O 50 mL 100 mL 150 mL Volume V=243/62 =233.4 L V=26.53/62=314.4 L V= 293/62=411.9 L

The pattern that is displayed in the data table above is that the mass of the alka seltzer remains constant but when you increase the amount of water in the erlin myer flask, the volume of the water with the dissolved alka seltzer increases.

Support The results we came out with relates to the initial question/problem statement because we predicted that if the amount of water increases inside the flask, the circumference of the balloon will be larger because the amount of space will be less in the flask.
