Teaching literacy skills in the first four years at school
It is always wonderful to hear from teachers and parents who are achieving outstanding results with Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar. They are often amazed at how well their children read, and especially of how well they can write. What distinguishes these teachers is the commitment they show to the teaching. They have used the programmes as their framework. They have taught at a pace, but kept each stage within the grasp of the children. They fully deserve the appreciation parents give them. As authors and publisher, we have always seen ourselves in partnership with teachers, providing both structure and flexibility, looking to teachers for creativity. Together this enables us all to deliver for the next generation. Christopher Jolly Managing Director

The 5 Basic Skills
Using a synthetic phonics approach, Jolly Phonics teaches children the five key skills for reading and writing.

b c g l

1. Learn the letter sounds

Children are taught the 42 main letter sounds. This includes alphabet sounds as well as digraphs such as sh, th, ai and ue.

Children are taught how to blend the sounds together to read and write new words.

3. Blending

LETTER SOUND ORDER

Jolly Phonics teaches the letter sounds in 7 groups of 6 sounds. The 42 sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). The first group has been chosen as it makes more simple three-letter words than any other 6 letters. This enables children to begin building words as early as possible.

4. Identifying the sounds in words

Listening for the sounds in words gives children the best start for improving spelling.

2. Learning letter formation

Using different multi-sensory methods, children learn how to form and write letters.

5. Tricky words
Tricky words have irregular spellings and children learn these separately.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Getting Started

b c g l

Teach
The Phonics Handbook is the place to start. Lesson guides are provided for teaching the 5 skills and all 42 letter sounds, with each letter sound introduced through a story and action. Suitable words are provided for dictation and blending activities, and photocopiable sheets enable the teacher to give each child activities to reinforce the lesson. The write-in Jolly Phonics Pupil Books can be given to each child in the class, to complete a range of daily exercises. The Teachers Book provides corresponding guidance and ideas for the teacher. Jolly Phonics for the Whiteboard enables teachers to deliver exciting lessons to the whole-class. It provides a series of interactive pages for each lesson, and covers the full years programme. Pretend to be a mouse. Wriggle fingers like whiskers and squeak i, i.

Teaching with Jolly Phonics begins with learning the 42 letter sounds.
As the programme progresses, the other 4 key skills are taught. Once children have learnt the letter sounds and some tricky words they can then begin to use the Jolly Phonics decodable readers and learn the alternative ways that vowels can be written.

Practise
Practise the letter sounds in an enjoyable way in class! The Jolly Jingles and Jolly Songs provide a different tune/song for each sound. The Jolly Phonics DVD supports teaching in an engaging way. Additional information on the principles of Jolly Phonics and pronunciation of the letter sounds is also included. The Finger Phonics Books come in 2 series: Big Books for the teacher to use with the whole-class and board books which children can use on their own. The Jolly Phonics Word Book and Jolly Phonics Cards can be used for further blending and dictation, while the Jolly Phonics Letter Sound Strips, which can be handed to each child, provide a useful reminder of the letter sounds and alternative spellings of the vowels. The Jolly Phonics Games CD provides over 20 interactive computer games that children can play to practise their phonic skills independently.

Revision Use flash cards to revise the digraphs introduced in Jolly Phonics Pupil Book 1: ai, oa, ie, ee, or, ng, oo, oo, ch, sh, th, th, qu, ou, oi, ue, er and ar. Use the flash cards, or the Tricky Word Wall Flowers, to revise the first set of tricky words. As each flash card is held up, the children should say the letter sound or read the tricky word. Letter Sound Revise the sh spelling of the /sh/ sound. With the children, make a list of words that use this spelling and write the words on the board. (See word bank on page 25.) Ask the children to make up sentences using some of the words in the list. The sh words could also be written onto a big fish shape, which can then be used as a word bank for display. Read the sentences one at a time for the children to write down. Remind the children that sentences start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. Point out the tricky words in the sentences.

Say the alphabet with the children. There should be a copy available that the children can see. Point to a letter and ask a child to say its sound and/or its name. Repeat with some of the other letters. The children need to know the order of the letters of the alphabet. They should practise reciting the alphabet as often as possible. There is an alphabet page at the back of the Pupil Books for the children to refer to. Main Point Revise the formation of the capital letters. Remind the children that they should always start at the top when forming the capital letters. The starting point for G, O, Q and S is slightly to the right, as if writing a letter C. Activity Page Using a coloured pencil, the children write inside the outline letters, starting at the starting dots and following the direction of the arrow. Then they have another go, writing inside the letters with a pencil of a different colour. Their lines will cross over each other inside the outline letters, but this does not matter. The children keep writing inside the letters using a different coloured pencil each time, until each letter is filled with its own rainbow. Extension Activity Jumble up some plastic or wooden alphabet letters, so that the children can put them into alphabetical order. The children could also complete any alphabet puzzles that are available. Rounding Off Give each child a different letter. If plastic or wooden letters are not available, the letters can be written on pieces of paper or card. The children take turns saying the sound and/or name of their letters.

The children turn to page 80 of their Pupil Books and colour the alphabet page.

What is Jolly Music?

Jolly Music is based on the tried and tested principles of Hungarian composer and music educator Zoltn Kodly. Using this philosophy, Cyrilla Rowsell and David Vinden, both experienced practitioners and teachers of the Kodly method, have developed the Jolly Music programme, a progressive and structured music curriculum. Child-centred approach that uses traditional rhymes and songs to teach key musical elements like pulse, rhythm, pitch, loudness and speed. Multi-sensory, with all the teaching done through singing, enabling children to become instant music-makers. Percussion instruments can also be incorporated. Packed with fun games and activities, allowing teachers to deliver an enjoyable lesson to their class. Step-by-step lesson plans as well as accompanying CDs for additional support. Each level provides a years programme of music lessons. Suitable for use for children aged between 4-10 years.
