MATH CARDS

Game Play and Rules:

1) Determine which type of game will be played and rules. (SEE TYPES OF GAMES) 2) The 1st player will flip over the top two (blue back) cards. Place the cards face up in the center of table to start game. Note: All other times, only one (blue back) card will be flipped over by any player. 3) Use math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and /or exponents) and make up a correct math problem and answer. Use all the (blue back) cards flipped over in the center of table to make up problems. a) Try to collect (blue back) cards as pairs only (two different cards per pair). Example: If a (blue back) 12 and 3 are in the center, Then you can either: * Add the cards 12 + 3 = 15 * Subtract the cards 12 - 3 = 9 * Multiply the cards 12 x 3 = 36 * Divide the cards 12 / 3 = 4 * Exponents 12 to the 3rd power = 1728 b) Select two (red back) number cards. Example: If the two (red back) cards you selected were numbered (5 and 7), any correct math problem from the (blue back) cards that ends with a 5 or 7 can be collected. * Since the (blue back) cards 12 + 3 = 15 and you have a (red back) card with the number 5, collect the (blue back) cards. * Place these collected (blue back) cards face down next to you. c) You can collect more than one pair of cards per turn (must use two different cards per pair). Example: The four (blue back) cards on the table are 3, 5, 8 and 1. Your (red back) cards are 5 and 7, then you can say 3 x 5 = 15 and 8 - 1 = 7. * Since the answers ends with a 5 or 7, collect both pairs. Notes: * You need at least two cards in the center to perform a math operation. * The answer must end with one of your (red back) card numbers to collect the (blue back) cards. * You must say the problem and answer correctly on the first attempt to collect the (blue back) cards. * Any division problem must divide evenly with no remainder. Game Play and Rules: (cont.)

4) Continue order of play from left to right. Remember: * Always flip only one card from the deck before performing operations. * You need at least two cards in the center to perform a math operation. 5) After the (blue back) deck has been completed, count your collected cards or points according only to the face card color. * The gold cards are worth 5 points each (# 4 cards) * The (multi-color wild) card is worth 5 points (# 1 card). * The green cards are worth 2 points each (# 12 cards). * The blue cards are worth 1 point each (# 28 cards). 6) Reshuffle both decks and select the (red back) cards again. 7) Rotate the start of play to the 2nd player, 3rd player, etc. 8) Continue playing and adding scores on paper until a person reaches 100 points or more to win the game.

Objective:
The first player to collect the most points with a score of 100 points or more wins the game. Use strategy and math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and/or exponents) to score points. This game is for 2 to 5 players (ages 4 and over).

Set Up:
Separate the (blue back) cards from the (red back) cards and shuffle each deck. The (red back) deck has 10 red cards numbered (0-9). * Spread the cards out face down and each player will randomly select 2 cards. * Place your selected (red back) cards face up on the table (showing the red numbers) in front of you. * Place any remaining (red back) cards aside face down (left over cards). The (blue back) deck has 45 gold, green, & blue cards numbered (0-12). Also there is one wild card that can be made into any number from (0-12). * Cut the deck for high card to determine order of play from right to left. * Place the card deck in the center of the players face down.

Advanced Game Play and Rules Options: 9) For multiplication and division only, up to three (blue back) cards can be used per operation. Two of these (blue back) cards may be combined. Combining is arranging two cards together in any combination, not adding the cards together. a) Multiplication - combine two (blue back) cards to form the 1st multiple. Use one different (blue back) card as the 2nd multiple. Example: The three (blue back) cards are 3, 5, and 9. Your (red back) cards are 5 and 7. You can combine the 5 and 9 to form 59. Thus, 59 x 3 = 177. Since 177 ends with a 7, collect the cards. b) Division - combine two (blue back) cards to form the dividend. Use one different (blue back) card for the divisor. One of your (red back) cards will be the quotient. The division problem must divide evenly and have no remainder. Example: The three (blue back) cards are 2, 4, and 6 Your (red back) cards are 5 and 7, then you can combine the 2 and 4 to form 42. Thus, 42 divided by 6 = 7. Since 7 ends with a 7, collect the cards.

Types of Games:
Players will agree upon which math operations will be used. * Choose any 2, 3, 4, or 5 of the following combinations: (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Exponents) Note: For a more challenging game; * Only chose either addition or subtraction along with any other math operations. Example: Choose (addition, division, and exponents). * You may perform exponents up to the 3rd power and beyond if agreed. Additional options: * You may play teams (okay to help team members if agreed). * You may use your Cipher Quick math board if agreed. * Use the 15 second timer for time limits per turn if agreed. Flip once for 15 sec, twice for 30 sec, and etc per turn.

Example of Play:
View example of game play on-line at: www.picturemath.com 1st player (red back) cards (0 and 4) 2nd player (red back) cards (1 and 9) 3rd player (red back) cards (3 and 5) 4th player (red back) cards (7 and 8) Notes: * The answer must end with one of your (red back) card numbers to collect the (blue back) cards. * You must say the problem and answer correctly on the first attempt to collect the (blue back) cards. (first rotation) 1st player's turn / the two (blue back) cards flipped are 5 and 1 / say 5 - 1 = 4 (collect / ends with 4) 2nd player's turn / flip (blue back) card is a 9 / no play available / card still on table (9) Note: you need at least two cards in the center to perform a math operation. 3rd player's turn / flip (blue back) card is a 3 / say 9 divide by 3 = 3 (collect/ ends with 3 ) 4th player's turn / flip (blue back) card is a 8 / no play available / cards still on table (8) (second rotation) 1st player's turn / flip (blue back) card is a 7 / no play available / cards still on table (8, 7) 2nd player's turn / flip (blue back) card is a 5 / no play available / cards still on table (8, 7, 5) Note: There was a play that was missed by the player. Could have said ( 8 -7 = 1) because they have a red 1. Next player's turn. 3rd player's turn / flip (blue back) card is the wild card. Decides to make the wild card an 11 / say 11-8 = 3 (collect / ends with 3). Then say 7 x 5 = 35 (collect / ends with 5). 4th player's turn / flip (blue back) card is a 7 / no play available / card still on table (7)

Example of play: (cont.)

(third rotation) 1st players turn / flip (blue back) card is a 6 / no play available / cards still on table (7, 6) 2nd players turn / flip (blue back) card is a 3 / combine 6 and 3 for 63 / say 63 divided by 7 = 9 (collect / ends with 9) Continue as directed until a player reaches 100 points or more to win game.

Tips for using the Cipher Quick Multiplication- Division Board

1) Multiplying- using the (blue back) cards in the center: * Find the 1st number along top row. * Find the second number in the 1st column on the left. * The intersection of this row and column is the answer. * To collect points, the answer must end with one of your (red back) cards. 2) Dividing- using the (blue back) cards in the center: * Find the divisor in the top row. * Extend down that column and locate the dividend. * From the dividend, move left along that row to the 1st column. * This number will be the quotient. * To collect points, the answer must end with one of your (red back) cards. Note: Place the board on table so players can use it if needed.

Tips for Preschoolers and Kindergarten Students

1) Using only the (blue back) cards, turn over two cards at a time. 2) Have the student add or subtract the two (blue back) cards. 3) If the problem is answered correctly, collect the cards. After student gains confidence: 1) You and the student(s) can each randomly select one of the (red back) cards. 2) Use math skills of addition and/ or subtraction make up a correct math operation. Follow the set up and game play rules and have a great game! Note: We recommend the Big Step (0-20) AdditionSubtraction Board. Find the answer by counting numbers, figures, and/ or using the number line. Write matching numbers in the box by the printed number.

Tips for using the Dice (furnished with math boards)

* Roll the 10 sided blue dice (0-9 and 00-90) to make up numbers to add or subtract. For use with Cipher Quick Addition / Subtraction Board. * Roll the 12 sided red dice (1-12) to make up numbers to add, subtract, multiply, or divide.
