W. Somerset Maugham Rain Short story 1921 A boat is temporarily stranded on the South Pacific island village of Pago Pago. Discharging among others, Alfred Davidson, his proper wife and Sadie Thompson, a prostitute. Sadie spends her time partying and drinking with the American soldiers stationed on the island. Her wild behavior soon becomes more than the Davidsons can stand and Mr. Davidson confronts Sadie, resolving to save her soul. However, when she rebels, Davidson has the governor order her deported to San Francisco, where she apparently committed a crime years earlier. She begs Davidson to allow her to remain on the island a few more days; her plan is to flee to Sydney instead. During a heated argument with Davidson, Sadie suddenly experiences a religious conversion and agrees to return to San Francisco. Later, Davidson succumbs to Sadie's beauty and accosts her. The next morning, he is found dead on the ocean shore a suicide. Now disillusioned with Davidson's teachings, Sadie switches back to her old self and goes off to Sydney with O'Hara to start a new life

Maughams Rain: analysis oft he main characters: Mr. Davidson: -Not a good man -Reaction=exaggerated he is a missionary (job=help) -He wants to be God, but God helps (doesnt help Sadie) -Control freak -Destroy himself or other people -Not a sociable person -Never forgives to the prostitute -= Rain, persistence, has a fury of its own -Show and support his beliefs (not as wife= quiet and keep to herself) Miss Thompson: -She is the catalyst for almost every action (before she arrives, rain begins to fall rain announces the next happenings of the story) -Music from the gramophone= mirror of Miss Thompsons mood -Different language, she is different from everybody -Clothes are particular cloths= feelings -Influences everybody: -Expression (ingratiating smile) -Persuasive character (she has to pay only one dollar) -Effrontery (Frechheit) -Provocative behavior -Changes Davidsons life: changes cmplt his behavior, badly off, death connection with Thompson -Changes Macphails stay: tries to do a lot for her favor -Changes Mrs. Davidsons stay: she is always with him (husbands ill behavior -Always in the spotlight -Reason of bad atmosphere The Macphails: medical missionaries, kind and understanding people, Mr. felt mercy for Thompson and though that Davidsons treatment was inhumane

Marriage customs: NV: Before they were polygamous, then polygamy was forbidden CV: Marriage= fidelity not polygamy 4.Sense of sin NV: Before arrival: no sense of sin, after they must pay when they does faults, expel from their church, not allowed to sell copra END: Mr. Horn wears a lava lava= victory of natives values
