Restate the poem in your own words. When I request, and/or when it is helpful to you, explicate the poem line by line. Do not attempt to paraphrase until you have read the poem at least twice (preferably aloud). WHO IS THE SPEAKER? WHAT IS THE SITUATION?
Connotations
Identify that which enriches the poem. Consider form, rhyme scheme, figurative language, symbolism, diction, punctuation, imagery, repetition, etc.
Attitude Shift
Identify changes, or twists, within the poem. These shifts may include tone, syntax, etc.
Title Theme
Consider the title again. Has the meaning changed? If so, why?
What is the central message of the poem? State the theme in a complete sentence.
