Introduction

My friends, most of us have experience pain when we could not help a person we love. Jesus knew that
same pain when his good news was rejected by his own community, his neighbors, and friends. As we
pray today, let us commend to God those people we love, remembering that God loves them even more.

Weekly Stewardship Thought

It is only the hand that is open to give that is open to receive. God cannot give us what we refuse to take
and God cannot give to us when our hands and hearts cling to things.

Reflection Question
Do I realize that I am called to be a prophet, like
Ezekiel, Paul and Jesus? What am I doing to
deepen my life with Christ in order to fulfill this
mission, given to me at Baptism? How do I deal
with my own weakness? Can I echo the words of
Paul that “when I am weak, then I am strong”?

Lunchtime Mass at St. Theresa’s Suspended

The 12:10 p.m. daily Mass at St. Theresa’s Cathedral will resume in September.
Welcome!
This weekend we are happy to welcome little Elyse Kay DeCouto, daughter of Kevin and Ashlee, in the
Sacrament of Baptism. Please remember Elyse, her parents and godparents in your prayers.

CCD Fees are Now Past Due!

Parents, please submit your payment of $135 per child (cheques payable to ‘St. Patrick’s Church’) and
forms to Mrs. Maria Pacheco or drop off at the Rectory as soon as possible. Alternatively, forms and
payment may be delivered directly to Mrs. Essie Hans at the Diocesan Centre on Laffan Street.

One Catechist Needed for September

St. Patrick’s Parish is truly grateful to the current CCD catechists who have volunteered their time and
talent to teach our young people for the upcoming school year, September 2012 – June 2013. However,
we are still in need of a Catechist – for Grade 6 - and Aides for the start of CCD in September.

This rewarding ministry is both challenging and fulfilling. You can expect to spend about three hours a
week in preparation and class time. Catholic men and women need to step forward to teach our faith to
the young people of our parish. Please speak to Mrs. Maria Pacheco (CCD Coordinator) or call the
Rectory at 236-9866 if you are interested in helping.

Rev. Jerry Kroetsch, C.R.

Please continue to remember Fr. Jerry in your prayers as he struggles with Lou Gehrig’s disease. This is
also the year of his 50th Anniversary of Ordination to Priesthood, which he will celebrate with four other
priests on August 17 in Waterloo. Fr. Jerry’s address is:
Resurrection Manor,
265 Westmount Road, North,
Waterloo ON Canada N2L 3G7,
E-mail: jkroetsch@resurrectioncollege.ca

He would love to hear from his former parishioners during this difficult period in his life.

Peter’s Pence Collection ‘Thank You’

Thank you for your generous support of the essential work of the Holy Father and his charitable acts
through the Peter’s Pence Collection. Our contributions will be combined with those of our brothers and
sisters around the world to help Pope Benedict reach out to those in need. Your generosity will help to
cast Christ’s peace upon the world.

St. Vincent de Paul Society -- Calling All Men!

As most people are aware, the Loaves & Fishes Project sponsored by the St. Vincent de Paul Society has
been an amazing success for the SVDP Society, but more importantly for members of the Roman
Catholic Diocese and the greater Community here in Bermuda and the guests we serve. The St. Vincent
de Paul feed an average of 70 – 80 needy people each Sunday from 5:30-6:60pm. The guests are all ages,
races, ethnicities and genders – children and adults.

The St. Vincent de Paul are grateful to everyone who is already a part of this programme. However, they
need ADULT MALE VOLUNTEERS. They would be very pleased if a “Few Good Men” would examine
their hearts from within and consider donating their time. There are 8 teams scheduled over an 8-week
period. As each team consists predominantly of women, St. Vincent de Paul would like to add some men
to each team. Every person would have a turn once every 8 weeks. If interested, please contact Joanne
Judd at 295-3354 or judd@northrock.bm to discuss further.

Prayers for the Sick

If you would like to include the name of a loved one for immediate special prayer, please contact the
office at 236-9866 and renew your request by the first week of each additional month.

Alcoholic Anonymous Meetings

St. Patrick’s Parish is the site of Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) meetings every Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Rectory basement. Meetings are offered in both English and
Portuguese and are open to anyone wanting to stop by.

Catholic Questions and Answers

Question #1
Sometimes my wife and I drop our 13-month-old son off at my mom's house while we go to Mass. It just
occurred to me that since my son is baptized, he has an obligation to attend Sunday Mass. What is my
obligation to see that he attends Mass?

Answer (by Fr. Vincent Serpa, OP)

Children under the age of reason are not obliged to attend Sunday Mass. However, they should be
familiar with attending Mass by the time they are seven years of age (the accepted age of reason). They
ought to be attending Sunday Mass regularly by the time they start school.

Question #2
Who ran the Catholic Church after John Paul II died and before Benedict XVI was elected?

Answer
During an interregnum (Latin: "between reigns"), the day-to-day business of the Church is administered
by the cardinal camerlengo (chamberlain). The camerlengo during the interregnum of 2005 was Eduardo
Cardinal Martinez Somalo. The camerlengo does not make any decisions that are not of immediate
necessity to the administration of the Church. Any decision that is not urgent to the running of the Church
is postponed until a new pope is elected.

Question #3
Can a non-Catholic Christian groom receive Communion at his Catholic wedding?

Answer
No, the non-Catholic may not receive Communion at a Catholic wedding. Actually, not all Catholics may
receive Communion. Only those who are in a state of grace can receive the Eucharist. To receive
Communion in the Catholic Church is a sign of complete acceptance of Catholic teaching. It is also a sign
of complete unity among believers. Unfortunately, Catholic and non-Catholic Christians still do not share
such unity. At present, the mutual reception of Communion by Catholics and non-Catholics would not be
an honest sign. Because of the inability of non-Catholic Christians to receive Communion, Catholics who
are marrying a non-Catholic are usually encouraged not to have a Mass as part of their nuptial liturgy.

Smile for the Day! Unbelievable!

Jerry Williams, of Little Rock, Arkansas, was awarded $14,500 plus medical expenses in 2011 after being
bitten on the butt by his next door neighbor’s beagle – even though the beagle was on a chain in its
owner’s fenced yard. Williams did not get as much as he asked for because the jury believed the beagle
might have been provoked at the time of the butt bite because Williams had climbed over the fence into
the yard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun.
