Communities issue burning bans in response to drought

By Thomas J. McKillen Managing Editor Several communities in southern Wisconsin have issued burning bans or restrictions on watering lawns in response to an ongoing drought. Gov. Scott Walker declared a state of emergency in 42 counties in southern Wisconsin due to drought conditions. The declaration will allow expedited permits for farmers to temporarily use stream or lake water for irrigation. "The lack of rainfall since May in the southern half of the state has hit hard in a crucial part of the growing season," Walker said. "Wisconsin Agricultural Statistics Service reports this week that most of the land in these counties is short or very short of soil moisture, and this week's U.S. Drought Monitor for the first time reported the southern tiers of Wisconsin counties to be in drought. The Menomonee Falls Fire Department issued a burning ban June 14. The ban includes any type of brush burning, recreational fires, or wood burning of any kind. Because of extremely dry conditions the potential for spontaneous fires to ignite from flying sparks and embers exists. Charcoal and gas grills are permitted, the village of Menomonee Falls stated on its website. The village of Germantown issued a lawn watering ban last week while the village of Sussex requested that residents limit watering their lawns. Due to the extreme demand placed on the Village of Germantown Water System from lawn watering, the

Goodwill Donation Center Opens in Germantown

Giving away those unwanted, but still usable items has been made easy now that a Goodwill Donation Center has opened at N112 W15800 Mequon Road in Germantown. With no store attached, the donation center-only design is a new concept and the first of its kind locally. The facilitywhich opened March 2takes a variety of items from the public with no hassle. We accept your gently used clothing and small household items with a smile and gratitude, said donation coordinator Rochelle Thames. The center is meant to be an easy-in, easy-out, convenient location enabling you to drop off your donations fast and efficiently. The center features five-minute donor parking spaces out front and store attendants bring a tote on wheels to unload the donations from vehicles. The items are then shipped to region Goodwill stores in need of product and the donations are resold. The money from these sales go back into the community by providing training, employment, and supportive services for people with disabilities or disadvantages who seek greater independence, said Thames. Thameswho has worked for Goodwill for eight years and taken advantage of the companys educationfurthering opportunitiessings high praises of the organization. It is very fulfilling to know that I am helping so many people with every donation I accept and every sale I ring up, she said. Thames, who lives in West Bend with her husband and two teenagers, works for Goodwill in Germantown, Menomonee Falls, and West Bend full-time and attends Moraine Park Technical College part-time. She graduated from Goodwills Career Path program in 2010 to become an assistant store manager and will earn an Associate Degree in Leadership Development in the spring of 2013. Goodwill encourages their employees to pursue more education and they promote within when possible, providing their Career Path program to help employees prepare for the next internal level, she said. Goodwill also provides excellent customer service and quality items for fair prices and helps America become more green by keeping items out of landfills, she noted. Goodwill is truly an amazing company and I am very proud to say I work for Goodwill, Thames said. The staff also includes team leaders Greg Tomkiewicz and Sherie Prince and donation attendants Adam Forrester and Austin Klein. The Germantown donation center is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. This location can be reached at (414) 235-3398 (phone) or (414) 377-8196 (fax). About Goodwill...The local Goodwill was founded in 1919 and the national movement began in Boston in 1902 by Methodist minister, Rev. Edgar J. Helms. In addition to being one of the largest employers of persons with disabilities, the revenue raised by Goodwills various divisions go back into supporting programs. In 2011, Goodwill provided services to almost 50,000 individuals. The local organization is the largest Goodwill among 165 agencies in North America.

Give stressed summer plants a helping hand

BY MELINDA MYERS Dont let summer stressors ruin your landscapes good looks. Instead give your plants natural defenses a boost and keep both vegetable gardens producing and flowers blooming. Busy summer schedules can lead to plant neglect and less-than-picture-perfect gardens. When you team this with summer heat and drought that can lead to wilting, brown leaves, and poor growth, and add insects and diseases that can further weaken and damage plants, gardens can really suffer. An exciting new organic tool for gardeners is now available to help. Plant strengtheners, like JAZ sprays , help boost plants natural defenses so they are better able to deal with environmental stress, neglect, as well as insects and disease attacks.

Scientists found that when plants experienced stress from drought, temperature extremes, insects or diseases they produced certain molecules that activated their natural defenses. They isolated these molecules, applied them to other plants, and found that the treated plants were better able to tolerate stress. Plant strengtheners contain such molecules that increase natural defenses in plants. One such family of molecules is the jasmonates, originally identified in the jasmine plant, that increases hundreds of natural defense molecules in treated plants. Some of the natural defenses make the plants more resistant to pathogens and others help reduce damage from drought, heat and salt. While proper care can help increase a plants natural defenses, plant strengtheners give them an extra boost to help plants thrive even during periods of environmental stress. These organic products act like vitamins or immunizations, helping plants deal with extreme and often unpredictable weather, pest, and disease challenges. You can even keep healthy plants performing their best by proactively using a plant strengthener. By doing so, youll boost a plants immune system before environmental stresses hit and ultimately help it thrive as it faces serious challenges throughout the remainder of the season. Its a great way to protect plants before they become threatened. Make sure to give your plants proper care throughout their lifetime. Water thoroughly and as needed. Then mulch the soil surrounding your plants with shredded leaves, evergreen needles, or other organic materials. These conserve moisture, keep roots cool and moist, suppress weeds, and

Commission supports parking adjustment at Crossroads Shopping Center

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Menomonee Falls Plan Commission expressed support for a parking adjustment as part of a revamping of Pick 'N Save in the Crossroads Shopping Center on the southwest corner of County Line Road and Appleton Avenue. Village Director of Community Development Matt Carran said that R-K Associates of Waukesha Limited Partnership explained that Pick 'N Save is on the far east section of the shopping center. R-K Associates is working on an addition that would move the grocery store to just west of the current grocery store while changing the parking lot layout so that islands would be added and parking stalls would be perpendicular instead of vertiAccording to Carran, the expansion of the shopping center would require a total of 839 shopping stalls while 527 stalls are included in the plan. Village ordinance does allow for a parking adjustment. Carran read a letter from R-K Associates indicating that not all of the current stalls are filled during peak times of the year. The changes would leave the existing Pick 'N Save space vacant. Jim Voelz, president and owner of the Redmond Company, said their goal would be to find one tenant for that space and added his firm would seek to be "sensitive" to Pick 'N Save in seeking future tenants for the vacated space. He later noted that the grocery store has been part of the shopping center for 23 years. Trustee Michael McDonald expressed concern about the potential of vacant cal. space in the shopping center and the total impact of the move on the shopping center. He also expressed questioned if there would be enough parking spaces. "This location is very attractive from a retail perspective. We certainly have a fair amount of interest from other tenants," Voelz said. When asked later in the week about current tenants who may displaced by the new Pick N Save site, Voelz said that some of the tenants in the area the new Pick N Save is going in are being moved to vacated tenant space between the new Pick N Save and the JC Penneys. He added that the space that would be vacated by Pick N Save is currently being marketed to potential tenants. In a subsequent email response, he indicated that timing for the project was still being worked out between various parties.

...Water restrictions in other communities

From page 1
Department of Public Works is declaring a lawn watering ban effective immediately until further notice, Germantown Public Works Director Dan Ludwig said in a statement issued July 9. Ludwig said the village is asking all customers to discontinue watering their lawns and requested residents on private wells to voluntarily restrict lawn watering to conserve aquifer resources. He added the watering ban does not apply to tree and garden watering or washing automobiles. In a statement issued July 12, Sussex Assistant Village Administrator Melissa Weiss said the village is requesting that residents follow an every other day watering program, with residents whose addresses end on an odd number water their lawns on odd-numbered days and residents whose addresses end on an even number water lawns on an even numbered day. Of course if you dont need to water your lawn the Village encourages you to let it go dormant during this dry season, Weiss stated. There is not a restriction against watering flowers or while first establishing lawns as those often require more frequent water. If you do feel like you need to water the Village asks that it be done for a short duration and during the later evening or early morning hours, avoiding the weekends if possible as those are the highest water usage days. Weiss added that the village is not in danger of an insufficient water supply and is not issuing a ban on lawn watering at this point, but voluntary restrictions by residents should help the village from having to issue a lawn watering restriction. The village of Sussex issued a burning ban June 28. Campfires, fireworks and all forms of outside burning are prohibited until the fire department lifts the ban, the village said in a statement.

Dear Dr. Winter, my teeth are not in good shape. I have soft enamel that decays easily. Previous dental work is deteriorating, there is an odor coming from a back molar. I no longer want to continue to deal with never ending cavities and bad taste. I am interested in implant fixed dentures (probably mini implants due to cost). Dear Jan, before you write off your remaining teeth, it is important to realize that strategic saving of teeth can help protect implants as teeth have ligaments which act as shock absorbers that implants lack. Many people feel that it is easier to extract all teeth and have implants and for some people that is the best course of action. However, if there are nice teeth that are healthy, it is not always prudent to remove them just to place implants as there are always risks, Drs. improve the soil as they break down. And, if your plants experience the same problems each year, it is time to make a change. Move stressed plants to more suitable growing conditions. Match the plant to the light, soil, and moisture it prefers. Replace diseased plants with resistant varieties and provide proper care. By taking these steps and investing a bit of time and energy youll be sure to create a beautiful, healthy and productive landscape. Commission proceeds with public hearing regarding gas station request

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Menomonee Falls Plan Commission will hold a public hearing regarding a request from a local gas station to sell beer up to midnight. The item was discussed during the July 10 commission meeting. The request came from the Menomonee Falls BP, located at N86 W16317 Appleton Ave. According to information from village staff, the conditional use permit for the business limits the hours of operation from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The applicant, Amandeep Tran, is requesting to keep the business open until midnight and be able to sell beer up to closing time. A petition in support of the request was signed by 34 residents. At the start of discussion, Village Director of Community Development Matt Carran noted that the sale of beer used to be restricted by state law to end at 9 p.m. but it was recently changed to midnight. "Is this something we want to do in the community in general rather than to hear (requests one at a time)?" Village President Randy Newman asked. Newman indicated that the Village Board would ask why it should support the change and he also expressed concern that the business might be the only one in the village selling beer until midnight. "That is not an attraction to me," Newman said. Carran suggested the village should seek public input on the proposal and not waive the public hearing for the request. The public hearing will be held before the commission Aug. 7. On a separate matter related to the business, commission member Chris Rolenc noted that the business is not complying with village ordinances which according to the villages staff report prohibits outside storage, had seven temporary signs without a permit and had landscaping that was unkempt. "I do not see why we should keep letting places like this do things they want to do if they're just not going to care about maintaining their property and keeping it looking attractive," Rolenc said. "That's not acceptable in my opinion." Newman added that if a business comes before the commission and is not complying with conditions, "you're going to have a hard time getting a yes vote from me." In another matter, the board got a look a conceptual proposal for a duplex on a .65 acre parcel at the southeast corner of Lannon and County Line roads. Trustee Michael McDonald that if the request was approved, it would have to rely on a mound-type septic sewer operation on the property as the village's municipal sewer service does not reach that area. Carran noted that if Jeffrey J. Martin, who requested discussion of the concept, went ahead with his plans, he would need to rezone the property from the R-3 residential to a multifamily residential district or a planned residential development district. Martin indicated he brought the concept to the commission to see what it initially thought of it before pursuing it any further.

Falls Fest returns July 26-29

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The favorites return to Falls Fest this year, along with a few new musical acts and specials. The event will be held at Village Park and Garfield Drive July 26-29. The festival will be open from 5 p.m. to midnight July 26 and 27 and noon to midnight July 28 and 29. This will be the 20th anniversary of the festival, which originally was an offshoot of the villages centennial celebration. Planning for the festival begins as the previous festival ends and is overseen by an 18-member board Among the new items this year will be two shows by the North Coast Orchestra, which is making its first appearance at the festival. Falls Fest organizer Jeff Steliga explained that the nine-piece horn band is led by the former lead vocalist for Brew City Horns. Steliga noted that while North Coast typically focuses on corporate or private events, they are stretching their wings by performing at some festivals. Steliga added that members of North Coast have been in other area bands. Hat Trick will also be making its first appearance at the festival. Also new this year is the Dollar Off Daytime in which beer and soda will be sold for $1 from noon to 5 p.m. July 28 and 29. With the economy being as poor as it is, we thought wed try to do something to make it a little less for people to come to enjoy the music and the food and beverages, Steliga said. While the festival cant control food prices for events, it was able to change its beverage prices to make the day more affordable, he noted. Other additions are a few food vendors: Lumpyicous BBQ and A.J. OBradys. While the Optimist Club of Menomonee Falls returns with its popcorn stand, they will also have a food stand where they will offer items such as deep fried cheese curds and other items. They join returning vendors Papa Murphys Pizza, Trysting Place, Bugline Sports Bar and Grill, Cousins Subs and the Falls Fest Beer and Tents garden. Dave & Busters will have a street patrol at the festival, which will include games and raffles for adults, on July 27-28. Chasin Mason returns with a show that begins at 7:45 p.m. July 28. While the band has performed at the festival in the past, Steliga noted that a new wrinkle is that Chasin Mason is touring with Erica Hoyt, who will provide the female lead vocal on some songs. Steliga noted that while Chasin Mason has performed at Falls Fest in the past, the band is now trying to expand its reach to other parts of the midwest. Were very, very glad to still have them, Steliga said. The new twists include a solid set of entertainers that have become part of the festival. The Mr. Lucky Swing Syndicate will perform at noon July 29 while there will be performances by Accompany of Kids (at noon July 28) and Main Street Song & Dance Troupe (2:30 p.m. July 28 and 2 p.m. July 29). The Eddie Butts Band will kick off the festival with a show starting at 7 p.m. July 29. It will be the 15th year at Falls Fest for the Eddie Butts Band. We have a lot of returning acts because they draw well and people appreciate them, Steliga said. Steliga also explained how the Eddie Butts Band was a part of the change in the festival in 1998. Following a year in which

Chasin Mason, which features Billy ODwyer (above) on lead vocals, will perform at Falls Fest July 28. Express News file photo.
warm weather negatively affected attendance, festival organizers decided to pull out all the stops and sought big name entertainment for the 1998 festival. Scheduling the Eddie Butts Band on a Thursday was intended to draw people to the festival the first night and keep them coming back the other days of the festival. We doubled our sales in one year, Steliga said of the changes that started at the 1998 festival. Proceeds from the festival have gone toward donations for various activities. In past years Falls Fest has made donations to the Menomonee Falls High School football, cheer and dance teams. The organization made donations toward the police motorcycle and canine programs, and made a contribution toward the purchase of a taser for the police department. In addition, the organization made a donation to purchase lights for the Menomonee Falls High School soccer field and donated toward the Menomonee Falls Little League, which has one of its field named for the club. Partial schedule The following is a schedule of Main Stage Entertainment July 26: Dusk, 5 p.m., The Eddie Butts Band, 7 p.m. July 27: Heat Duo, 5 p.m.; The Sweet Tarts, 7:45 p.m. July 28: Accompany of Kids, noon; Main Street Song & Dance Troupe; 2:30 p.m.; Hat Trick, 3:30 p.m.; Chasin Mason 7:45 p.m. July 29: Mr. Lucky Swing Syndicate, noon; Main Street Song & Dance, 2 p.m., North Coast Orchestra, 5 p.m.; Fireworks, 9:45 p.m.; North Coast Orchestra, 10 p.m. Additional performances will occur at the Family Entertainment Stage. Other activities: Angelos Open Mic Night from 5 to 11 p.m.; Mini-golf, giant slide and childrens games in the tennis court area; A silent auction; The Police vs. Fire Department softball game at 6:45 p.m. July 26 and a softball tournament during the remainder of the festival. Sponsors for the festival are Blairs True Value, Malkins Carpets, McDonalds, BMO Harris, Miller Lite and Minors Garden Center. For more information and updates, go to www.falls-fest.com.
