MedPharm Careers organises medical job fairs in 23 European countries. Last spring, MedPharm Careers successfully completed their 11th international job fairs event dedicated to medical, nursing and pharmaceutical specialists.

Medicine and healthcare will probably become more available for each individual. Also demographic processes like population growth and the increase of life expectancy will significantly boost the demand for healthcare services. As a doctor who has experienced working in different locations, I can truly confirm that globalisation has influenced healthcare systems in many ways and is dynamically changing the healthcare market. Nowadays, with medical or nursing qualifications, you can work almost anywhere. That creates unlimited potential for career development. I organised my first event in 2007 in the heart of Poland Warsaw. Since then, we have experienced a constantly growing interest in our job fair events which focused on the career development of doctors, nurses and other professions in the healthcare market. For all these reasons, we decided to expand across Europe.

rzegorz Chodkowski is a doctor himself with almost 9 years of experience and, as it turns out, a great businessmen and organiser. He found the time to answer some of our questions, describe his achievements, and talk about future opportunities for healthcare professionals.
Dr Chodkowski, why did you decide to expand MedPharm Careers across Europe? What is changing in the global healthcare market?
First of all, we want to be a professional centre for career development in healthcare. Our market knowledge and experience is unique and valued by doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals all over the world. We understand that people change jobs for many reasons. Professionals are looking for career progression, new challenges and interesting paths where they can do what they like. We want to help people find rewarding careers in the healthcare market by giving them valuable advice and insight. Ultimately, the goal is to match professionals with employers in the most beneficial way for both parties. As a matter of fact, it isnt so difficult. Physicians, surgeons and nurses always have several offers and can choose the most appropriate one and the level of new job satisfaction always remains high.

I was always thinking about creating a company that can help hospitals find the most talented doctors, nurses and other specialists if they are willing to make changes in their career path, including moving countries. Last springs edition gathered thousands of professionals in almost 50 locations around Europe. Even before the first events started, we experienced enormous interest, sometimes we had to organise new events tailored to specific needs of professionals and employers. Yes, in general the trend is rising. We have observed large interest from professionals in the old EU member states. Doctors and nurses from Portugal, Greece and Spain especially in the current economic climate are looking for specific vacancies, new challenges, and attractive locations. Salaries are still high on their list of considerations but these other factors are also very important.
Job fairs are a chance to meet a lot of people. It must be a lot of work managing so many contacts.
Well, sometimes its hard - but Im still eager to make more connections. I know professionals, managers, CEOs and marketers from all over the world. I cannot forget that our success depends on people! That is why I am always very open to meet new specialists who want to make changes to their careers or add something new. I try to answer every question.
What are your plans for the future?
We want to continue to build on a solid foundation and on up-to-date data collection features that work for jobseekers and employers around the world. Our offer will be complex and attractive for professionals all over the world and will attract even more professionals. Many professionals could not come to our events because of distance barriers but I hope that soon we will meet each other on our new online portal, www.medpharmjobs.com, and of course at any of our job fair events this autumn. The new online portal will be the perfect place to find job offers from around the world and to get up-to-date news, interesting and in-depth articles, reports and analyses.

In any line of work the step between completing your studies and entering full time professional employment can be extremely daunting. Even more so if your chosen profession is medicine. To go from practicing on hypothetical patients in an educational setting to working in real hospitals with real patients and real consequences can seem like an overwhelming development.
Launched in 2005, The UK Foundation Programme is a two year training course for newly qualified doctors which aims to provide a link between medical school and specialist or general practice training. The programme gives new doctors the opportunity to put all of their knowledge and skills into practice in a real environment. Foundation schools are not actual physical buildings or campuses but a group of institutions such as hospitals, hospices and GP practices which are overseen and administered by local staff.

With foundation schools located in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland there are a number of aspects to consider when choosing which school you would prefer, of course location is important but also you should keep in mind which specialisations are offered and how many places are available. In 2011, nearly 92% of applicants were allocated a place in one of their top five preferred locations.
The Foundation Programme provides trainees with various opportunities apart from clinical experience and skills. The programme provides an opportunity to undertake a taster in your career of choice. I have found the Foundation Programme and the eportfolio very useful in helping me make career decisions and prepare for ST applications.

The Foundation Programme is exactly that, a foundation. It provides a new doctor with the experience and clinical practice on which to build a long and successful career. Heres what some doctors who have taken part in the Foundation Programme had to say: I undertook a placement in general practice during my F2 year. This proved to be a valuable placement to me in so many ways. I always felt supported during my placement. A senior partner supervised me during each clinic; they provided quick and easily accessible advice and would also review patients when I was unsure.

I had a supportive team of seniors doctors and nursing staff; they made the transition to what was my first real job so much easier. There are people there who have been working at the hospital for far longer than you have and they will have some gems of advice to share with you. Always know that you are not alone. Gute Sprachkenntnisse des Arztes gibt dem Patienten ein Sicherheitsgefhl, das an der ArztPatient-Beziehung eine besondere Rolle spielt.

Wenn das Sprachzertifikat bestanden wurde, kommt es nichtsdestotrotz in der tglichen Praxis zu Verstndigungsproblemen mit Patienten. Das Sprachzertifikat sagt in der Wirklichkeit nicht viel ber die tatschlichen Sprachkenntnisse und Kommunikationsfhigkeiten eines Menschen aus. Von den Psychiatern oder Neurologen erfordert man Sprachkenntnisse auf einem besserem Niveau als von anderen rzten. Ihre tatschlichen Sprachkenntnisse sollten auf dem Niveau C1 sein, wobei, um eine Approbation bzw. eine Berufserlaubnis zu bekommen, das B2Zertifikat reicht. Fr sie ist die

Wie viele Kliniken in Deutschland ihren auslndischen Eingestellten einen Sprachkurs finanzieren, ist nicht bekannt, weil es eine freiwillige Leistung ist. Schtzungsweise nutzt fast die Hlfte der Kliniken die Kurse. Sprachbarriere kann sicher dramatische Folgen mit sich bringen. In Deutschland arbeiten immer mehr rzte aus dem Ausland, die inzwischen in fast jeder Klinik zu finden sind. Doch nicht jeder von ihnen beherrscht die deutsche Sprache ausreichend. Das kann fr Patienten gravierende Folgen haben. Davon zeugt der Fall von einem DeutschAmerikaner Cary Bachenheimer, der in einer Reha-Klinik Schmerzen im Bauchbereich auf einmal gesprt hat. Langsam wurde sein Bauch grer und grer. Er konnte nichts mehr auer vor Schmerzen schreien. Sein Dickdarm ist angerissen und es fhrte zu einer lebensgefhrlichen Situation. Er fhlte sich von seinem Arzt gar nicht verstanden. Erst spter hat sich herausgestellt, dass der Arzt aus Bulgarien kommt. Der bulgarische Arzt hat kein Deutsch gesprochen oder verstanden, so Cary Bachenheimer. Erst ein paar Stunden spter wurde der Patient von einem Notarzt verlegt und notoperiert.

Since 2011, the biggest increases in 2012 were in ophthalmology (+9%), pediatrics (+5%), nephrology (+4%), rheumatology (+4%), and oncology (+4%). Looking at the income gap between male and female doctors, in general the income gap is slowly narrowing but by no means has it reached a level playing field. Overall, for 2012, male doctors across all specialties reported earnings about 40% higher than female physicians. In primary care, men earn 23% more. However, in some medical fields the gap is leveling. Male obstetricians and gynecologists report earnings about 12% higher than their female collegues. Male pathologists report earnings that are about 8% higher than females pathologists. When considering

Partners in private practice earned a mean of $308,000. Solo-practice doctors earned a mean of $222,000, while employed doctors earned the least, a mean of $194,000. $236,000 compared to $125,000. Board certification is important not just for compensation. It can be required for inclusion in health plans and for hospital privileges. Overall, doctors are split about whether they feel fairly compensated: 51% said yes, 49% said no (nearly identical to Medscape's 2011 compensation survey). Physicians most unsatisfied with their compensation were endocrinologists (62%) and plastic surgeons (62%). General surgeons take more calls and deal with more life-threatening situations, and generally earn less among surgeons. They have long felt dissatisfied. Specialties like plastic surgeory have been hit hard by the economic downturn. Those who felt fairly compensated were dermatologists (71%), pathologists (63%), radiologists (62%), and emergency physicians (61%). For various reasons, including increased paperwork, doctors are becoming more frustrated with their work. The 2012 survey shows far more dissatisfaction among doctors across all specialties. In fact, just over 54% of all physicians said they would choose medicine again as a career. In 2011, about 70% of all doctors said they would choose medicine again. In 2011, the satisfaction scores peaked at 80% for dermatologists, and were over 70% for radiologists and oncologists. In the 2012 survey the most satisfied specialty was again derma-
The mean annual salary of MD specialists may seem impressive at first glance but the data also shows doctors are becoming more dissatisfied. A decrease in overall salaries for 2012 is not the only reason for dissatisfaction among medical practitioners. Long working hours, paperwork and expenses have impacted satisfaction rates. Also, doctors agree there are too many middle-men and the corporate structure of medicine in the US too often dictates how medicine is practiced. In the future, these issues will have to be addressed and the situation closely followed. It's worth mentioning that medicine is still a prestigious, lucrative and respected trade. Currently, the medical system in the US is undergoing changes meant to positively impact medical practice and patient care.

Try to evaluate your CV objectively and create a list of questions that you would ask according to the information given. Most commonly you can expect questions concerning your educational background, why you chose that particular study path, what motivated you and how you dealt with difficulties during your studies.

The interview is perhaps the most important part of the recruitment process. If you have made it to this stage it means that the documents you submitted have been positively received and you have a decent chance of getting the job. Thats half the battle over! Now, all that remains is to convince the employer that they have made a good decision and that you are the right person for the job.

You should also anticipate questions about your professional life. Expect to be asked about why you chose to change jobs and also about specific situations that may have occurred during your previous employment.
It is also important to spend some time looking carefully at the job requirements for the position you are applying for and comparing them with your experience. What skills do you possess that would be beneficial to the company. These answers can be prepared in detail in advance, even if you are not specifically asked about something that you feel is worth emphasising you can attempt to work it into the conversation at some point. More often than not an interviewer will ask about your aspirations for the future, your career goals, where you expect to be in five or ten years. Employers will also be interested in specific reasons why you left your previous jobs, explanations for any changes in career and details about why you would like to work for their company. It is very important to provide good reasons for leaving a previous position in addition to explaining what your expectations are from the new position. An extremely common question is that concerning strengths and weaknesses. The best candidates will have an answer prepared. The worst possible answer is to say that you do not have any weaknesses, the interviewer will think that you are uninventive or that you are simply lying. Additionally, do not try to be clever and say something that is clichd such as Im a perfectionist. Be honest about your weaknesses but try to talk about them in the past tense and say how you have learnt and developed from your mistakes. "Do you have any questions?" - often the last but certainly not the least important question the interviewer will ask. A candidate who is unprepared can often be surprised by this question and not be able to come up with anything. This is the worst thing you can do. A serious candidate should already have some questions prepared to show that they have researched the position and that they are interested in the work the company does. So what questions should you ask? Use this opportunity to show that you understand the position and are interested in the future of the company. How will my success be measured? What are the long term goals for the company? You can also enquire about the next step in the interview process.

Your cover letter should also include some information regarding your personal characteristics. It is worth pointing out your involvement not only in your field of study and employment but also how you have developed a variety of skills in other areas outside of your professional life. For example, "... apart from gaining technical knowledge during my studies, I had the opportunity to improve my relationships with people. As vice president of the student association I was responsible for the organisation of over a dozen events for incoming students. I believe the skills I developed during that time will be valuable in my future career. You can also refer directly to your CV: further information regarding my financial management experience can be found in my CV. It is important to be confident and convincing when communicating your skills and abilities, use positive expressions such as: I can, I am capable and I achieved.
Finally, you should conclude your letter with a phrase such as, "... I believe that my skill-set matches perfectly with your requirements. I would welcome the opportunity for an interview with your organization. Thank you for your time and consideration, I am available at your convenience.
Dear, X I have been following your job board and have noticed your cancer research group is growing. Candidates for your new medical research centre in London must be experienced technicians with strong academic credentials. They must also be capable of working in a team collaborating research efforts with your partners in Germany.
