"President's Message"
FOCUS ON THE FUTURE This past spring several of our members have met and are continuing to meet for the purpose of formulating ideas for programs, fundraising and community outreach. The goal is to expand the horizons of the Society and the Museum and reach a larger audience. We are aiming for young families and hope to build our membership, while developing opportunities to increase volunteers, leaders and board members. In the future we will investigate collaborations with the Greece Library and other organizations such as Two Doors Community Resource Center, scout groups and schools. We will research publishing books and booklets, and creating new exhibits. If you would be willing to contribute your time or talent or know someone who might become a good docent, researcher, collection care manager, gift shop volunteer, or board member, please call 225-7221 or email greecehistoricalsociety@yahoo.com. ON-CELL MESSAGING Recently we have been working with On-Cell, a local mobile phone messaging company and we soon plan to begin recording messages about our exhibits. These messages will not replace our great docents, but will have the possibility of enhancing the experience of our visitors with detailed information about certain exhibits. We will have more information about this exciting program in the near future.

On Tuesday, May 8th, nearly 150 people attended our program featuring Rochesters preeminent modern architect, Mr. James Johnson. Using construction footage and images, Mr. Johnson discussed many of his local projects and the methods used to create them, including the Liberty Pole, Temple Sinai, the Mushroom House, St. John the Evangelist Church, and others. The program was held inside St. Johns Church. Unfortunately the sound system made it difficult to hear. However, with the financial help of Mike Sofia, the Doan Dealerships, St. Johns Women's Guild, and other donations, we were able to have the program professionally video recorded. This resulted in a much better sound quality on the recording. In the near future we will be expanding the video to add an introduction and additional footage, including more about St. Johns Church. Check the Corinthian, our monthly e-mail or Facebook for information on the release of our new video.

SWEET SENSATIONS ANOTHER SUCESSFUL FESTIVAL On Monday June 18th, nearly 350 of our neighbors and friends enjoyed generous dessert samples from Mels Diner, Tops Market, Fleming Point, Villages at Unity and Legacy at Park Crescent and our new neighbor to the south, Tim Hortons. Some of the samples included strawberry shortcake, cookies, iced coffee, chocolate dipped strawberries and strawberry salad. Grilled food was also available, unfortunately the vendor, Rolling Caf, sold out early. Community groups also shared information about their organizations including: Petra Place, the Charlotte Genesee Lighthouse, the Animal Service League, the Greece Community & Senior Center, North Greece Fire Department and the Army Strong Community Center. Flyin Brian and Miss Understood of Party Productions provided face painting, balloon art and a bounce house for the little ones. Music & Memories and Arikata Martial Arts also provided additional entertainment during the evening. Inside the museum guests were able to view our new exhibits on Girl Scouts and Local Men of the Civil War. Many enjoyed a tatting demonstration with Midges Tatters in the dining room and a Civil War display from the Military History Society of Rochester in the living room. Thank you to the countless volunteers who helped with your time and talents, to the businesses that supplied door prizes and raffle prizes and to Paul Anken of Blaze Entertainment and to Party Productions for providing the DJ and MC. Special thanks go to Wegmans, Vay-Schleich & Meeson and NW Bank for their financial sponsorship. Finally, thank you to our friends and neighbors who came to support the Greece Historical Society.

FROM THE HISTORIAN'S FILE The Civil War Exhibit - Honoring Greece Soldiers
Our newest, long term exhibit has just opened and features Greece citizens who served in "The War of the Rebellion" (1861 to1865). Highlighted are several of the units where the largest group of Greece volunteers enlisted. Rare photos and other memorabilia are on loan from private sources and the Greece Historian's Office. Information and photos of some of the local service men are on view along with gravesites in several cemeteries. A roster of all the Greece citizens who served during the war is listed with other information about their service. This listing is available in a binder with veteran and widow pension data. The Grand Army of the Republic was an important organization of war veterans and influenced the election of five Republican presidents who served in the Civil War from 1866 to 1900. Some of that story is also in the binder for the visitor's perusal. Should you be a descendent of someone from Greece who served in this war, please contact the Historian's Office; we would like to hear from you. Everyone, be sure to visit this important and interesting exhibit.

Girl Scouting - Celebrating 100 years

The Girl Scouts of America are celebrating their 100th anniversary. Juliette Low was the founder who established the Girl Scout troops to encourage girls to participate as valued citizens. She set high ideals for the members. The Girl Scouts of Western New York have joined us to exhibit some of the earlier scout and leader uniforms, plus memorabilia. Added to the display are items from The Greece Historical Society collection. All Girl Scouts, young and former members, are invited to come and help us celebrate this important anniversary. Stop in and see us soon. Sharon Logan, Museum Committee

"Lets Go For An Excursion" - and never leave the county

That is just what families and couples might do in the summer of 1912. Sunday was the ideal time for an outing as the average work week was 5 and one half days. The Rochester area was lucky to have Lake Ontario and Irondequoit Bay close at hand where they might travel for the cool breezes. Remember, it was before the days of inexpensive room fans or air conditioning. Between 1900 and 1924, a Mr. J.D. Scott (a very resourceful entrepreneur) came up with a scheme he called "The Pink Ticket Trip". He offered tickets from a small tent he would put up at the downtown four corners (Main and State). For a special 50 cent ticket (thats $11.15 today) you boarded the Lake Avenue Trolley to Charlotte and Ontario Beach Park to see the sites there and perhaps have a ride on the circle swing or the "The Breezer" (Roller Coaster). You might have a photo taken at the outdoor tintype photographer with your "sweetie", as it was an inexpensive and nice souvenir. Then it's off to board the J.D.Scott for a short lake trip to the dock at Sea Breeze. At the end of the dock is a small restaurant called "The Hawaiian Gardens". A dance floor with automatic music provided by a Wurlitzer Orchestra Piano entertained the early afternoon crowd, Later on, a five piece live orchestra was on hand to keep the dancers feet tapping to lively two steps, waltzes and the Turkey-Trot! Then over the railroad tracks of the "Hojack Line" to Sea Breeze Park with a small coaster and a carousel built and run by the Long family of Philadelphia. The cotton candy is quite good as well as the fresh roasted peanuts. Down a path which leads to Irondequoit Bay theres a Naphtha or Gasoline Launch, waiting to take passengers down to the end of the Bay. Stops could be made at any of the numerous hotels along the west bank, such as Pt. Pleasant, Birds and Worms, the Newport House etc. The final stop on the Bay was Glen Haven Park with its large hotel, beautiful grounds and an amusement park on the south end. If lunch had not been had earlier, but brought along (which was often the case), this was the place to spend some time. A large stage with vaudeville acts always attracted large crowds. Boarding a Sodus Bay & Rochester Trolley for a trip back to the station on East Main Street, the car went through a number of Irondequoit's wooded glens and over several streams. Gathering umbrellas, coats, ties, large ladies hats and lunch baskets for the last time, you rode the West Main trolley back to Main and State Street and to transfer points at Clinton or St Paul Street. The trip could be made in reverse and the length of time at each stopover was only governed by the ticket holder. The only caution being, the final boats on the bay and lake stopped running around dusk. Wouldnt it be fun to take a trip back in time to enjoy the one day excursion??? Remember, all electronic devices must be left at J.D. Scotts tent fore boarding the trolley........
