Network Security Administrator

Role Description A Network Security Administrator designs, implements and manages a comprehensive computer systems security policy for an organization or business unit that includes protecting data processing sites, systems and data from physical disasters, interpersonal threats and computer system vulnerabilities. The focus is on creating strategies for blending system usability with security to develop and implement a policy that will allow the organization or business unit to achieve its business goals in a secure manner. The Sun Network Security Administrator is a high level technical position. The Sun Network Security Administrator works as a member of a specialized team and is responsible for providing strategic and tactical technical leadership to System and Network Administrators and providing management with technical advice within the area of computer systems security. Job Family A Network Security Administrator is a role within the general job family of Computer Operations and Support and is typically contained within a large computer and network operation supporting an enterprise wide datacenter. Key Responsibilities The Sun Network Security Administrator is a high level position for individuals with experience in administering networks in a Solaris environment. A Network Security Administrator must: Operate within an enterprise wide environment. Be able to execute mid to high level network administration and management duties. Be able to execute the full range of network security responsibilities and provide technical leadership to System Administrators and Network Managers and Administrators on operational matters relating to computer systems security. Demonstrate very good oral, written and presentation skills. Have the ability to dialogue with mid to higher management in the creation of a security policy that effectively protects information system assets and allows the enterprise or business unit to achieve its business goals. Be able to plan, schedule and monitor own work as well as the work of junior technical personnel.

Core Tasks A Network Security Administrator is required to perform the following tasks: Install, configure and administer Design and implement computer system security policies. Define and install the rules that support a security policy. Perform vulnerability, threat, and risk assessments for computer systems including networks. Identify and counter computer attacker methodologies.

Resolve computer system security vulnerabilities. Develop and implement disaster recovery plans. Evaluate and select security methods to provide a first level of security preparedness. Perform costbenefit analysis of security versus utility of different options for assuring computer system security. Monitor network security status.

Secondary/Optional Tasks Depending on an organizations environment and work structure and individual skill, a Network Security Administrator may perform the following tasks: Monitor network operational status. Manage network objects, user groups, users and services. Mentor junior Network Security Administrators.

Other Knowledge and Skills A Sun Network Security Administrator should possess the following knowledge and skills: High level of awareness of customer, business and user issues keep customer focus, the needs of internal users and the businesss security needs in mind when taking action or making decisions impacting service level agreements. Understand current and emerging technical trends in the area of computer systems security and be able to assist management in making security versus usability tradeoff decisions.

Education and Experience Minimum of post secondary education (e.g. Associates Degree in Computer or Network Technology) with at least 5 years experience as a Sun systems Administrator or Manager.
