TUTORIAL 1.0 - CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT AND MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES

1. 2. 3. 4 5. 6

Discuss various objects of construction management. What are functions of construction management? Explain briefly each. Write short note on Work breakdown structure. List out construction management techniques and Explain Gantt bar chart with its uses. Explain LOB Techniques. A Project consist of eight activites P,Q,R,S,T,U,V and W with their times of completion as follows Activities P Q R S T U V W Duration (days) 3 5 3 5 7 5 6 5

The precedence relationship are as follows: P & Q are performed parallel R & S can not start until P is completed. T cannot start until half the work of activity R is complete. U can start only after activity S is complete. V succeds R. W is the last activity, which should succed T. (a) Draw bar chart (b) Give your comments and conclusion.

Briefly explain various classifications of equipments.

Explain various factors affecting on selection of equipments.

Explain in detail various financial aspects of procuring construction equipments. The original cost of power shovel is Rs. 1050000/- and its salvage value is 8 % of the original cost. The power shovel is used for 1800 hours per year and its life is 5 years. The hiring charges for the power shovel including maintenance and repairs is Rs. 45000/- per month. Suggest whether the power shovel should be purchased or hired. A concrete dam is proposed to be constructed. It will require 2.20 million tonnes of stone aggregates. The estimate for constructing a temporary road is Rs. 52 lacs. The hauling charges of stone aggregates is Rs. 22/- per tonne for truck. The original cost of belt conveyor is Rs. 82 lacs. Its salvage value is 20 % of the original cost of bel conveyor. The maintenance and repair charges are 30 % of depreciated value and eclectic power consumption is 60 % of original cost. Which is best alternative for hauling of stone aggregates truck or belt conveyor? What is the use of Present worth analysis in engineering economic studies? What is depreciation? Explain straight line method and sinking fund method. Write short note on owning and operating cost of equipments. Explain various factors affecting economic life of equipment. Discuss in details various reasons for replacement of construction equipment Determine the probable cost of owning and operating a 3m3.diesel engine power shovel given the following details. Engine= 160 HP Crane case capacity = 30 litres Use fuel life = 6 years Time between oil changes = 120 hours Shipping weigth = 104 hours Factory price of equipment = Rs. 700000 Operating factor = 0.6 Freight charges = Rs. 30/ tonnes Unloading and assemble charges = Rs. 700 Hours used/year = 5500 hours. From the following data for a rear dump truck. Find out probable cost of owning and operating. Original cost = Rs. 850000 Insurance Premium per year = Rs. 50000 Annual investment cost = 15 % of avg. Investment Estimated useful life. = 6 years Operating time = 3 shifts x 8 hours/day x 26 days /month. Efficiency factor = 0.90 Salvage Value = 20 % of original cost Maintenance and repair = 50 % of annual depreciation. Annual overhead cost = Rs. 30000 Fuel and lubricant cost/hr= Rs. 300 Monthly salary of operator & helper = Rs. 8000 Cost of one tyre = Rs. 3500/- ( At least 6 tyres per year) Use constant percentage method of depreciation. A Construction equipment was purchase in Rs. 15000. Assuming its salvage value at end of 5 years to be Rs. 1500. Determine the amount of depreciation for each year by sinking fund method. Considering rate of interest 4 % per annum. The original cost of roller is Rs. 800000. And its salvage value is 10 % of its original cost. The roller is used for 1500 hours per year and life is 5 years. The hiring charges for the same type of roller including maintenance & repairs are Rs. 30000. Per month. Suggest whether the roller should be purchased or hired.
