June 1997

A man should keep his friendship in constant repair - Samuel Johnson (1755).

BANDS OF THE MONTH FOR JUNE ARE 10 METERS AND VHF

Friends Welcome to the first News Sheet published from Highcroft Farmhouse, our new QTH at Pulborough in West Sussex. We moved here on 20 May officially, but actually moved on the 19, 20 and 21 May! This is what happens when you combine a business with a home and have hobbies like amateur radio and gardening that involve lots of bulky items. The removal company allocated three full size removal vans for us and even then they had to return the week after we moved in with what they were unable to load onto the third van, and that was after we had gone through everything and thrown a lot of things away! Anyway, we are here, and in the process of sorting the packing cases out and getting our business up and running again. We have been beset with all sorts of problems and snags and can now understand why so many of you said you would never move again. However, we are looking to the longer term when everything is sorted out, and when we will have time to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the countryside surrounding us. We are back on E-mail, but with a new provider (g4bue@adur-press.prestel.co.uk), back on the UK DX Cluster and have the new telephone and fax numbers working. All that remains now is to get the Butternut vertical erected to get back on the air, and then follows more detailed antenna planning. Some overseas members may receive envelopes with our old address on for the next month or two. Please dont think we have moved back to Alamosa; we are using up our stock of printed envelopes!

To set the record straight, the ticket price for Lords 1997 is 27.50. Please send your cheques, payable to FOC, direct to Maud. If you are paying Elliott, W2MUM, then $44 will do nicely. The list of overseas members who have expressed an interest continues to grow: VE7NH, K1AJ, K1RM, WIRM, K2VUI, N4AR, K5NA and ZL3GQ to name a few. The Southern California DX Club have announced that the 1998 International DX Convention will be held 1/3 May at the Holiday Inn, Visalia, California. Can one of our W6 members confirm whether the FOC West Coast Dinner dinner is going to be held on the Friday evening as usual? This will be one week before the Washington DC Dinner and two weeks before the Dayton Hamvention and the FOC Breakfast on the Sunday morning. Reservations at the Holiday Inn can be made from 1 June for 1997 attendees and from 1 August for others. I have now made a small program, that converts the E-mail list to formats that can be imported or used in other programmes. At the moment it can make files for Pegasus Mail, WWMail and Netscape Mail. The programme uses my E-mail list, and makes the files that you want from that file. If you would like to take a look at the programme, it can be downloaded from this address: <http://home3.inet.tele.dk/rene/ email/email.html>. Please read the FOC.DOC file before using the program. The E-mail listing can also be downloaded here. Congratulations to Bob, W6RGG, and Bob, W6RJ, on being elected new members of the CQ DX Hall of Fame at Dayton. They were two of only three new members. Congratulations also to John, K1AR, on being elected to the CQ Contest Hall of Fame.

MEMBERS NEWS by G4BUE

DJ3KR: Jurgen is QRV as BV3/DJ3KR until 17 June from the National Centre University in Chung-Li, mostly WARC bands. G3IZD: Ivor was QRV from Captiva Island, Florida (IOTA NA-069) in May with his AE4WK call. G3NOH: Jacky and George had a wonderful time at the North American Weekend enjoying the terrific hospitality. Dayton was impressive and we made a few new friends there. G3SWH: Phil and Jim, G3RTE, will be QRV 28/30 June from St Nicholas Island (IOTA EU-094) as F/G3RTE/P (SSB) and F/G3SWH/P (CW), 80-10m with two stations. G4DJX: Sarita and Alan are moving to a new QTH in July but in the meantime are living with Alans parents with temporary antennas! G4MVA: Glynn has decided to drop out of the club as he will shortly be retiring to Wales, and new interests indicate that he will be increasingly inactive in amateur radio. Best wishes for the future and thanks for your past support of FOC. G4PKD: Lorraine and Jack would like to sincerely thank Holger, DK4LX, and Petra, and indeed all members who attended the recent ConDin, for the wonderful hospitality shown to them. Heres to the next time. GM4SID: Sid will be QRV 24/29 July from GMDJIs QTH on Yell Island (IOTA EU012). In the IOTA Contest he will use CW and SSB making it the first SSB Contest he has ever done! KP4/AA5DX: Congratulations to Suzanne and Ron on the birth of a baby boy, Blaize, in April. W1NV: Billie and Carl will be back in the UK in the autumn, but they will not be attending Lords. Please add Carls call to the 1997 Windle sheet as it was inadvertently omitted. Sorry Carl.

1998 WEST COAST DINNER by G4BUE

E-MAIL by OZ1LQH

HALL OF FAME by G4BUE

K1RM: Vin and Sherry had a wonderful time at the DC Dinner and are planning to attend Lords this year after a visit to Ireland. K4LQ: Fred is QRV again from his new QTH only a stones throw from Vic, N4TO; Joe WB4OSN and the rest of the Sebring gang and rejoins the clubs active list. He has a five band quad at 60 feet, slopers for 40 metres, and an inverted vee for 30 and 80 metres. He has taken on editing the Florida Contest Club newsletter which, he says, should ensure a lot of contest activity. K6OU: Bruce was intending to operate from South Carolina at the end of May while visiting his son in Fayeteville, the first time he has operated from the East Coast after 64 years on the air! Congratulations to Bruce on his election as President of the Colorado Chapter of QCWA for the next year. LA3FL: Per was due to leave the Crystal Symphony in the middle of May and after visiting friends in California, was flying home to see how his antennas survived the harsh Norweigan winter. N2DAN: Members will be shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Steve (Dan) on 20 May. N4AR: Bill had new member Mary, GBQV, as a house guest over the Dayton week-end. They counted 48 FOC members at Dayton and know they missed at least one, said the FOC Sunday Breakfast went well and the weather was near perfect. OH2EA: Hans has changed his call, but will retain OH2BDP which he used for 33 years, to use only when particularly nasty pangs of nostalgia hit me). W1HL: Jim has new beams up and running following the collapse of his tower during an ice storm on 7 December. W4/GIHM: Ursula is in England until 30 September (47 Longdown Road, Congleton, Cheshire CW12 4QH) and is buying a mobile home in Welford on Avon, where Ray is buried.
