After school I went to the cupboard. I could hear the faint sound of my mobile ringing.

I reached towards my jacket but the phone wasnt there. It appeared to be coming from one of the jackets in the far corner. I groped further inside the cupboard to the furthest away jacket but it wasnt in that one either. The sound seemed to be coming from behind the wall. I skewed my eyes to listen. It was definitely my mobile I recognized the ring tone. I went to touch the wall to investigate and my hand went clean through. I reached further. I thought this was a moment of a lifetime and walked over to the other side. I was inside an identical cupboard to the one I just left. The phone was ringing in my usual jacket only it was now hanging up at the far end of the cupboard at the point where I had came through. I was about to put my hand in the jacket and pick up the phone to answer when the cupboard door opened. i crouched and hid behind the jacket hoping I wouldnt be seen. I saw my wife enter and reach over for the jacket. My wife was supposed to be at work right now. She got hold of the phone and said hello but nobody was on the other end as she repeatedly said hello before placing the phone back in the jacket and closing the cupboard. I went over to the cupboard door and pushed it but it did not give way. I pushed and pushed. I was feeling a bit uneasy now and quickly went back to the point in the wall from where I entered but my hand was blocked by the wall. Panicking I groped over every part of the wall. I screamed and shouted and pushed and fought. Nobody heard me. I told myself that this had to be one of those nightmares you get when you fall asleep in a dream and when you wake up in the dream you realise in a flash that you are still dreaming and you frantically try to wake yourself up Out of the blue I heard a piercing phone ringing inside the cupboard. It wasnt the same tone as mine and it wasnt coming from my jacket. I waited for the cupboard door to open. I couldnt keep my excitement in and burst out screaming with joy and hope. Suddenly a young woman appeared in front of me from nowhere and bumping into me she screamed. I screamed back. She turned round quickly and frantically slapped her fists against the wall. She looked familiar. Mandy! The word escaped from me and she turned round and looked at me searchingly. I tried to calm her down. I blurted out to try to remember all those times during the day when mum was at work we would go to the park and I would send her up to the sky in the swing and she would say higher and higher because so she could touch heaven. She remembered and stopped crying. Dad! The word came from her. The fear had evaporated from her. I asked her how she got here. The same thing had happened to her. The phone rang in the cupboard only it seemed to be coming from the other side of the wall. I said that was what happened to me. Mum said you had left us. One day she got a call from work to say that you hadnt picked me up from school. Have you been here all this time? What is here? She suddenly turned pale. That means were stuck!

She crouched and sobbed in silence. I felt powerless. I looked around in despair and noticed the presence of a new jacket hanging up on a cloak hanger. Is that your jacket? It wasnt there before Yes it is but how did it? Did you leave your phone in the jacket? Yes.... but how does that help? Wait a while dont touch it. Wait for your phone to ring and if it rings and if the cupboard door opens make a dash to get out no matter who is at the door even if its mum! We waited in high alert. The phone didnt ring and I was already beginning to lose hope. I could see the same look on Mandys face. I suddenly had an idea. I asked her what her mobile number was and I went into my jacket and brought out my phone and rang the number. Get ready to jump out! I pressed the okay button on the phone and Mandys phone rang. Involuntarily we smiled. The cupboard door opened and Mandy ran through. Bursting with joy I followed I was outside primary school. Mandy ran out of the building with the rest of the youngsters. She put her arms round me and hugged. With her hand held tight in mine I turned to go home. She tugged me back. Daddie-Daddie - lets go to the park - I want to touch heaven.
