THE SAINTS
Value the Past, Enjoy the Present and Building the Future We value the past by acknowledging our history, and those who built it, learning from their experience and respecting their dream . To enjoy the present, we work hard to encourage participation and achieve success in the game, the club and community. We will build for the future with enthusiasm and energy by developing an environment where there are rugby opportunities for everyone. To achieve this we will be innovative and maintain our strong family ethos which is underpinned by Catholic values.

From the Club Chairman

011 has been a difficult year for rugby in the North Harbour province. Playing numbers are significantly down across senior, junior and school rugby grades. There are serious challenges to address at both club and union level if our game is to survive, let alone to thrive. Our world continues to change rapidly, and the key to thriving is for us to recognise those changes, to plan for them and to implement the plan. Even the successful clubs in our union face significant challenges. While the nature of the challenge does differ between clubs, the core challenge for all clubs is participation. As a club Marist does a lot of things well. In my view, the best illustration of that is the success of its junior club, of which we are all justifiably proud. It is well organised, successful in fostering the game, respected, and generally epitomises the clubs core values. It achieves this because parents and families make the effort to ensure that their own children and others have coaches, managers and administrators that give up their time so the game can be learned, played and enjoyed. I take the opportunity to convey my sincere thanks to each and every one of those junior coaches, managers and administrators for their efforts throughout 2011. I hope you found it rewarding, and that you will continue to support Marist in 2012 and the years to come. Without your individual and collective commitment, we cannot exist. Congratulations to Sean Urwin who made the North Harbour Roller Mills team, and Casey Forsyth, Aydan Osborne & Brandon Marks who made the

Aucklands Supporters Club U14 team. Also to our J3 team who made the final against Silverdale, and two other teams in semi finals also illustrated our success on the field. The senior club has had its own particular challenges this year. After a promising start with solid performances at the sevens tournament and Spillane, early in the season, we lost both our Premier and Senior 1st coaches, each for different but valid reasons. At the same time many of last seasons players retired or did not return, and other senior coaches had already migrated elsewhere. With a young squad and new coaches, the teams performed with spirit and resolve. They grew during the season, and while not emulating previous achievements, we could see their development in almost every game. Certainly, they have built a platform from which we would expect to see further development next year. Special mention needs to be made of the contributions of Johnny Beckett (JB), Blair Urlich and Alan Nicholas for their efforts with the Prems and Senior 1sts. They all stepped up and met the challenge. The measure of their success is probably found in the way the young players responded. A number of younger players made their Prems debuts this year.

ighlights during the year included the following players achieving their 50 game blazers: Sam Ward, Danny Morrison, and James Gill. Congratulations to all of you! This is a significant achievement and we share your pride in this milestone. Marist also achieved representative honours through Tony Woodcock & Anthony Boric (All Blacks, S15 & North Harbour) Tom Chamberlain, Ben Afeaki (S15 & North Harbour) Mike Read, Luke Devcich, Rudi Wulf, Scott Uren (North Harbour) Travis Larsen, Thomas Faiva (NHRU U20), Travis Larsen (NZ Universities) Rob Lunevich (NZ Marist Colts) Scott Uren (NZ Marist XV) In the under 21s injury created opportunity, with two young senior players, both club stalwarts, Nick Blincoe and Sam Ward stepping up early to coach the U 21s. Together with their management team of James Clarke and Graham Ward, they moulded a team together. Thanks to each of you for your efforts. That team demonstrated cohesion and unity off the field as well as on it. They supported each other and in the club house, dressed in their number ones, actually set some of the standards that other teams should aspire to in the way they presented themselves. Special thanks must also go to their enthusiastic and ever present sponsors, Furnex, who were often present at the game and the after match functions. U 19s struggled throughout the season for numbers. Their struggle reflected the difficulty I referred to earlier across the union. In spite of these challenges, Blair Franklin and Mike Kelly worked hard throughout the season to keep the team engaged and fronting up each Saturday. Thanks to each of you for your dedication. This year we fielded two teams in the Senior 2 nd competition, the perennial Flyers and a new team, the Spartans.

It was our newest team that achieved the pinnacle of club success by winning the competition, and in doing so accounting for the previously unbeaten North Shore Suits in an epic final! Our warm congratulations for keeping our winning streak (one grade winner each year for the last three years) alive. The Flyers continue to perform with a fluctuating player base, because of their work commitments, but each weekend they turn out in Marist colours and do us proud. Thanks to Kim Bevins, Andrew Page and Jason Price for your dedicated efforts keeping this team together and an important part of the Marist family.

ean Ford once again coached our U 85 team, helped by Peter Stirrat & Kane Green. With Sam Kelly providing dedicated management the team was well served. Thanks to all of you for your sterling work and commitment. The team was competitive throughout the season, with several narrow losses. Four member of the squad were nominated for the North Harbour Trials. Last but definitely not least, the indefatigable Blue Bellies continue to demonstrate the very best of what rugby is all about through their play in the Presidents Grade. The camaraderie and the joy of the game will never be lost so long as old buggers keep on playing! Marist can be justifiably proud of the fact that it managed to field 8 teams in the senior competition, more than any other club in the union. I now turn to comment on a matter that has involved a considerable amount of time and effort during the last two years. For the last few seasons we have noticed one particularly disturbing trend in the senior club, which appears in rather stark contrast to what we espouse as the club culture. That trend is an increasing lack of responsibility and willingness by senior players to pay their annual subscriptions.

At present, the senior club players owe a total of in excess of $11,000 in unpaid subs to the club. Last year the figure was over $5,000. By way of contrast, the Juniors shortfall this year is $400.00. Last year, the board recognised, with the benefit of some careful analysis by our treasurer, Craig le Quesne, that the senior club costs Marist about $25k per annum more to run than its previous subscriptions were proving. A consideration of the details showed that by paying a team subscription for just 22 players, (as was the case then) the club was subsidising significant numbers of players, and had limited ability to oversee its income in relation to costs. The club constitution provides for each member, playing or otherwise to pay a subscription. It was therefore decided by the board that each player would be individually invoiced for their annual subscription at the time they registered. It needs to be recorded that this approach was not agreed to unanimously, but that a clear majority supported it. Considerable effort went into reminding all players of their obligations. Because we recognise that times are difficult, all players were made aware that they could pay by instalments. Teams were visited several times and reminded. Individuals were spoken to. To be fair, many players were quick to ensure they had met their obligations. Too many however, seemed to regard it as the clubs privilege to have them play for Marist. This casual disregard for their obligations and the consequence it has for the clubs on-going solvency cannot continue. It is out of integrity with the clubs values and unacceptable on any level. Some efforts were made to restrict players selection in teams until subs were paid, but the decline in player numbers, injury pressures and player availability made this sanction very difficult for coaches. Next season, a harder line must be taken. Players who do not pay their subscriptions within the prescribed time limits will not be selected until such time as they have done so. If they are not prepared to meet their obligations, Marist does not want them.

he club management, team coaches and management give up their time to ensure that the club infrastructure exists for players to play the game. The subscription charged is less than half of what players from other codes such as tennis, hockey, cricket and soccer pay for their annual subscriptions. There is simply no excuse for this chronic failure to meet their responsibilities. Players who have not paid this year will find their outstanding balances from 2011 on their 2012 invoices. As many of you will be aware, Marist faces some other significant challenges for its future. In 2014, our lease at North Harbour Stadium expires. We understand that the current plans for the stadiums future do not include a long-term presence of the Marist. However, until such time as we have found another home, the Stadium is likely to provide year-by-year renewals after 2014. Mindful of these challenges, we secured a Lotteries funding grant to undertake a feasibility study of the future options for Marist. That study has been systematically undertaken over the last 15 months or more. The Feasibility Study is now completed and will be available on the website shortly. Hard copies will be available at our AGM on the 3 rd November where we will set aside some time for discussions and questions. Please be aware that this will not be an occasion for the club as a whole to endorse any particular option identified in the report. That task will be undertaken at a later stage. However, we would invite you to read the report carefully and to be prepared to engage in both discussions and ultimately action to preserve the clubs future. At the time of writing this, the Rugby World Cup has begun in spectacular and wonderfully New Zealand style! The opening ceremony and the occasion galvanised involvement like no other event in the countrys history, and the opening weekend games fulfilled the promise of the build up.

I urge all of you to take advantage of our new bar and kitchen facilities and to come down to the club to watch the games with your friends and playing colleagues. It is an occasion worth celebrating, and the club will benefit from your patronage. On that note I particularly wish to record my thanks to all of the board and the junior committee for their support and hard work throughout the season. The 200 Club committee and the Golf committee continue to provide financial assistance for the club. I commend our golf day to you on 29th September and thank the members for their support. Craig and Linda le Quesne have been tireless again this year. Mindful of these challenges, we secured a Lotteries funding grant to undertake a feasibility study of the future options for Marist. That study has been systematically undertaken over the last 15 months or more. We are indebted to Fay Freeman and Brett Turner for their tireless work on this project and I record our grateful thanks for that now. Brett continues to support the club in so many ways. Almost single handed, he oversaw the planning and implementation of the project. The transformation is truly special and he deserves our sincere thanks.

his season sees the retirement of another club stalwart in Willie Harris. Willie has filled several roles over a long period of time, including Club Captain, Board member, team manager and Council of Club delegate to name a few, as well as being a reliable attendee at club functions and working bees. His loyalty, commitment and good humour will be sorely missed. Thank you Willie, and special thanks to Maureen for allowing him to contribute. No end of season would be complete without our sincere thanks to Chrissie and her staff for all their hard work behind the scenes. Finally, I would like to encourage all of our members and supporters to recommend, endorse and patronize wherever possible, all of our sponsors to whom a very special vote of thanks and ap-

preciation is due. Without their support we simply could not function. Marist faces some stern challenges next season and in the years to come. In order to meet them it will need old and new members to make themselves available to support and guide the clubs endeavours as coaches, managers, administrators, fundraisers, sponsors and active members. The key to this is having many people undertaking small jobs. Please think seriously about how you can help and let us know that you are willing to participate. God bless you all. Mark Saunders

he registration goal for this year was 400. With the new registration boards that were notably well positioned and the additional advertising that was done within the local area as well as direct communication with the schools who advertised in their first news letter on our behalf, I thought that we had done enough to get close however, it looks as though the slow recovery from the recession will see this goal been achieved next session. Understanding the strength of any club is its membership, Marist was one of few clubs to increase the junior numbers this season, from 330 in to 2009 to 343 this year. This clearly shows that families are returning back to a club that encourages good old fashioned family focused ethics based on Christian beliefs. Although the numbers were up on last season, due to the decrease in the Rippa Grades and change in middle grade structure, 343 players were spread over 22 Teams (2 down on last year) which was not ideal as some teams had greater numbers which ultimately lead to less time on the field for some players, an aspect of the registration process that will need to be kept in check next season. The Committee that was formed promptly after the AGM last year, quickly showed that they were committed as they first helped to assist me in a full stock take of the junior strip and equipment which uncovered some positive results which led to understanding exactly what we had to offer in the way of equipment and sale items for our upcoming registration days. The first two registration days were fairly slow which I felt a little nervous about however characteristically, this soon changed with 2/3rds of registrations done over the final two days. With the decision made to clear old stock which in turn would free up some much needed revenue, it was pleasing to see all of the 142 bags sold and some 162 jackets through some fairly persuasive selling techniques providing much need additional space in the storage room. Another goal this year was to not only give

nother goal this year was to not only give something back to the players and their families but to create an Club atmosphere that would return the mindset from Marist is a club I play for to Marist is the Club I belong to. With this new initiative in mind, Muster Day had a great turn out with players welcoming old and new team mates and parents alike introducing themselves for another season of early starts and unpredictable weather. The Committee put on a BBQ & drinks in exchange for a donation that raised $398.10 for the Christchurch earthquake relief fund. With the season all but to about to start it was that time of the year again when Marist and Northcote would dispense with the verbal banter and allow our respective teams to have a run against each other to determine who would be the most deserving recipient of the Yeah Right Trophy. As it turns out it was returned back to Northcote for another year however the players and parents alike enjoyed the afternoon/evening notwithstanding the result. In early April, 378 of our players and their families had an opportunity to go to rainbows end under lights thanks to an Auckland wide Marist initiative that joined all the clubs together for one special evening put on just for them. Ordinarily they would not meet until the Pompallier Tournament which unfortunately did not take place this year. A good night was had by all and it was suggested this should become an annual social event for the greater Marist family of Clubs.

Friday night rugby was this year, and I would hope will be every year, an aspect of a young players experience that he will remember for some time to come. Although it seemed that some teams (mine included) had more than their fair share of games under lights, I can assure you that it is merely the luck of the draw as sent to us by the Union at the start of the season however, wherever possible we will look at sharing this experience with all teams next season. Congratulations to Linda Le Quesne who received the Outstanding Contribution Award for her efforts over the years to facilitate Friday night rugby and her service to Junior Rugby though the Junior Committee. After much debate over the purpose and content, the first Marist Junior Times made its way into some 340 inboxes in early May. You will have to agree that Viv Phillips has done an outstanding job with this, providing teams an opportunity to showcase themselves whilst providing informative and timely information on what is going on in the world of rugby in the local area. This is also an educational tool for the younger players as indeed their parents who may want to brush up on the rugby rules or positions that their son will play by and in, in future years. With a newly introduced player levy of $23.50/ player, the Committee set about to put two fundraisers together to raise funds to offset this cost, a cost that will need to be paid this season.

13

hese fundraisers as indeed the ITM Cup initiatives were not well supported for an array of reasons which has left the Committee with some decisions to make with regards to the payment for this year and what can be done to offset it next year. You need to support these fundraisers in order to limit the possibility that this levy will be passed on through increased registration fees. As we all know junior rugby is non competitive (Yeah Right) however, when it comes to Club or Harbour Representative Rugby, political correctness is shown the door and the most deserving show their dominance. At time of writing both the well drilled J3 & J4 Teams will run onto the field tomorrow in an effort to secure their place in the final. Congratulations to Sean Urwin who made the Roller Mills squad, Casey Forsyth and Brandon Marks who made the NH U14 Barbarians Representative Team and lastly congratulations to the J3 Wolves that were presented with the North Harbour Sportsmanship Award for their grade, a truly great achievement. In closing I would to thank my Committee that has played a pivotal role in ensuring that your season went as smoothly as practically possible. Thanks to all the Coaches and Managers and their supporters who have given up their time throughout the season to ensure that our young players have every opportunity to learn and enjoy their chosen sport but lastly I would like to thank our Members whom without, there would be no Junior Section. On that note, I would like to thank everyone that made 2011 a successful year for the Junior Club as I am sure I have missed one or five and wish everyone a safe and relaxing off season and I look forward to seeing you all in 2012 however, before that I look forward to a certain gold cup called Bill back in the cabinet. - Andi Burrell Junior Club Chairman

have to admit coming in to this season I was a little apprehensive over what to expect, more so when I took up the role of manager. I can honestly say I have been pleasantly surprised! The parents of our team have been incredibly supportive with the dads stepping in to help with coaching and refereeing when our coach was away. The improvement all round in our awesome 10 little players has been amazing to watch. Their confidence has grown, their game improved 100 per cent and the team work incredible for such little people! Having two sons playing their first season, I couldnt have asked to have them in a better team! I have thoroughly enjoyed managing the J8 Reds. Also we have been thankful that most weekends the weather has held off raining and we cannot wait for another season of Rippa Rugby. -Taryn Dyer, Manager

e all knew we were up for a bit of an Thanks to all the parents for help and toleradventure when muster day came ance and to the boys for starting every Saturaround and ours was the only team without day on such a positive note. Bryan Kelly a pre-appointed coach or manager. Being the one who walked up and asked Graham where is J8 blue? was enough to gave me the title of manager. Rod stepped up as coach and we were off. The boys have picked up the game at great speed. They sorted out which way the try line was by halfway through game one which was faster than the management. There have been a few stars in the team but they are all shining bright and giving it their best. The progress over the first few games has been so fast that if the Fijians had not stepped up for the Dunedin Test I was going to give Graham a call.

think I can speak for all of the parents and players as well when I say that it has been a great season. We have all learned a lot and are ready to do it all again next year. It is very rewarding to see the boys learning so much about rugby and trying very hard during the games. Our team has come so far since the start of the season, from not knowing which way to run on the field to becoming an organized group working together.

Team work has taught the boys a lot and working hard at accomplishing a common goal will leave our boys with a great feeling of success. Most of all it has been a really fun experience and I know we will all be hanging out for the next season to start! hey say practice makes perfect..the beginning of the season saw the boys running around not too sure what to do and where to run. By the end of the season we had a cohesive unit of skilled boys working as a team. It was great to see during the last few games towards the end of the season their skills have greatly improved with better passing of the ball, lots of rips and an increase in tries scored. The kids have become more passionate as their skills and confidence has grown which I'm sure will bode well for 2012. ur team the J7 Small Blacks started the season on the right note by playing Northcote and discovering where our weaknesses lied. Most players quickly adapted and after learning the rules adjusted well. The players who had never played Rippa before started to make positive moves, run forward, make tries and pull rips. Wed like to thank our parents as well as our Manager Shelly for keeping us in line and our refs Matt and Brent. This has been one of the wettest seasons we have had in a while. With many cancelled trainings and games and all the boys wanted to do was rolling around in the mud! J7 rugby is a tricky level as some of the boys are so ready to tackle and for some of them, it was their first season in rippa.

I have to say that I feel very proud of all of them they have been a great bunch of children and have gelled very well together. - Paul Jensen Coach A thank you also to the parents and family for the side-line support with warming up hands, tying bootlaces and two of our dads for being refs and taking flack from other parents. very successful season as the boys has gone unbeaten throughout the year.

They really have developed into a good bunch of players who, most pleasingly, are playing so well as a team. Each player has contributed in many different ways making watching them every week a real pleasure. Whist the weather and pitch availability has frustrated training nights it has been great to be able to play most weekends and with the introduction of Friday night footy and playing different North Harbour Union Clubs this has been a most enjoyable season.

A special thanks to a great bunch of parents and extended supporters and Michael Morrison for stepping up mid-season to assist with coaching. Coach Steve thank you for all your great work with the boys. You should be very proud with how you have developed them into such a welldisciplined, winning team and given them every opportunity to develop further and enjoy their rugby. e started our first season of tackle rugby

with a large squad of 17 players, who came together from a number of different teams the previous year. For most, the conversion from rippa rugby was easy and for some others it was their first rugby experience. We concentrated on tackling techniques at the beginning of the season and this served us well as the weeks progressed. We have three extremely talented players who have led the team by example and won matches for us with individual heroics on the field. A large number of the other players have really developed their skills, grown in confidence and shown huge determination during matches and commitment at training. By the end of the season we have a core of very competent players, with all round skills. Most of the boys have really improved and contributed extremely well to our success. Some of the others have the ability and will develop more next year. It has been a successful season and our results show 14 wins, 1draw and 4 losses.

A match in the mud against North Shore was very exciting and we did well to score in the last minute to force a draw against very strong opposition. We two nail biters where we scored last to win both matches by one try. The only disappointing game was against Northcote where we were overpowered physically by a much bigger, stronger team. Team spirit has developed well during the season and morale was high all of the time. We enjoyed an end of season function at the Jennerss home which was enjoyed by all. We have received tremendous support from parents and friends. Thank you to Rebecca Smith who spent many hours organizing everything and managing the team. We also thank Campbell Locke and Greg Aldous for their refereeing. The coaching team has thoroughly enjoyed the season and we are proud of the team which has become a solid unit and we look forward to them staying together and developing further in 2012. - Jon Thornhill, Shane Wijohn and Martin Jenner

011 was always going to be a challenge with the introduction of tackle, more players, a bigger field and some new rules. Prior to the start of our first game I must admit I was worried as we have a small team and the physicality aspect was potentially an issue. Our first game against Northcote put the brakes on those thoughts and we had a good win to set the tone for the season.

players to get tries. Conversely Sam and Josh have the luxury of speed so have showed us some good runs for the corner. Our new players Seth, Caylen and Ferg made a great contribution and now very much part of the squad showing some real improvements toward the end of the season. he first year of tackle, scrums, line-outs, backs and forwards for the J6 Wildcats so the year has been a year of learning for the boys. Add this together with 2 new coaches to Marist and it has been a busy year. J6 Wildcats had a squad of 14 boys and enjoyed good player turnout at training and weekends. The boys were very keen to get into the tackle aspect of the game and have enjoyed their season. Although the Wildcats havent won as many games as we should have, only on one occasion were we comprehensively beaten possibly due to the game being a Friday night and the kids were keener for pizza and soft drinks! Unfortunately like most teams, the Wildcats have suffered from lack of training and game time due to inclement weather. However by the end of the season the team has greatly improved and the boys seem to be really enjoying their rugby.

The Wildcats would like to thank our manager Cherie without whom we would never get anything done or organised and our tough but fair referee David Liddlow. We have also had excellent support and help from all our parents, player siblings and grandparents both at training and match days. - Midge Stanger Coach Just a wee note from me to thank our coaches, Midge Stanger and Logan Campbell, who somehow (they are still not sure how it happened) became the coaches of the J6 Wildcats. Myself and our boys parents want to thank you both for taking on the job and for your positive attitudes whilst teaching our boys a whole different game of rugby than they have been used to. t has been a fun filled season for the mighty

Titans with some great wins along the way. The most pleasing result is how the boys have developed as a team. We were lucky this year to have an influx of country boys from Coatesville to bolster the core of the team from last year. The Titans worked hard every Thursday night and the efforts paid off! The catch phrases of tackle, tackle, tackle and not hard enough hit harder wont be forgotten any time soon. Its amazing what a boy will do for a crunchie! James F brought hard running and staunch defence to the backs to compliment the silky skills and awesome distribution of Sam M and Callum. Craig and Liam added nicely to the mix with some real speed and determination out wide. Mat was at his side stepping best and has started to make some big

hits. James H was the Titans top try scorer and his no nonsense approach to the game means he is one to watch for the future. Our monster props Sam J, Rudger and Luc sent shivers into the opposition and competed strongly at the break down all year to get the ball for the flash boys in the backs. Charlie held the scrum together and was impressive with his running from the storm move. Jordon and Ajay improved every game and were great with their straight running around the fringes. The team could count on Euan to make the tackles that counted. SamT played at 100mph every game and is wise enough to be a prop. Lastly, thanks to the great bunch of parents who made coaching the Titans easy. - Tim, Karl and Graeme.

he season for J5 White started with seven boys from last year, now second year tackle, six boys that have moved up from ripper rugby, first year of tackle, and two boys playing rugby for the first time. The new boys fitted into the team well and it was not long before friendships were being formed. As a first time coach the training sessions started a bit slow but with the help of James Iversen I was able to confirm that I was teaching correct technique and organising the training sessions appropriately so that the boys would learn as well as have a bit fun. The results for the season have been a bit lean, 3 wins, 1 draw and 12 losses with 3 games still to play. We have had some very close battles on the field, the closest game being against Mahurangi Black, where the lead changed between the two teams throughout the entire game, Mahurangi took out the game just at final whistle by 1 try.

The boys showed great determination in all games not to give up, even when the score line was starting to expand in the wrong direction. In the last couple of games the boys have started to get to grips with playing as a team and have scored some great team tries, this is great to see. I would like to thank all of the parents for there support of the boys throughout the season, bringing them to trainings and to all of the matchs. Thanks to Michelle and Adrian for stepping in and taking over the managers role. Thanks to James for reffing our home games for us. - Tony Forward

only one cancellation. At muster, way back in March, it was great to see 13 of the J5 Red team back for another year but it was always going to be a big step up to 15-a-side rugby. In addition to the boys from last year it was terrific to see another 9 new eager faces, most of whom were new to rugby and some to New Zealand. So, our coach Paul Brophy, ably assisted by Tyron van Heerden and Nick Rhodes, started to whip the boys into shape with Pauls infamous baptism of fire - twice weekly training sessions, running, running and then some more running, and teaching the new boys all about rugby. This included a preseason game against Northcote which provided the wakeup call the boys needed before the regular season started in early April.

The only blip in the season, was at the half way point, when we went down to ECB Red 4 tries to 2. Hopefully the 10 Raptor boys that form the back bone of the J4 Rep team can get redemption when and if they face ECB's in the upcoming Rep season. The Raptors stats:- - 13 wins, 1 loss, 127 tries for and 17 against. Top try scorers; Ryan Smith 34, Josh Inger 27, Nathan Puppyn 16, Jevon Dry 12 and Matthew Fairbairn 10. t was Muster day when the request came to Coach the J4 Tigers but with lots of support promised Yes was an easy answer. Our first practice went well and with a squad of 21 there were a lot of new names to learn and the challenge of teaching the boys some new rules and the difference when playing with 15 aside and playing on a full field. Our first few games and wins showed we had real speed and a love for the game . However after a few weeks of under performing in the defence area ,we continued to train hard, often in the rain and mud and one thing for sure the boys were enjoying themselves which is always a good achievement at this age. The boys had a few losses but keep trying to win often scoring some good tries. There were some real improvements in the skill level of some of the boys and great to see some of these players making some good runs, tackles and passes later in the season. The highlight of the season was the last game which

through a real team effort saw tries spread across the team. A good way to finish their first year at playing 15 aside, with a taste of the commitment and effort that is needed at this level. Some boys made the J4 Rep team so congratulations to them and also to our team award winners. The J4 Tigers did work best when they played as a team which highlights how Rugby is very much a team sport. I would like to thank my fellow coach Quintin and our fabulous manager Michelle for their help throughout the year. It has been a challenge but in closing I can say the boys should be proud of their year and to be part of Marist Rugby. ight up there with 2010! After a disruptive start to the season we all knew that repeating our success of 2010 was always going to be difficult! Six rounds into the season THE BLUES were 6 from 6 and had racked up a staggering 378 points and a mere 43 against. Our only lapse for the season was against a Rep Like Silverdale team. Our winning run had come to an abrupt end! Although this was definitely a set back, the 'Team Spirit' within 'THE BLUES' only made them train harder to avoid another defeat, and that's exactly what these boys did finishing with a further a 6 from 6 wins. 'THE BLUES' are a Team that should be heralded and held in the highest esteem, not only for the way they play and train, but most importantly for their Team Spirit & Camaraderie. All the Players and Parents/Families alike have created an atmosphere were everyone wants to over achieve. Not win at all costs, but rather, let's work harder than we know our oppositions will be doing. Season Stats: 12 Wins - 1 Loss Points For: 659 (105 Tries) Points Against: 103 Centurion Point Scores: Giles La Ville 104pts (12 tries & 22 conv), Seamus O'Reilly 100pts (2 tries & 45 conv) & Mitchell Reid 100pts (20 tries)

Team Commitment: Squad of 20 Players: 10 Players played all 13 games & 7 Players: 11 / 12 Games. Along the way there has been many contributors to the success of '2011 BLUES' and they should be dually recognised: Our wonderful parents & no.1 supporters, Michelle Ephraims: Team sponsors (Luxottica & budget eyewear), Richard la Ville: our team referee, Sarah Hayman-O'Reilly: team manager. And of course, 'the blues boys': It has been great to see so many of you not only grow in stature but also as Rugby Players and Young Men. Your willingness to go that extra mile is what makes you all truly remarkable. You should ALL be congratulated for you achievements this season. You are an example of where a Great Team will always overcome a Team of Champions. It has been an honour once again to Coach THE BLUES and we look forward to seeing you all again next season. his season again started with a mixture of returning players and new players to rugby. It was soon apparent however that our new players to the team had natural talent and enthusiasm that along with what we knew of our returning players the main aim was to mould them into a team and get them to build on last years successes. For some, it was progressing from playing as an individual to playing with a team focus and for others it was building on their existing skills and grasping their role within the whole team and as always working on their core skills that the boys will continue to develop right through their rugby careers. Overall our season was a 50/50 one we had some great wins but also some disappointing losses. Looking back though the skill level of the team and the individuals has improved tremendously with the majority listening and working hard all year. The forward pack had a great year set up by basic

rugby principles that centred around blowing over the ball and driving through the rucks and mauls. They on several occasions earned us invaluable turnover possession which enabled the backs to get some good clean ball and in turn created some pleasing running rugby. Our back play was at times outstanding but due to several injuries we were unable to compete with any consistency, which was frustrating for the boys, coaches and spectators alike. However, with all disappointments, frustrations and at times lack of players it was very satisfying to see the team win or lose walk off the field with smiles on their faces and with egos intact. We would like to thank all our parents and supporters who stood on the sideline encouraging our boys week in and week out. To Carey for yet again being a fantastic ref and to Helen and Bob for taking on the role of Chief Jerseys washers again. And of course the coaching staff of Phil C, Richie, Rob and Phil H for giving up their free time to coach our boys. Sarah Cuff , Manager

Red started off at the beginning of the season with no coaches and not enough players. But thanks to some dedicated parents namely Brett, Matt and Marc we were ready to kick off. During the season we struggled to gain traction but it didn't dampen the enthusiasm from the players and coaches. Our team was made up of a lot of players that were playing in only their first or second season of rugby. We were very lucky to have a few key players that were seasoned and gelled the team to an extent by showing the way. We had a great start winning our first game up against a well drilled Takapuna side, but from then on out we struggled to find the few wins throughout the season. Our main problem was retention of the ball in the ruck and maul situation, when it comes to forwards, we struggled with the packs that had been together for a few seasons.

It was an area the forwards worked hard at all season and the pack really started to gell but with cancellations and a short season their true potential wasn't able to be realised. We had a dangerous backline that at times showed glimpses of their talent with the ball in hand. From both set piece and broken play, quick hands saw us stretch the defensive lines of the opposition on many occasions. The backs displayed a combination of both pace and stepping skills which was great to watch, however the reward of a few more tries just seemed to elude us in the tough games. Many players put their hand up and executed well on defence and no doubt all will be better for the experience next year. Many thanks to the all the fathers that where there for the practices to help out, and the enthusiasm that all the parents and family showed through the season that kept the team going. t has been a challenging yet rewarding year for the BULLDOGS in that we welcomed new players from 2010 teams as well as a few new players to the game. We have seen the boys grow, not only in stature but also skill, ability and maturity. Although as a group we would have definitely liked to win more games than we did this season, it has been a credit to the boys that their commitment and desire to the final whistle has never been in question. Each and every boy should be proud of what they have achieved as an individual but more importantly to what they have contributed towards the team. Although the season didnt provide a win-loss ratio that accurately defined our achievements, the overall commitment and enthusiasm the boys displayed each and every week at training and on game day should be highly commended. We always fielded good numbers at training and on the day, a testament to not only the boys who looked forward to their twice weekly encounters but also to their parents who got them to their training and games. A testament to the playing potential of our players was the selection of Tyler &

Dean to play J3 Reps and Josh, Ryan, Max H, Matty, Ben P, Zach, Oli, Ben F J & Harry who made the J2 Reps. The presence of family, friends and supporters on the side-lines that turned up each week to support the BULLDOGS provided the boys with a sense of belonging to something more than just another J2 Marist side, this was in part due to our loyal Sponsors that provided each of our boys a Jacket, T-Shirt, Bag & Cap, not too mention the umbrellas that were provided to the families. I would also personally like to thank the Coaches for their dedication and time this season, Viv Phillips for the 100s of photos she took providing the same to the boys on a weekly basis, Nic Padden for the printing of the Top Dog/Guard Dog certificates and all those who volunteered to wash the jerseys and provide oranges for our boys. We say goodbye and good luck to Ben, Zach, Harry, Andrew & Conner who are off to Intermediate next year and again I wish to thank all for what has been a remarkable season in so many ways as we look forward to making our final season of Junior Rugby in 2012, the best yet. nce again the core of players were back with a few new guys thrown in to the mix. The 2011 season can firmly be broken down into 3 parts.

Superb games against top of the table teams in which we played our greatest games, combining every rugby technique we had been taught with natural talent to produce great results. Wonderful games against middle of the table teams - some stronger, some weaker than us in which we played exceptional rugby. Backs and forwards knew what was required of them and carried it out with precision. These games made up the major part of our season. Games against teams we should have beaten but in which we really didnt step up. Fortunately these games were few and far between. The forwards once again led by Marty were aggressive on attack and strong on defence. They charged around the paddock after the ball, securing it, blowing over skilfully and setting it up for the backs or having a go themselves.

The backs led by Kevin mixed it up with quick passing, running into gaps, kicking, chasing and tackling with passion. We are all sad to say we will lose 4 solid members of our team to school rugby at the end of this season. Jayden Johns- combines size, speed and skill to rampage through opposition forward packs. Corban Cantell has great mobility and solid ball skills but is also ready to mix it up in rucks and mauls. Blake Sunde our steady link between the backs and forwards, not afraid to have a go himself or set up play for the backs. Jack Heath Found his niche on the flank has an enormous work rate around the paddock shutting down much bigger opposition players. We will also lose Kevin and Marty. Our heartfelt thanks for all that you have both put into our team over the years. Your expertise, knowledge and ability to share it has ensured a group of boys were moulded into a team - each boy with a bag full of rugby and personal skills to take with them. Our loss is definitely school rugbys gain. - Tracey Iversen,Manager

he J2 Blue team saw a few old players return this season with Nick Holford returning to complete his fifth season. We also added some new members who contributed significantly to the team. This was the first season of playing rugby for a lot of our new boys and it has been impressive to see the growth and development of these players with Oliver and Joshua Lucas securing their full time positions out on the wings and proving themselves by securing a place in the J2 Marist rep side along with Ethan Clark and Sequini. The season started with a hiss and a roar with the boys winning two of the first four games played. They continued to develop basic skills and combined well as a team. As the season progressed however, the team fell into a pattern of leading at halftime but dipping out in the second half. We weren't sure if this was a mental or physical problem but decided the lack of points in the second half was due to a lack of fitness so turned our training sessions up a notch to try and get the

stamina and longevity of the boys fitness up to scratch. After a couple more losses though, it was apparent that the boys were losing heart. However, they continued to train and gave it their all at each game. We saw some amazing game play and tries and commend the boys on their commitment to the team. ous Marist J1, J2, J3 teams and some players from other clubs. J1 being the Senior team in the club means that all the players except three would be playing their last season, so it was important to have fun and enjoy themselves. The team started the season with all forwards so some of the boys stepped up as backs and did a really great job. The Coaches had their work cut out getting the boys to play as a team, however it came together most of the time, albeit in the second half, - if only they could play two second halves!! The boys had their fair share of injuries and team shortages, but they never gave up, pulled together and played with 100% effort at all times. The overall commitment and enthusiasm the boys showed at the two training sessions and the game should be commended. They didnt always win, but each game was a learning curve and they certainly improved as the season progressed. (5 Wins, 8 Loses & 1 draw). J4 Representative Team 2011

arist J4 Reps kicked off the J4 tournament in nail-biting fashion with a 3-0 victory over Takapuna! The tight win meant our J4`s met a Massey team , who had a bye in the first round, in the quarter finals, They were naturally hungry to play and keen to dominate but our forwards were having none of that out, muscling the opposition and letting our captain, Jackson Ephraims, distribute great ball to the backs who outpaced their opposition. It was a tighter second half with only 1 try being scored but the boys were happy with their 40-7 victory. The team also backed up this victory, with all the speedsters from the team, Troy B, Jack S, Josh I, Sean C, Jevon D and Ryan S representing Marist in the J4 Skills relay at Harbour Stadium on 27 Aug. This was part of the ITM Cup Harbour half time entertainment, with a great win defeating all the other J4 rep relay teams.

In preparation for the semi- final against East Coast Bays we upped the pace to three trainings. The boys gave everything in their preparation, so much so, we had another injury losing one of our team mates with a broken finger! Unfortunately it was not to be for Marist this year and ECB's won 35-0. Well done boys, a great Rep Season. Thanks to all the supportive parents, grandparents and family that have allowed you to concentrate on playing your best rugby and organised getting you to all the practices and games and have loudly cheered you on. rying to emulate the feats of the J3 Winning Rep side last season was always going to be difficult and then to draw the much fancied Northcote in the first round was a shock. Throw starting slowly in the game against Northcote, being 5 nil down and things were looking quite grim! Then the Beast arose! Marist started to show the talent that we knew they had. We had worked ourselves back into the game and by half time held a 12-5 lead. Adding a further 2 converted tries, we ended up winning 26-5. Not a convincing win, but we had shown enough for all the Coaches to be a little upbeat.

reaching the final to be played against a very strong Silverdale in Warkworth. As Saturday 3rd Sept loomed, bundles of energy and nerves were abound among the players, coaches and supporters alike! Also game day saw a large contingent of Marist supporters turn up to cheer on our boys. However a strong Silverdale side brought their A game and on the day the better team won. Kudos to our boys for always giving their best and playing like true champs throughout the tournament!

Special thank you to fellow coaches Grant, Peter, Andy and Sarah for her seamless team managing This pitted us against Massey in the Quarter skills. And last but not least a HUGE shout-out Finals. Massey had ranked themselves 4th after a to all our parents,, families and supporters for good win the previous week against Kumeu, and making it such a memorable tournament experia good start to the game was paramount. We did ence. - Darren Ephraims, Coach J3 Reps 2011 just that! Marist looked in top gear and at the half time break held a match winning 33-nil lead. Not letting up in the second half, Marist ran out eventual winners 68-0. A tougher semi-final followed against North Shore ending in a satisfying win of 24 12 thus

It was a disappointing end to the rep tournament for this years J2 team in the quarter-final against old rivals Northcote. But sometimes thats the way it goes. Although J2 lost by a big margin if they take nothing else out of the game, remember how it felt at the end, and to make sure they are never in a position to feel like that again. Also a huge thanks to the parents/carers for their support and as the boys would be nowhere without them and it was a pleasure to be at the games with all. Thanks also to the coaches, James, Kevin and Martin who did a great job, and their commitment to the team was superb.

Finally, well done to all you lads, I for one have been very impressed with the skill levels and quality of rugby you guys can play at. Those of you who are going on to play college footy next year, enjoy yourselves, go hard and do your respective schools proud. Those of you who are staying to play at Marist, I know you will enjoy your final season and produce more good rugby for the club. I look forward to seeing you at prize giving, and over the coming years on the footy fields and around the Shore. - Chris Padden , Manager

adly a tremendous effort by this squad thru the season will be remembered for the final moments of a final. Having developed throughout the season, the team lost the Harbour final to a committed Massey with the final kick of the game and went down 10-11.

Philip Meke who completed a front row that was never beaten. With the Sean Boult at lock and a loose trio that included the powerful Charles Elton at No.8 and Ryan Thompson at 6 the pack was never beaten. Elton was a colossus off the back and the scrum and terrorised defences all over the park whilst Thompson guaranteed ball jumping at 2 in the lineout. Whilst not so experienced, the backline complimented the strong pack and individually Ignacio Costa at 10 and Luke Reed at 12 provided elusiveness and direction for the outsides. Out wide there were good contributions and exMarist junior-boy Ben Hyatt-Brown showed much potential for the future in his first year at this level. This Years new team management was made up of a coaching staff of 2 first fives in there time Brett Craies who took the backs and Jim Thompson who became a forward for the season. The off field manager was teacher Steve Rodkiss. This team did an outstanding job on and off the field. Many thanks must go to the supporters, families and Sponsor Marist NHRFC (supported by the family of 5 Sponsors) in providing an atmosphere that enabled the development of these young men in 2011. The courage and skill of the squad was epitomised 3 days after the final when they took on Moascar Cup holders and Auckland finalists Kelston BHS in the playoffs for the nationals and lost narrowly 17-25 just days after the physical and emotional battles of the final against Massey. With nearly half of this years squad returning, next season once again should see Rossa near the top at the business end of the season in 2012. - Brett Turner

Built around an experienced forward pack containing a number of seasoned campaigners supported by some youthful enthusiasm of first year players, the squad produced some outstanding rugby and went thru the round robin competition unbeaten. In the process, Rosmini had beaten both Massey and Westlake, perennial rivals, twice. However, the closeness of the four games against these rivals indicated that at playoff time tight tussles were guaranteed. Standout contributors throughout the season were Nat Larmer at hooker who showed a penchant for finding the tryline, Tyler Golightly at tight head who was always in the hard stuff and

MARIST PREMIERS
The first half of the season saw us playing 60 minute rugby and then falling away against better sides so the challenge was to increase our fitness base which meant we could compete for longer while making less mistakes. Young players also found their feet half way through the season and started to become true Prems players with the likes of Travis, [toured USA with NZ University Colts], Liam, Ray, Carlin and our French lock JB all becoming integral members of our line up while new players such as Cliff and Orion added some real firepower to forwards and backline. With seasoned veteran Danny Morrison steering the ship in his last playing season, the guys starting playing solid rugby and competing for 80 minutes with the highlight of the year being our victory against Silverdale at their home patch where they were otherwise undefeated for the year. All in all a solid rebuilding year with some very promising talent stepping up to the mark while looking to keep claim of their jerseys for 2012! Go the Saints! - John Beckett

he 2011 Marist Prems team started the year like normal with Jimmy Iverson at the helm and the promise of a number of senior players from 2010 to turn back up and do the Saints proud. That promise of a core base of players changed pretty quickly with for whatever reason a large number of players turning to retirement, leaving the union or being injured meaning it quickly become a season to start rebuilding a core base of players who will see the saints through the next few promising years. With Jimmy having to leave due to work commitments, Blair Urlich & John Beckett stepped into the coaching role for the first time, with Willie Harris & Jo Monkton making up the Premier management team. The season truly had a new feel about it and we set about our work with a great attitude within the team and some challenging but realistic expectations.

he 2011 Senior 1sts were the little

engine that could, but didnt quite. It was always going to be hard to back up the consistent success of the past 5 yrs., with a general rebuild going on in most senior sides [especially the Premiers], a group of Senior 1sts plugging gaps in the Premiers, and some older senior players moving on. Earlier in the season some of our number traveled to Hamilton for the pre-season Marist Spillane Tournament; travel & accommodation funding arrangements were loose, reflected in results which were ordinary with a win v hosts Hamilton being the highlight of the weekend. Then pre-season training turnout was poor in numbers for both senior sides, and the retirement of Pete McDonald for family illness reasons at the start of season, while being totally understandable, didnt help cohesion at the outset. Allan Nicholas, Tony Coughlan & Rob Finch were the management team who stepped into the breach for the season. The season started consistently enough, but that same consistency was our downfall during the season which saw us in a reasonable position after the first round with a 5 win/ 2 loss record at the break, having chalked up wins v Cote,

Massey, Pioneers & Takapuna, the only losses being to ECB & Glenfield. However then the wheels fell off with only 2 wins in the second round v cellar-dwellers Glenfield & Mahurangi, and bonus points for close losses v the likes of Shore, Dale, & ECB [lost to them twice in the second round and three times during the full season], giving us an overall record of 7 wins & 7 losses for the season. The season finished with an ignominious last game default to Massey which gave them free passage to take out the Plate Final from Western Pioneers, both of whom wed beaten during the season. Looking forward to better luck next season!

U21 Season Report 2011

We kicked off the season travelling to Hamilton for the pre-season Spillane Tournament, our side made up of many U19 players from the Champion 2010 side, together with players new to Marist, including a number of college-leavers; we lost our only game to Marist St Pats from Wellington [who eventually won the comp], and left some of the boys to help the Premier side beat hosts Hamilton Marist. Other pre-season battles were waged against good sides such as Counties-Manukau Colts Champions Patumahoe. Head Coach for the season was Sam Ward assisted by Nick Blincoe [both injured during the 2010 Premier season], with James Clarke and Graham Ward managing, physio Dillan Lay & trainer Paul Scutt. Sponsors were Furniture Express-Craig Stephen & Mike Ward- who committed their small but busy company to 2 years sponsorship, Craigs wife Kim and daughters Alexandra & Grace showed up each week in support. We were affected by the fact that the club fielded 8 senior sides, the most in the province; and that 15 Premier players from 2010 were unavailable and Colts had to step up. But notwithstanding this we stitched together a side which was competitive and generally punched above its weight , but let itself down on occasions with basic errors, which are always punished in the very competitive U21 grade. We backed up the Premiers with 9 players during the season, plus Coach Sam who recovered from surgery in

time to complete half a dozen games and get his 50th [blazer]. Despite the fact that we were clearly in the bottom half of the 8 team competition, and were unable to step up for the championship play-offs, we won 2 games in each round, thanks to an outstanding scrum which stood its ground with all other teams, and a defence which at times was outstanding. We lost by some slim margins to top team North Shore [13-21 & 12-13]; and to the 2 sides vying for 4th playoff spot - Massey [6-14] & Takapuna [10-15]. We beat Navy 36-17 in winning the Plate semi , but were unfortunately beaten 24-48 by Massey in the Final. For the future, no fewer than 18 players are eligible for playing in the U21 Grade again in 2012, and 6 of those could play another 2 years! So the squad finished the season in a very upbeat frame of mind, and enoughs been achieved in the reconstruction of the U21 grade this year, following on from the U19 success in 2010, to see the Colts do very well in the short to medium term. Honours for the season go to MVP Sam Cadman; Most Promising Player Johnny Poe; Team Spirit Epeli [Benny] Mataitini; Best Tackler Andras [Junior] Beregi. Big congratulations also to Matt Vellekoop making a NZ University Colts tour to USA, and also the North Harbour U20 side, along with Ray Hutton, Tom Faiva, Ilaisa Loti, & Premier Travis Larsen.

Go the Saints!!!

This year's U19's were a new group, and it was exciting to see a whole new bunch of players at the club. The team also had a new coaching staff: Blair Franklin, Mike Wilson and Rick Wadmore. Numbers for the team weren't really finalised till the week before competition begun and we started pretty slowly. Undoubtedly the highlight of the season was beating Massey in the second round 20-10. That was a day when we had a full strength side and everyone contributed well on the field. Generally, in the second round our results were very competitive and many players showed good improvement. The notable individual contributions were from Valu Tokemoana, Brendan Regan, Byron Berndt (who played every minute of every game!), Kyle Lagerwall, and Thomas Hogg (captain.)

A player said to the writer recently 'we actually have a good team, but some players don't turn up consistently.' That is a pretty good summary of the season which could have been better with a greater level of commitment from certain individuals. Nevertheless, we are hoping to retain and develop these new players for next season, many of whom will be eligible for Under 19's again.

he 2011 rugby season started as one of real promise for the mighty Under 85kg team. With a sprinkling of previous years players and an influx of new talent things looked very promising. There were two pre season games against Teachers-Eastern and Takapuna which produced convincing wins however the teams win in the Under 85s Sevens Tournament was a true season highlight. As is traditional the season was divided into two rounds and the team started the first round strongly and was competitive against many of the traditionally strong teams. The first round gave the team a win against Northcote 14-7. Unfortunately as the round progressed the team suffered injuries and the loss of key team members due to changes in personal circumstances. In the second round of the season the team maintained its competitiveness and suffered some narrow losses. In the last game of the season was a nail biter losing to Takapuna 15-6 with no tries scored in the game.

Whilst the team finished toward the tail end of the table for the season there were many genuine positives to be taken from the season. First was being first Marist team for 2011 to bring home a trophy for the senior club. Secondly with a real focus on discipline and fitness throughout the season penalties conceded were minimized.

Many players had outstanding seasons such as Fraser Langridge, Kane Green (aka Rambo), Ben Crow (aka Gangster), Pete Stirrat, and Mikey Harris plus a special mention to Ray Vincent, Jordan Fincham and Elliott Brinsden (aka Hercules).

fter a fairly unsuccessful 2010 season the Air Force boys from Whenuapai were keen to reestablish themselves as one of the dominant teams in this years Senior 2nd Competition. With players returning to the team from other codes, and with old Northcote stalwart Mark Chadwick hanging up the boots at premier level and taking on a player/coach role within the team, we had the makings of a strong team. Pre-season results were mixed. Encouraging wins were mixed with a 50 point hiding at the hands of the new team on the scene, and club rivals The Spartans. Heading into the first competition game the boys were under no illusion about the season ahead. It would be tough! The season got off to a winning start in May with a solid and satisfying 22-8 victory over Navy. Confidence in each other began to grow, and the results came from there. The first round culminated with a stunning come from behind 27-24 victory over the Spartans, who only weeks earlier had given us a lesson in rugby. As the season wore on, players came and went. This was mainly due to the nature of our jobs in the Air Force, but one thing always remained the same The new found confidence in each other that seemed to be lacking last year. This belief saw us win enough games to finish the regular season in second place. This of course meant a semi final showdown against 3rd place takers

The Spartans. In a close and physically tough game. The Spartans eventually ran out 27-9 victors. As the saying goes Close but no cigar! Still, it doesnt really feel that way. Thanks to the likes of the coach Chaddy, manager Pagey and the other senior players in the team Seano, Pikey, and anyone else with broken body parts, this team is in good stead to take it a step further next year. Thanks to Marist for the support, and thanks to the boys for the awesome season! - Damos

011 has been a great year for the Marist Spartans. 2011 was the first year that the Marist Spartans have played together. Prior to the 2011 season kicking off a group of boys decided it would be a great idea to enter a rugby team with all their friends. The first mission was to bring all the players together, the second to find the funds and third to find a club. Finding the players proved easy enough as many for keen to play with their mates. Players ranging from at least five of the clubs across the Harbour Competition and many coming from further afield just to play. Almost as easily a sponsor was found who was willing to fund the beginning of the team. Thirdly and most important was the club. Marist at Albany rose to the occasion magnificently. After the initial approach the club was quick to take us aboard and more importantly made us feel a part of the club, and thus our season as the Marist Spartans began. Going into the season unsure of how we would compare to the other teams, the Spartans were quick to notch up two huge wins and confidence

was at a high. As the season progressed we suffered front row player injuries which certainly narrowed the game margins. get back on top of the other teams and finished a strong third in the regular season.

With our confidence and motivation brimming we took to the finals with a fierce passion to win, and thats just what we did. Taking the semi from the Air force team the Spartans progressed to the final. Having never beaten North Shore this was to be a huge task. We entered the game expecting to lead from the start. With a quick try in the first 5 minutes the Spartans never looked back and finished the game 22 -17 and the Championship in the bag! The Bluebellies started the season with a difference a team trip to Wellington to take in the Wellington sevens during the first weekend of February. What a great event a must do once in your life for any rugby follower you can even take in the odd game. Once over the effects of the trip to wellington and again in a break with tradition and long held policy it was decided to try this training thing. Good numbers at training saw some committed and structured secessions capably led by that hard task master Archie. Thanks for your efforts Archie while the results werent quite there to start with and after some very close first up games a flurry at the end of the season saw some great wins I mean draws. Everyone is looking forward to the end of season trip to Hamilton and again with a break in tradition we will actually be playing

a game or two then taking in the Final pool game of the world cup. Jim Dickie Our original Bluebelly!.....Rob Sheehan. Also affectionately known as Robbo he has played about a million games for the club`s Bluebellies, is a proud granddad and still loves playing the game with heart and passion!
