Introduction: Airline Business is a very important part in Hotel and Tourism management. It is
intimately related to the travel industry. As a student of Tourism and Hotel Management I have done this course under Mr. Ahsan Ullah. Under his experienced touch I have learned the basic operations of Airlines and Travel agencies and other important features about them. To learn better Mr. Ahsan Ullah has given us to prepare an assignment to make a field visit in any IATA authorized travel agency or foreign airline in Bangladesh and submit a report about the operating

procedure of that travel agency or the Airline. I have visited some renowned travel assignment and foreign airlines in Dhaka and selected Saudi Arabian Airlines as the subject of my assignment. I have tried to collect as much information of Saudi Arabian Airlines and their management policies in Bangladesh. Here is a brief description:-

Saudi Arabian Airlines

Saudi Arabian Airlines is the national carrier of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, being the largest in the Middle-East and one of the largest in the world. The reputation which the Airline has build-up for its services & hospitality became an inspiration for others. The airline's main operational base is at Jeddah-King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED). Other major hubs are Riyadh-King Khalid International Airport (RUH), and DammamKing Fahd International Airport (DMM). Saudi Arabian Airlines is a member of the Arab Air Carriers Organization. Saudia's wide range of new fleet and innovative customer services are designed to enhance comfort and convenience. The airline serves 47 international destinations and domestic spanning four continents, backed up with new fleet which is most technologically advanced in service anywhere in the world enabling us to carry over 15 million passengers. Every year Saudia Carries over 200 million kilograms of cargo world-wide, which is more than any other airlines in the Middle-East. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh was linked by Saudia-by Air, on 04 April 1980 with twice weekly super DC-8 flights. Not long after the beginning, it was found the available capacity on the new route was not enough. So, in 1982 the frequency remaining the same the equipment was upgraded to wide-body Tristar L-1011. In couple of years time the capacity proved further inadequate. In 1985, the equipment was again up-graded, this time to Jumbo B747. The constant growth of traffic between the two brotherly countries-Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh kept growing at a healthy pace and accordingly to further augment the capacity additional weekly flights were introduced from time to time. By the year 1998, Saudia in Dhaka was operating on a daily basis. Currently and keeping in line with the constant traffic growth, SV is operating 11 passenger flights a week all by B747 to/from Dhaka and KSA. Apart from the scheduled services, during almost all Haj seasons in the past, the airline has operated a large number of extra flights to transport pilgrims from Bangladesh. Saudia has done exceptionally well in Cargo Operation in Bangladesh as well. From July 2003, the airline has launched its once a week freighter service from Dhaka to Brussels via Riyadh. This service goes up to twice a week in line with market requirement. This service has been very widely welcomed by the Bangladeshi exporters and freight forwarders which in turn assisting the Bangladeshi exporters in keeping their export commitments. In 2006 Saudi Airlines began the process, dividing itself into Strategic Business Units (SBU); the catering unit was the first to be privatized. Saudi Arabian Airline has codeshare agreements with the following airlines (as of June 2010): Ethiopian Airlines;

Gulf Air Kuwait Airways Mahan Air

IATA (International Air Transport Association): Saudi Arabian Airlines became a member of IATA on 17.04.1967, which actively contributes to its efforts in bringing up the uniform rules and regulations to ensure quality in Air Transportation. Rules & Regulations: Rules and regulations governing carriage by air Warsaw Convention / Hague Protocol: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia having recognized the advantage of regulating in a uniform manner, the conditions of international transportation by air in respect of the documents used for such transportation and of the liability of the carrier, ratified the Warsaw Convention (1929) and the Hague Protocol (1955), on 27.01.1969, the article of which are the governing laws for the contracts for international carriage (of passengers, cargo and baggage) by air. Saudi Arabian Airlines endorses the action program adopted by the IATA legal committee and cooperates to the maximum feasible extent in achieving its objectives of modernization of the Warsaw System, for the purpose of unification of laws to meet the global developments.

Reservation system: It is a computerized reservation system by which an airline seat, rental

cars and a hotel room can be booked. Amadeus, Galileo, Sabre, Worldspan are some top most reservation software used by many airlines, hotels & car rental firms. Recently Saudi Arabian Airlines has successfully migrated to the Reservation and Inventory modules of its next-generation Alta Customer Management System (CMS) and core components of the Amadeus e-Commerce suite. For this reason the airline has already registered a significant increase in bookings with online sales now representing over 20 per cent of total bookings which shows a healthy growth on previous figures. Muhammad Albakri, Vice President IT, Saudi Arabian Airlines commented: The joint Saudi Arabian Airlines and Amadeus team worked tirelessly to ensure the migration was completed successfully. The new systems provide a completely new, fully integrated IT architecture to run our operations. We are able to radically improve our web presence and drive increased international growth. Following these migrations we can now deliver on our commitment to transform the traveler experience. The migration marks a major milestone for Saudi Arabian Airlines. During cutover 3.2million tickets, 1.3million Passenger Name Records (PNRs) and 1.3million frequent flyer profiles were moved to the new system. The Amadeus Reservation Desktop application was installed on over 3,000 PCs at over 500 office locations worldwide and over 3,800 employees were trained on the new applications and processes. In addition, a large scale integration programme was undertaken to link Saudi Arabian Airlines new systems to its other applications as well as to over 70 airline partners for eTicketing.
