Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while must have been chosen for this summer season by a committee eager for a vacation. For the apostles, the promise of rest was foiled by the needs of the people who discovered their hideaway and pressed them into ministry. Some people do indeed use their vacation for ministry and mission, giving an intensity of service otherwise not possible. For most of us, vacation is a time when we can grow more aware of Gods plan, and can renew the bonds of love with family and friends in times of play and leisure. The disciples learn today that there is no place so out of the way that the life of worship and ministry is disengaged. Giving yourself to summer worship will enrich you, delight you, and give you a sense of the word of Gods progress in your heart. In todays world, summer is the time when we are most acutely aware of the beauty of the world. Gratitude and wonder are fertile soils for Gods word to take root and prosper. Welcome the visitor today, and resolve that when you travel, you will be faithful to Sunday worship.

Year of Faith
This October is the beginning of what Pope Benedict XVI has declared a Year of Faith. The Year of Faith is an opportunity for Catholics to experience a conversion to turn back to Jesus and enter into a deeper relationship with him. At baptism, the door of faith is opened, but during this year Catholics are called to open it again, walk through it and rediscover and renew their relationship with Christ and his Church. Every baptized Catholic is called through baptism to be a disciple of Christ and proclaim the Gospel. The Year of Faith is an opportunity for each and every Catholic to renew their baptismal call by living out the everyday moments of their lives with faith, hope and love. This everyday witness is necessary for proclaiming the Gospel to family, friends, neighbors and society. In order to witness to the Gospel, Catholics must be strengthened through celebrating weekly Sunday Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. USCCB The natural flow from understanding what God has done for us is to ask, What can I do for God? Once strengthened by the Eucharist, giving back to God is a rhythm. As I renew my relationship with Christ, I become disposed to serve Him. The more I serve Him, the more my relationship is strengthened and I want to be at the Eucharistic table. As I receive, I give, as I give, I receive. During this Year of Faith, Christ the King Parish will have ample opportunities for you to rediscover and renew your relationship with Christ. There will be many opportunities to serve the Lord. Our whole parish, in union with Catholics around the world, will begin the Year of Faith on October 7, 2012 with a Festival of Faith. The next planning meeting is on Monday, July 30th at 7:00 pm in the parish life center. For more information please contact Kate Uhart, Festival Chair through email at rickuhart@aol.com. Yours in Christ, Eileen Maggiore, Pastoral Associate

Do - Re - Mi Its not too early to start thinking about the new Choir Season
September is around the corner. I know we dont want to think about it yet, but we all know how quickly the seasons pass. With Labor Day comes the start of CTKs Choral season and all parishioners are invited to participate in one or more of the many music ministries. The Kings Choir: This choir is open to all parishioners high-school aged and older. No previous musical experience is necessary. The only prerequisite is that you enjoy singing. The Kings Choir rehearses on Wednesdays, beginning September 5, from 7:00pm-9:00pm in the church. Advanced registration is required to ensure enough music is purchased. Teen Ensemble: Our Teen Ensemble is for all teenaged parishioners who play an instrument and/or sing. Instrumentalists should, at minimum, be able to play melodies out of the music issue. More advanced music is available to those musicians who are further in their studies. The Teen Ensemble only rehearses one Sunday morning per month prior to the mass they are playing/singing at. Music is given the previous month, and the student must practice on his/her own. Childrens Choir: Our Childrens Choir has grown tremendously over the past few years. This year, we will have separate rehearsals for singers and instrumentalists, but they will be together on Sunday. The Childrens Choir rehearses weekly, and attendance is mandatory. The choir sings at mass once per month. Childrens Orchestra: Last year, we were combined with the Childrens Choir, and although we will still be at mass together, we will rehearse separately. The Childrens Orchestra rehearses weekly, and attendance is mandatory. The orchestra plays at mass once per month. Cantors: Cantors are the brave souls who lead us in song each week. Although formal musical education is not required, an understanding of music and natural talent is. Christ the King invites parishioners of all ages to become a cantor. You will begin as an intern, working with a current cantor to help raise your confidence (and calm your nerves!) Anyone interested in any of the above music ministries is asked to contact our Music Director, Bill Runge, at 630-396-6075, or email him at bill@ctklombard.org.
"A wide spectrum of issues touches on the protection of human life and the promotion of human dignity. As Pope John Paul II has reminded us: "Where life is involved, the service of charity must be profoundly consistent. It cannot tolerate bias and discrimination, for human life is sacred and inviolable at every stage and in every situation; it is an indivisible good" (The Gospel of Life, no. 87). "Among important issues involving the dignity of human life with which the Church is concerned, abortion necessarily plays a central role. Abortion, the direct killing of an innocent human being, is always gravely immoral (The Gospel of Life, no. 57); its victims are the most vulnerable and defenseless members of the human family. It is imperative that those who are called to serve the least among us give urgent attention and priority to this issue of justice (2001: US Bishops Pastoral Plan for Prolife Activities: A Campaign in Support of Life). The first reading and the Gospel passage echo the theme of God as our Shepherd. It is in the Second Reading that we see exactly how Christ shepherds us through the reconciliation achieved in his blood. He shepherds us not simply by teaching us, but by destroying the very power of death. The Churchs pro-life efforts are to be seen and presented in this context, that is, as an aspect of the reconciliation of the world with God in Christ. The enmity of which St. Paul speaks has many dimensions, and in its widest spiritual sense includes the enmity that all sin places between us and God, and between us and one another. The exaltation of individual choice above our responsibilities to the lives of others, especially our children, creates a destructive enmity. The peace that Christ gives is not something to be received only in an internal, spiritual way, but is a reality that transforms relationships, cultures, and nations. That peace demands respect for life and a rejection of the enmity that constitutes the culture of death. Priests for Life

Faith Formation Commission The purpose of the Faith Formation Commission is to provide opportunities to learn, experience and grow in faith by uniting every household into the parish community through study, Eucharist, service, Generations of Faith, religious education for all ages and an Early Learning Academy, in order to more fully participate in the Sacraments and in the greater faith community after the model of Christ the Teacher. The ministries within the Faith Formation Commission are described as follows: Adult Spiritual Formation: The mission of this ministry is to: promote growth in the understanding and practice of the Catholic faith; present material that merges faith with daily life; promote formation and information opportunities in the Parish and in our local area. Baptismal Preparation: Parishioners involved in this ministry will help to: educate, inform and support parents or guardians seeking Baptism for their child(ren); to prepare and welcome the child to the Parish family; and to welcome parents to their new role. Bible Study: Parish Bible Study is a gathering of adults who are interested in gaining and sharing a better understanding of Scriptures using approved study guides and the Bible. These provide basic material at an understandable Catholic level. These materials give us historical and current perspectives of the books of the Bible. The Parish Bible Study is appropriate for the novice and intermediate. Break Open the Word: A Bible study group that meets every Thursday Morning (10:A.M.) at the East Room. The meeting is open to all, CTK parishioners & non-parishioners. It is designed to offer the attendees a clearer insight about the readings, the psalms, and the Gospel for the following Sundays. Your insights about the readings are welcome. Childrens Liturgy of the Word: Adult members of our Parish explore ways to enable the participation of young children at liturgy. The committee recruits and trains small group leaders for the Childrens Liturgy of the Word to facilitate understanding of the scripture for children. Deaf Ministry: Arranges for signing for parishioners at parish events who are deaf and hard of hearing. Early Learning Academy: We, the parents and faculty of the Early Learning Academy, form an educational ministry of Christ the King Parish. Our students grow in self-confidence, socialization, awareness of the world and respect for others in a Christ-centered environment. We want our students to learn how to be Christ-like and come to develop a relationship with Jesus. Jesus places His Father at the center of His life and invites us to the same. With an emphasis on worship and service, and a strong core curriculum, we are confident that the foundation we build will indeed last a lifetime. Evangelization Outreach: Opportunities for parishioners to participate in evangelization programs such as Alpha and parish missions are planned through this ministry. Generations of Faith: This ministry outreaches to households of all ages to provide catechesis, prayer and evangelization on a variety of topics. Households come together for a meal, faith sharing and enrichment activities several times per year. Materials are given to households at the end of the session to continue their discussions at home. Marriage Preparation: The mission of this outreach is to prepare engaged couples for a life together in love. The focus is on communication skills, expectations, dealing with differences, family and friends, sexuality, and faith. In addition the goals are to: encourage couples to cope with everyday situations and remain strong and loving in their commitment to each other; raise awareness of the triune partnership of husband, wife and God; and to provide experiences where couples can share their journey with others in our Parish. A wedding coordinator assists the Priest, bride and groom, and their families in the final stage of preparing for the Sacrament of Marriage. The ministry begins one to two weeks before the wedding and continues on the day of the wedding to ensure a smooth ceremony or Mass. Religious Education for Children: The mission of our religious education program is to provide settings in which the youth of the Parish are instructed in faith and doctrine through the witness and teaching of competent catechists, using an integrated scope and sequence of materials and activities appropriate for each age and level of development. In addition, the mission of this ministry is to: assist parents in their role as the childs primary educator and prepare children for the reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.): The purpose is to provide an introduction to the Catholic Church and preparation for reception into the Church for those coming from other or no faith experiences. RCIA also prepares Catholic adults for full membership by preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation and to provide an updating for Catholics wishing to know more about their faith. Youth Ministries: The purpose is to provide opportunities for young parishioners to learn and share what it means to be a Catholic in their environment. To enable the Junior High and High School students to make informed moral decisions. This Commission is headed by Judy Knox and includes commission members: Michele Schmitt, Don Knox, Joyce Ringhoffer and Aresenio Alonza. This is a ministry that obviously can use more parish volunteers and would welcome an opportunity to speak to anyone interested in serving this Commission. For more information or to volunteer to serve on any of these ministries, please contact Commission Chair Judy Knox at knox.d@sbcglobal.net or call the parish rectory.
