Behavioural objectives: By the end of the lesson, the pupils will be able to: a) Invite, offer, accept and decline an invitation in a polite way. b) Fill in gaps with appropriate phrases in the dialogue shell. c) Role-play an extended invitation/offer scene in front of the class creatively. Teaching aids : A blackboard, chalks, mahjong papers, markers, a dialogue script, a dialogue shell, a worksheet, a pack of jelly beans, a pocket chart, sentence cards. : Would, please : To accept and decline an invitation & an offer. : Questions and responses.
Pupils Previous Knowledge: Pupils have learnt positive and negative statements in Year 4.
Steps/Time
Teacher/Pupils Activities Teacher asks pupils if they have been invited to any occasions such as a birthday party or breakfast/lunch/tea time/dinner treat and what foods are offered to them in those occasions. Teacher divides pupils into 5 groups. Pupils have to write 5 types of food offered in the specific occasions given on the mahjong paper. Teacher distributes a dialogue about an invitation to lunch. Teacher asks the pupils to read silently and tell what the conversation is all about. Teacher explains the function of - Would you like.? - Please have. - Please come in the dialogue. (to invite and to offer food/drinks) Teacher shows examples of accepting and declining the invitation and offer by using sentence cards. e.g. Yes, I would love to. (to accept) Yes, please. (to accept) Im sorry, I cant. Ive just had supper. (give reason) (to decline) No, thank you. (to decline) Teacher repeats the target dialogue chorally and individually. Target structure: Would you like? T : Would you like a sandwich? All pupils: Would you like a sandwich? T : A cup of tea All pupils: Would you like a cup of tea? (choral drill)

Mechanical drill
T : Minah. Roti canai. Minah : Would you like roti canai? T : Raju. A piece of cake. Raju : Would you like a piece of cake? (individual drill) Teacher does the same activity to other expressions such as Please come to my birthday party, Please come to my house, Please have a drink, Please have some biscuits etc. Teacher introduces pupils the expressions of accepting and declining after Would you like question in order to respond to the invitation/offer in a polite way. T : Would you like a piece of cake? Pupils: Would you like a piece of cake? T : Yes, I would love to. T : No, thank you. Teacher asks the pupils to work in pairs. Teacher gives a comic strip. Working in pairs, pupils fill in the speech bubbles with appropriate expressions. Teacher puts up a model dialogue on the blackboard. Pupils fill in gaps with appropriate information and practice in pairs. Teacher checks and corrects the pronunciation of the pupils while they are practicing the language expressions. Teacher asks a pair of pupils to emerge with another pairs to produce extended dialogue. Pupils role play the new extended dialogue in front of the class. Teacher highlights the social expressions taught in the lesson and moral values that the pupils get from the activities. e.g. A pack of jelly beans A worksheet Consolidation
Closure (3 min.)
Teacher offers pupils a pack of jelly beans. Pupils respond by using either accept or decline expressions in a polite way. e.g. Would you like some jelly beans? Yes, I would love to. No, thank you. Teacher gives worksheet to be completed at home.
