It is within a changing context that compels an individual to accept inevitable change no matter what the consequences bring.

Two very different people from two very different places, express their feeling of the inevitability of change. Robert Gray, Australian poet who wrote during the late 20th century (1960s-1970s) and Chinua Achebe, Nigerian novelist who wrote at a similar time frame 1958-1964. Both composers express their fear of change and the consequences that come enclosed with it. Robert Gray wrote during the time when the green movement was strong and popular. People during the time valued what the natural environment had to offer. Similar to Robert Gray, Achebe wrote when colonisation was occurring in parts across Africa. He was highly influenced by his sister who told him fascinating stories that broadened his world, and by his father who was a missionary. Robert Grays Late Ferry, North Coast Town and Diptych and Chinua Achebes Things Fall Apart all follow the same concept. The personas in both text types present colonisation and urbanisation as a threat because of their genuine acquaintance with nature. Achebes Things Fall Apart is refreshing and written by a native. Speculations dictate that he is a biased writer. Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness is the biased text as the Europeans are talking about Africans. But with Things Fall Apart, there is a balanced look at Nigeria and African society. It revolves around realistic happenings such as the ghastly rituals that take place across Africa. It offers two sides to each point of view as it shows how Nigeria was forced to change due to the missionaries. The novel Things Fall Apart expresses a persona that doesnt want to leave nature, but love nature. This is seen through the fear that colonisation brings. The persona utilises repetition of words like settled and every which emphasises the presence of locusts (white settlers). This emphasises that the white settlers were out to change the Ibo society and get rid of it. In the same way, poem North Coast Town depicts a persona who respects nature and displays dislike in the change towards Americanism and urbanisation. This is seen in stanza six becoming chrome, is demonstrating how the place is becoming a mirror and carbon copy of America. In stanza three floury apple and palm frond scrape dryly arouses and colourless and melancholic feeling. It reveals that the town has nothing to offer and symbolises alienation. The persona values nature more than the flashy changes that are being made. Change due to the occurrence of modernisation in nature has enabled there to be more changes in the environment. In poem Late Ferry attention is drawn to the poets association with the natural environment. He accepts the changes made in modernisation. Expressive language huge dark harbour and the narrow wood jetty shows that the harbour is enormous and poses a threat to the untouched environment. The phrase dark denotes isolation. The use of simile streets lights fluorescence over the dark water, a ceaseless activity, like chromosomes uniting and dividing emphasises that this image is endless and unpredictable. This comparison implies the narrators admiration to nature and the environment thus provoking the readers imagination. Hence, the message received is that material objects arent as important as nature itself. Whereas in Things Fall Apart the persona represented is one that isnt too happy with the changes that colonisation brings. Nature is seen as the key to life. What will the heathen say of us when they hear that we receive osu into our midst? demonstrates that when a person is dedicated to a god or one set thing, it becomes taboo. This in relation to change shows that if changing beliefs in the Ibo society is taboo, what will changing the way of life the natural way bring? It shows how change can impact on nature and thus threatening the peace of the land. Symbolism of the egwugwu represents culture

and independence of Umuofia. They are seen as the ancestral gods although they are masked elders. When the egwugwu lose power in the community, and are replaced by a white court, the tribes culture and independence are lost. Both text types show how much the two personas value nature. In Diptych, a flashback and reflection is shown as to how the persona cherished certain moments in his life. It represents how the changes in urbanisation bring fear and what the city life may bring. A warm feeling aroused within the reader sets the reflective and nostalgic tone. The poem shows the changing values as the world moves onto new ideas and technology changes. QUOTEEE.........
