(emtricitabine, rilpivirine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) Tablets
Important: Ask your doctor or pharmacist about medicines that should not be
taken with COMPLERA. For more information, see the section What should I tell my
healthcare provider before taking COMPLERA?
Read this Patient Information before you start taking COMPLERA and each time you
get a rell. There may be new information. This information does not take the place of
talking to your healthcare provider about your medical condition or treatment.
What is the most important information I should know about COMPLERA?
COMPLERA can cause serious side effects, including:
1. Build-up of an acid in your blood (lactic acidosis). Lactic acidosis can happen in
some people who take COMPLERA or similar (nucleoside analogs) medicines. Lactic
acidosis is a serious medical emergency that can lead to death.
Lactic acidosis can be hard to identify early, because the symptoms could seem like
symptoms of other health problems. Call your healthcare provider right away if you
get any of the following symptoms which could be signs of lactic acidosis:
s feeling very weak or tired
s have unusual (not normal) muscle pain
s have trouble breathing
s have stomach pain with
- nausea (feel sick to your stomach)
- vomiting
s feel cold, especially in your arms and legs
s feel dizzy or lightheaded
s have a fast or irregular heartbeat
2. Severe liver problems. Severe liver problems can happen in people who take
COMPLERA or similar medicines. In some cases these liver problems can lead to death.
Your liver may become large (hepatomegaly) and you may develop fat in your liver
(steatosis) when you take COMPLERA.
Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms
of liver problems:
s your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice).
s dark tea-colored urine
s light-colored bowel movements (stools)
s loss of appetite for several days or longer
s nausea
s stomach pain
You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or severe liver problems if you are
female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking COMPLERA or a similar
medicine containing nucleoside analogs for a long time.
3. Worsening of Hepatitis B infection. If you also have hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection
and you stop taking COMPLERA, your HBV infection may become worse (are-up). A
are-up is when your HBV infection suddenly returns in a worse way than before.
COMPLERA is not approved for the treatment of HBV, so you must discuss your HBV
therapy with your healthcare provider.
s Do not let your COMPLERA run out. Rell your prescription or talk to your healthcare
provider before your COMPLERA is all gone.
s Do not stop taking COMPLERA without rst talking to your healthcare provider.
s If you stop taking COMPLERA, your healthcare provider will need to check your health
often and do regular blood tests to check your HBV infection. Tell your healthcare
provider about any new or unusual symptoms you may have after you stop taking
COMPLERA.
What is COMPLERA?
COMPLERA is a prescription HIV (Human Immunodeciency Virus) medicine that:
s is used to treat HIV-1 in adults who have never taken HIV medicines before. HIV is the
virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immunodeciency Syndrome).
s contains 3 medicines, (rilpivirine, emtricitabine, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate)
combined in one tablet. EMTRIVA and VIREAD are HIV-1 (human immunodeciency
virus) nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and EDURANT is an
HIV-1 non-nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI).
It is not known if COMPLERA is safe and effective in children under the age of 18 years.
COMPLERA may help:
s Reduce the amount of HIV in your blood. This is called your viral load.
s Increase the number of white blood cells called CD4+ (T) cells that help ght off
other infections.
Reducing the amount of HIV and increasing the CD4+ (T) cell count may improve your
immune system. This may reduce your risk of death or infections that can happen when
your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections).
COMPLERA does not cure HIV infections or AIDS.
s Always practice safer sex.
s Use latex or polyurethane condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with any
body uids such as semen, vaginal secretions, or blood.
s Never re-use or share needles.
Ask your healthcare provider if you have any questions about how to prevent passing
HIV to other people.
Who should not take COMPLERA?
s Do not take COMPLERA if your HIV infection has been previously treated with
HIV medicines.
s Do not take COMPLERA if you are taking certain other medicines. For more
information about medicines that must not be taken with COMPLERA, see What
should I tell my healthcare provider before taking COMPLERA?
What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking COMPLERA?
Before you take COMPLERA, tell your healthcare provider if you:
s have liver problems, including hepatitis B or C virus infection
s have kidney problems
s have ever had a mental health problem
s have bone problems
s are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if COMPLERA can harm
your unborn child
Pregnancy Registry. There is a pregnancy registry for women who take antiviral
medicines during pregnancy. Its purpose is to collect information about the health
of you and your baby. Talk to your healthcare provider about how you can take part
in this registry.
s are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed. The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention recommends that mothers with HIV not breastfeed because they can pass
the HIV through their milk to the baby. It is not known if COMPLERA can pass through
your breast milk and harm your baby. Talk to your healthcare provider about the best
way to feed your baby.
Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription
and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
COMPLERA may affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines may
affect how COMPLERA works, and may cause serious side effects. If you take certain
medicines with COMPLERA, the amount of COMPLERA in your body may be too low and
it may not work to help control your HIV infection. The HIV virus in your body may become
resistant to COMPLERA or other HIV medicines that are like it.
Do not take COMPLERA if you also take these medicines:
s COMPLERA provides a complete treatment for HIV infection. Do not take other HIV
medicines with COMPLERA.
s the anti-seizure medicines carbamazepine (CARBATROL
, EQUETRO
, TEGRETOL
,
TEGRETOL-XR

,
EPIVIR
or EPIVIR-HBV
, EPZICOM
, TRIZIVIR
)
s rilpivirine (EDURANT
)
s adefovir (HEPSERA
)
Also tell your healthcare provider if you take:
s an antacid medicine that contains aluminum, magnesium hydroxide, or calcium
carbonate. Take antacids at least 2 hours before or at least 4 hours after you take
COMPLERA.
s a histamine-2 blocker medicine, including famotidine (PEPCID
), cimetidine

Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you are not sure if your medicine is
one that is listed above.
Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of your medicines and show it to your
healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. Your healthcare
provider and your pharmacist can tell you if you can take these medicines with
COMPLERA. Do not start any new medicines while you are taking COMPLERA without
rst talking with your healthcare provider or pharmacist. You can ask your healthcare
provider or pharmacist for a list of medicines that can interact with COMPLERA.
How should I take COMPLERA?
s Stay under the care of your healthcare provider during treatment with COMPLERA.
s Take COMPLERA exactly as your healthcare provider tells you to take it.
s Always take COMPLERA with a meal. Taking COMPLERA with a meal is important
to help get the right amount of medicine in your body. A protein drink does not
replace a meal.
s Do not change your dose or stop taking COMPLERA without rst talking with your
healthcare provider. See your healthcare provider regularly while taking COMPLERA.
s If you miss a dose of COMPLERA within 12 hours of the time you usually take it, take
your dose of COMPLERA with a meal as soon as possible. Then, take your next dose
of COMPLERA at the regularly scheduled time. If you miss a dose of COMPLERA by
more than 12 hours of the time you usually take it, wait and then take the next dose
of COMPLERA at the regularly scheduled time.
s Do not take more than your prescribed dose to make up for a missed dose.
s When your COMPLERA supply starts to run low, get more from your healthcare provider
or pharmacy. It is very important not to run out of COMPLERA. The amount of virus in
your blood may increase if the medicine is stopped for even a short time.
s If you take too much COMPLERA, contact your local poison control center or go to the
nearest hospital emergency room right away.
What are the possible side effects of COMPLERA?
COMPLERA may cause the following serious side effects, including:
s See What is the most important information I should know about COMPLERA?
s New or worse kidney problems can happen in some people who take COMPLERA.
If you have had kidney problems in the past or take other medicines that can cause
kidney problems, your healthcare provider may need to do blood tests to check your
kidneys during your treatment with COMPLERA.
s Depression or mood changes. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have
any of the following symptoms:
- feeling sad or hopeless
- feeling anxious or restless
- have thoughts of hurting yourself (suicide) or have tried to hurt yourself
s Bone problems can happen in some people who take COMPLERA. Bone problems
include bone pain, softening or thinning (which may lead to fractures). Your
healthcare provider may need to do additional tests to check your bones.
s Changes in body fat can happen in people taking HIV medicine. These changes may
include increased amount of fat in the upper back and neck (buffalo hump), breast,
and around the main part of your body (trunk). Loss of fat from the legs, arms and
face may also happen. The cause and long term health effect of these conditions are
not known.
s Changes in your immune system (Immune Reconstitution Syndrome) can happen
when you start taking HIV medicines. Your immune system may get stronger
and begin to ght infections that have been hidden in your body for a long time.

Patient Information
COMPLERA
(kom-PLEH-rah)

These changes may
include increased amount of fat in the upper back and neck (buffalo hump), breast,

blueprint to confront the global AIDS
epidemic and realize her previously stated
vision of an AIDS-free generation.
Clinton said she directed U.S. Global
AIDS Coordinator Eric Goosby to develop
the plan and said it would be unveiled
before Dec. 1 on World AIDS Day.
I have asked Ambassador Dr. Goosby
to take the lead on developing and sharing
our blueprint of the goals and objectives
for the next phase of our effort and to
release this blueprint by World AIDS Day
this year, Clinton said. We want the
next Congress, the next secretary of state,
and all of our partners here at home and
around the world to have a clear picture of
everything weve learned and a roadmap
that shows what we will contribute to
achieving an AIDS-free generation.
Clinton rst articulated the idea of an
AIDS-free generation during remarks
she delivered on World AIDS Day last year.
A number of HIV/AIDS advocates
praised the idea of a blueprint in the
global ght against HIV/AIDS as they
called for the strategy to include certain
enumerated provisions.
Chris Collins, vice president of policy for
amFAR, said hes hoping the plan would
articulate the way forward in confronting the
global AIDS epidemic, which has claimed the
lives of more than 25 million across the globe.
When you want to accomplish a complex
goal you need a clear plan of action,
Collins said. Creation of a blueprint is an
important step forward because it directs
our planning, policy and funding toward
achieving clear outcomes and goals and will
help everyone engaged monitor progress
toward an AIDS-free generation.
In a joint statement, 65 advocacy and
implementation organizations said the
blueprint needs to contain several key
points to succeed, such as dening
specic outcome targets for HIV incidence,
morbidity and mortality; requiring
full transparency of U.S. government
budgets; and requiring detailed annual
reporting on progress.
During the same speech, Clinton
unveiled ve new funding streams aiming
to target populations that are particularly
affected by HIV/AIDS overseas, touting
a combination prevention strategy of
treatment and prevention.
The ve new funding streams total $157
million:
an accirional $80 million ro supporr
approaches that ensure HIV-positive
pregnant women receive treatment to
protect themselves and prevent them
from spreading the disease to their
children and partners;
an accirional $40 million ro supporr
South Africas plans to provide voluntary
medical male circumcisions for almost half
a million boys and men in the next year;
$15 million lor implemenrarion
research to identify the specic
interventions that are most effective for
reaching key populations;
$20 million ro launch a challene lunc
to support country-led plans to expand
services for key populations; and
a $2 million invesrmenr in rhe FoLerr
Carr Civil Society Networks Fund to
bolster the efforts of civil society groups
in addressing key populations.
Clinton said keeping women in Africa
with HIV healthy is important to keep
them from transferring the disease to their
unborn children, which she said the United
Srares is commirrec ro encin Ly 2015.
A number of female HIV/AIDS advocates
at the conference called for greater attention
to the diseases impact on children. In sub-
Saharan Africa, which has been particularly
allecrec Ly ADS, an esrimarec c0 percenr
of those living with HIV are women.
When women are identied as HIV-
positive and eligible for treatment, they are
often referred to another clinic, one that may
be too far away for them to reach, Clinton
said. As a result, too many women never
start treatment. Today, I am announcing that
the United States will invest an additional
$80 million ro lll rhis ap. These luncs will
support innovative approaches to ensure
that HIV-positive pregnant women get the
treatment they need to protect themselves,
their babies and their workers.
Clintons speech was highly anticipated
amon rhe esrimarec 25,000 people in
attendance at the conference. Organizers
sent attendees to overow rooms a full
half-hour before she came on stage
because the large room in which she was
set to speak was already lled to capacity.
Upon her arrival, Clinton was greeted
with a standing ovation from attendees.
But not everyone received her favorably.
A group of protesters could be
heard shouting at the secretary as she
approached the podium. They held up
a sign calling on Clinton to take Trans
Pacic action against AIDS apparently
out of concern of insufcient funds for
trans people affected by AIDS overseas.
Clinton responded, What would an AIDS
conference be without a little protesting?
We understand that.
Some HIV/AIDS advocates have criticized
the Obama administration for not doing
enough to ght the global epidemic. The
presidents budget request for scal year
2013 curs hall a Lillion collars lrom rhe
Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief,
a program established by President George
W. Bush to confront the global epidemic, as
the White House maintained the program
is doing more with less because of the
reduced cost of drugs.
Despite this proposed cut, Clinton
emphasized new accomplishments for
PEPFAR under the Obama administration,
sayin rhe proram is luncin c00,000
more people since December. She said
this increase means PEPFAR is reaching
nearly 4.5 million people anc is on rrack ro
meet the administrations goal of treating
c million people Ly rhe enc ol 2013, which
President Obama announced on World
AIDS Day last year.
Now since that time Ive heard a few
voices from people raising questions
about Americas commitment to an AIDS-
free generation, wondering whether we
are really serious about achieving it,
Clinton said. Well, I am here today to
make it absolutely clear: the United States
is committed and will remain committed
to achieving an AIDS-free generation. We
will not back off, we will not back down,
we will ght for the resources necessary to
achieve this historic milestone.
Additionally, Clinton said PEPFAR is
reachin more rhan 370,000 women loLally
anc has supporrec more rhan 400,000 male
circumcisions, which has been shown to
reduce HIV transmission, since December.
You know and we want the world to
know that this procedure reduces the
risk of female-to-male transmission by
more rhan c0 percenr anc lor rhe resr
of the mans life, so the impact can be
phenomenal, Clinton said. In Kenya and
Tanzania, mothers asked for circumcision
campaigns during school vacations so
their teenage sons could participate. In
Zimbabwe, some male lawmakers want
to show their constituents how safe and
virtually painless the procedure is, so
they went to a mobile clinic and got
circumcised. Thats the kind of leadership
we welcome.
But as she emphasized U.S. efforts in
confronting the epidemic, Clinton also
called for partner nations to step up their
game to confront the disease in their own
countries, saying reaching the goal is a
shared responsibility.
I spoke earlier about how the United
States is supporting country ownership,
but we also look to our partner countries
and donors to do their part, Clinton
said. They can follow the example of the
last few years in South Africa, Namibia,
Botswana, India and other countries who
are able to provide more and better care
for their own people because they are
committing more of their own resources
to HIV/AIDS. And partner countries
also need to take steps like ghting
corruption and making sure their systems
for approving drugs are as efcient as
possible.
As part of this commitment, Clinton
called on other countries to contribute
to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS,
Tuberculous and Malaria. Obamas
most recent budget request afrms the
administrations commitment to provide
$4 Lillion over rhree years ro rhe lunc,
and Clinton said Saudi Arabia, Japan,
Germany, the Gates Foundation and
others have stepped up their efforts.
Paul Zeitz, vice president of policy for
the D.C.-based ACT V: The End of AIDS,
joined in the call for other countries to step
up their efforts in confronting HIV/AIDS as
he commended Clinton for announcing
her plan to produce a blueprint in the
global ght.
As we all know, money is the oxygen
for action for creating an AIDS-Free
Generation, Zeitz said. Action speaks
louder and we need to make sure that
governments around the world step
up to pay their fare share, including my
own government. U.S. leadership in the
global battle to end AIDS is an essential
catalyst.

Chesapeake Pride
set for Aug. 4
The Chesapeake Pride Festival will take
place at picturesque Mayo Beach on the
Chesapeake Bay in Edgewater on Aug. 4
from noon-6 p.m., rain or shine.
Swimming in the bay, the beach,
stage acts, drag shows, vendors from a
variety of LGBT/friendly companies and
organizations, food, beverages, including
beer and wine are all part of a planned day
of fun in the sun and pride. And for those
who do not want too much sun, there are
plenty of shaded areas to enjoy the day.
Among the attractions, the Straight Eights-
Lambda Car Club, an LGBT group, will feature
its collection of vintage classic automobiles at the
festival, which is a must-see for classic car enthusiasts.
This years entertainment will be as fabulous
as last year, said Stormy Vain who organizes the
drag acts. We are adding a lip-sync contest for
the entertainers to enter as well as the rst-ever
Drag Queen Potato Sack Race that will be held
on the beach after the drag show.
The line-up includes Stormy Vain, Gracie
Freebush, Marketta Minett, Shawanna Alexander,
Veronyka Wynters, Marshall Roberts, Ada Buffet,
Chanel van Cartier Couture, and Mattie Lamar.
2012 will be our best Pride yet! As always
well have great music and a fab drag show plus
a few surprises, said Kim Hinken, chair of the
planning committee. With this being a historic
year for LGBT equality and a huge election
year, community events like Chesapeake Pride
Festival are more important than ever before.
The planning committee has worked very hard
to put together a Pride festival like no other. We hope everyone will join us as we celebrate Pride
in the community.
John Petrosillo, the festivals advertising
chair agreed. This years festival brings
the usual great selection of vendors, live
entertainment, food, beverages and fun.
Among others, we are pleased to have
sponsors Bud Light and Barefoot Wine
returning this year. Our drag show will be
better than ever, concluding with none
other than a potato sack race on the beach.
Our main stage will feature both new artists
this year as well as some popular returning
favorites. We take pride in having something
for everyone, including a protected area for
swimming and a play area for families with
kids. Mayo Beach is a beautiful setting and we
are thrilled to be there again this year.
Park rules dictate that no bottles, cans,
food or coolers are allowed outside your
vehicle. Pets are not permitted.
Visit chesapeakepridefestival.org or
facebook.com/ChesapeakePride for more
information.

Push for National Harbor
casino jeopardizes marriage law
Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley has a
gambling problem. Even though develop-
ers havent even broken ground on some
of the ve casinos already approved for the
state, OMalley is devoting considerable
summer energy to pushing for a sixth at
National Harbor in Prince Georges County.
The owners/operators of the other ve
sites are understandably upset. Some of
those businesses havent even opened and
the governor already wants to approve more
competition for them. If it was so important
for the state to have six sites, why not fac-
tor them all into the original plan already
pitched to and approved by voters?
Whatever the reason, OMalley is
pushing hard and has met with Baltimore
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Prince
Georges County Executive Rushern Maker
and Montgomery County Executive Isiah
Leggett to advocate for his plan. He needs
the state legislature to come back into spe-
cial session and vote on the sixth site by
mid-August to make the November bal-
lot. (Under Maryland law, gambling-related
legislation must be approved by voters.)
But OMalleys insistence on a special
legislative session to approve the sixth site
could carry unintended and grave conse-
quences for the states gay and lesbian resi-
dents. Hes literally gambling with our rights.
If the legislature approves the National
Harbor site, the large corporations that are
already operating or preparing to operate
in the state will spring into action and dump
tens of millions of dollars into a campaign
to defeat it at the ballot. They will target
those who object to gambling on religious
grounds namely conservative black vot-
ers in P.G. County and conservative whites
in the western part of the state. Those are
the same voters most likely to oppose the
marriage equality law, which is already ap-
proved for the November ballot.
If that sounds like hyperbole, take a look
at what happened in Ohio when two casi-
no goliaths went head-to-head in a similar
situation in 2008. Ballot issue 6 that year
pitted two gambling companies Lakes
Entertainment and Penn National Gaming
against each other over efforts to build
a new casino. The two companies spent a
whopping $62.2 million in the ght, more
than double the previous record for most
expensive ballot campaign in Ohio history,
according to the Columbus Dispatch.
That number dwarfs anything the two
sides in the Maryland marriage ght have
contemplated spending. By way of com-
parison, the head of the Marylanders for
Marriage Equality coalition said he can
wage a campaign with a budget of $5-7
million. Coincidentally, Penn National
owns the Hollywood Casino already
operating in Perryville, Md., and a sub-
sidiary of Lakes Entertainment won the
bid to operate the Rocky Gap Casino in
Western Maryland. The two companies
that dumped more than $60 million into
a ght over a single casino in Ohio have
a vested interest in blocking develop-
ment of the National Harbor site, so we
can reasonably expect to see similarly as-
tronomical sums spent here. That money
will be used in large part to wage a so-
phisticated campaign to target and turn
out those aforementioned conservative
voters.
OMalley took the welcome step of
(nally) endorsing marriage equality, lob-
bying for its passage and then presiding
over a joyous signing ceremony of the bill
in Annapolis earlier this year. Of course
marriage isnt the only important issue and
OMalley has to juggle multiple, some-
times competing interests. But in this
case, his push for a sixth casino is reckless
and threatens to undo one of his signa-
ture legislative achievements with little to
no payoff. Sure, supporters of the National
Harbor plan claim the casino will create a
thousand new jobs. But thats far from as-
sured given all the competition from the
ve other Maryland sites, not to mention
nearby Delaware and West Virginia and
their already established venues.
Further, OMalley fancies himself a
2016 contender for president. That race
will likely feature New York Gov. Andrew
Cuomo, who fought for and won marriage
equality in his state and he did it with a
Republican Senate. If marriage goes down
on OMalleys watch, its a black eye for his
presidential ambitions in a year in which
full support for marriage equality will be
required of any serious Democratic candi-
date for president.
And political interests aside, waging an
all-out ght to preserve the marriage law
is simply the right thing to do. OMalley
should put the needs of gay and lesbian
families ahead of the greedy interests of
the tawdry players in the world of casino
gambling.
His willingness to roll the dice with our
rights at stake is deeply disappointing
and once again calls into question the se-
riousness of his commitment.

Anne Stoms vision and
commitment afrm a
growing community
It was two years ago when married
couple Anne Stom and Lyn Stoesen
were walking together to the Metro
near their home in the Park View neigh-
borhood adjacent to Petworth in North-
west Washington, both headed down-
town to their government agency jobs.
It was unusual for Lyn to take the subway
to work, but that morning she made a
discovery about her spouse. Anne knew
lots of area residents, greeting them
by name and exchanging pleasantries
along the way.
Annes partner began chiding her that
she should run for mayor, so many peo-
ple recognized her. Anne cast aside the
humorous suggestion with her easygoing
laugh, but responded by saying What I
should do is open a hardware store.
And thats exactly what she did.
Long before the Feb. 7 opening of
Annies Ace Hardware at 1240 Upshur
St., N.W., residents of both the Petworth
neighborhood where the 7,000-square-
foot former auto repair building is lo-
cated and surrounding environs herald-
ed its planned arrival with celebratory
postings on community blogs. An entire
portion of Northwest D.C. east of Rock
Creek Park above the midtown area
spanning Crestwood and 16th Street
Heights through Columbia Heights
and Park View and north to Petworth
and Brightwood, and stretching into
adjoining Northeast neighborhoods
responded enthusiastically to the an-
nouncement of Stoms undertaking.
Nothing signies that a neighborhood
is destined for continued growth and in-
vigoration like a full-service hardware,
home improvement and gardening store.
Neighborhoods advancing toward broad-
based revitalization and experiencing an
accelerating inux of residents witness the
arrival of new restaurants, bars and retail
projects, spurring additional retail and
other community amenities.
Risk-taking new entrepreneurs like
Stom, discerning a neighborhood need
and business opportunity, provide what
she describes as an anchor to the com-
munity extending beyond the enter-
prise. More than commerce, business
investment yields an afrmation of a
neighborhoods future and consumer
convenience close to home.
Petworth and neighboring areas have
slowly become one of a number of hot
new destinations for District living. Cou-
ples with children and young singles,
including a signicant inux of gay and
lesbian residents, have in recent years
joined local inhabitants. Stom notes with
gratitude that both longtime residents
and new arrivals have welcomed and pa-
tronized her establishment.
Stom was not one who found an Al-
len wrench instead of a baby rattle in
her crib, but she learned the basics
over time living her life. Years ago when
working at Daedalus Books she built
bookcases to hold the library she had
begun assembling. While construct-
ing a simple two-step stair outside an
earlier home she eagerly invested in a
circular saw, a moment she now chuck-
les as symbolizing what would lead to
a stint working as a carpenters helper.
She later volunteered with Habitat for
Humanity homebuilding projects in An-
acostia and grew increasingly comfort-
able with her expanding tool collection
and new avocation.
Seven years ago Stom found her-
self spending evenings and weekends
renovating and modernizing her then
Park View townhouse when not at her
job as project director for the Depart-
ment of Labors national Youthbuild
education and training program for
disadvantaged youth. She recalls be-
ing frustrated that there were no home
improvement retailers in the area and
found herself hopping in the car to
drive across town to a poorly stocked
and inadequately staffed national be-
hemoth warehouse outlet for the in-
evitable forgotten item needed for the
days construction project.
Nestled on the two-block stretch of
Upshur Street separating 13th Street
and Georgia Avenue near the Georgia
Ave.-Petworth Metro station and north
of Columbia Heights, Annies Ace Hard-
ware occupies a prominent and attractive
building among a string of tidy industrial
style structures.
The 12 parking spots outside Stoms
DIY nirvana of more than 18,000 items are
continuously accommodating the arrival
and departure of customers, with ample
curbside parking handy for the surging
stream of weekend shoppers beginning
Friday evenings through Sundays. Two
Zipcars are at the ready, offering either a
sedan or pick-up for the wheel-less won-
dering how they will haul home that shiny
new Weber Grill or lawn rake and bags
of fertilizer.
Its not unusual to nd locals stabling
their bikes at the racks outside for a quick
purchase. Neighborhood residents trav-
eling on two wheels soon discover that
the store also offers a popular bike repair
and maintenance clinic every Saturday
from noon to 3 p.m. conducted by non-
prot Bike House volunteers.
Inside youre likely to run into gregari-
ous staff member Rodney Lancaster, one
of 13 store employees all living nearby.
Sizing up the muscular mountain of a
man, with a professional background
as an auto mechanic, its no surprise
to learn that he was a high school line-
backer playing on the Roosevelt High
School football eld across the street
when younger.
Like many an independent small busi-
ness owner, Stom is hands-on and cur-
rently on-site every day ably assisted
by energetic store manager Brian Smith.
His engaging personality and comfort-
ably competent manner are combined
with signicant retail experience and pre-
vious renovation and landscaping work.
Stom has assembled a diverse and
attentive staff, representative of the
well-deserved reputation enjoyed by
the ve franchised Ace Hardware lo-
cations in D.C. for providing a wel-
coming environment and helpful
customer assistance.
With the stores early success, it would
be easy for Stom to overlook the 19
months of relentless challenges bring-
ing the business to fruition and labori-
ously managing the citys often cumber-
some permitting and regulatory maze.
Informed by her former federal govern-
ment project management experience,
she would advise city ofcials to further
streamline the path to small business
development. She recommends assign-
ing case managers to assist in detailing
the intricate sequencing and extensive
regulatory requirements for opening a
local business. Otherwise, licensing de-
lays are common, backward steps are
necessary, costs increase and obstacles
breed failure.
When a businessperson invests all she
is worth utilizing every available nancial
resource and, in Stoms case, humbly ac-
cepting self-initiated investment offers by
supportive residents eager to see the busi-
ness meet the signicant capitalization nal
funding in a tight commercial lending en-
vironment she is making a commitment
to both an aspiration and a community, to
both economic development and employ-
ment creation. She also takes on the result-
ing responsibilities and risks.
Whether its a local homeowner grab-
bing a big bag of bark chips for a ow-
erbed landscaping project, a nearby
resident popping in for an extra can of
Benjamin Moore paint to nish refreshing
the kitchen, two young apartment dwell-
ers grabbing light bulbs and vacuum
cleaner bags, or a novice needing guid-
ance and tools for a home project a
neighborhood has become more com-
plete and self-sustaining.
All because of a womans courage and
vision and that rst circular saw.

*Each Oce is Independently Owned and Operated
By SEAN GANEY
If your home is anything like the typical
household, nding ways to organize and
store all of your belongings is an ongo-
ing issue and struggle. Most homeown-
ers can never have enough storage and
there seems to be a constant battle be-
tween how much stuff you own and how
much space is available in your home.
The good news is there are a number of
creative ways to address your needs and
nd ways to organize and put your stuff
away.
Consider a family foyer
Designing an ample informal entrance
is a great use of space to provide more
storage for your household. Well-de-
signed walk-in closets can help keep coats
and shoes from piling up, corral sports
equipment or serve as a pantry for extra
food and bulk items. Built-in cubbies can
house belongings for each family mem-
ber, prevent mix-ups and keep the door-
way neat and tidy. Add a place to sit and
also designate an area for wet boots and
umbrellas to help keep the area dry.
Maximize space with under-stair storage
Often, space comes at a premium, so
many homeowners take advantage of all
the square footage they can by utilizing
the space under their stairs. Under-stair
storage is particularly useful for long-term
storage of luggage, holiday decorations
and other items you wont need access to
year round. Sump pumps, safes, security
equipment and shorter water heaters can
also be housed here. Do you nd yourself
wishing you had another bathroom? This
versatile, often unused space can some-
times be used as a half-bath as well.
De-clutter with a storage system
Storage systems are the ultimate tool
in home organization. These systems can
be anything from semi-custom and rela-
tively inexpensive solutions, to fully cus-
tomized products tailored to your spe-
cic needs. A storage system can help
maximize limited space in a standard
closet by creating multiple levels of stor-
age, as well as incorporating drawers and
shelving. Create a personalized space in
a walk-in closet by adding tie and belt
racks to keep accessories organized or
install an open shoe rack to show off your
collection. Make a laundry room more
efcient with custom cabinets, built-in
hampers and a fold-out ironing board.
Garage greatness
Do you have a car enthusiast or a
handyman in your family? Create a
custom space in your garage for all
his tools and gadgets, while making a
functional work area. Work benches,
built-in tool boxes and a peg board for
easy access of tools are a good starting
point. Durable stainless steel cabinets
will give your garage a clean, industrial
look while providing rustproof stor-
age. Consider modifying the ceilings
to accommodate car lifts if doing a lot
of automotive work. When design-
ing a garage, some people choose to
incorporate an extra half bay to a full
bay into the design. This will give you
plenty of room for storing bikes, pool
equipment, patio furniture, etc.
Take advantage of your attic
Installing a room truss system is an
economical way to improve the func-
tionality of your attic space, as the cost
is not much more than building a con-
ventional web truss. Whether you need
more storage, living space or a combi-
nation of both, a room truss creates an
open, habitable area within the lines of
the roof. Consider using the space as a
fun playroom for kids, an out-of-the-way
ofce or a cozy loft bedroom for guests.
Or, perhaps if youre artistic, use this bo-
nus room to create an art studio.
These few examples just scratch the
surface of ways to improve the efciency
of underutilized areas in your home. An
experienced design build remodeler can
provide practical solutions and help guide
you through selecting the best options for
your needs and lifestyle.
