ENTC4335/MEEN4325 HW2 Summer II 2012

1. At a location in Europe, it is necessary to supply 300 kW of 60-Hz power. The only power sources available operate at 50 Hz. It is decided to generate the power by means of a motor-generator set consisting of a synchronous motor driving a synchronous generator. How many poles should each of the two machines have in order to convert 50-Hz power to 60-Hz power? 2. A 2300-V 1000-kVA 0.8-PF-lagging 60-Hz two-pole Y-connected synchronous generator has a synchronous reactance of 1.1 and an armature resistance of 0.15 . At 60 Hz, its friction and windage losses are 24 kW, and its core losses are 18 kW. The field circuit has a dc voltage of 200 V, and the maximum IF is 10 A. The resistance of the field circuit is adjustable over the range from 20 to 200 . The OCC of this generator is shown in Figure 1. (a) How much field current is required to make VT equal to 2300 V when the generator is running at no load? (b) What is the internal generated voltage of this machine at rated conditions? (c) How much field current is required to make VT equal to 2300 V when the generator is running at rated conditions?

3. 480-V 60-Hz Y-connected six-pole synchronous generator has a per-phase synchronous reactance of 1.0 . Its full-load armature current is 60 A at 0.7 PF lagging. This generator has friction and windage losses of 1.5 kW and core losses of 1.0 kW at 60 Hz at full load. Since the armature resistance is being ignored, assume that I2R losses are negligible. The field current has been adjusted so that the terminal voltage is 480 V at no load. Answer the following questions about this generator. (a) What is the speed of rotation of this generator? (b) What is the terminal voltage of this generator if: 1. It is loaded with the rated current at 0.7 PF lagging? 2. It is loaded with the rated current at 1 PF? 3. It is loaded with the rated current at 0.7 PF leading? (c) What is the efficiency of this generator (ignoring the unknown electrical losses) when operating at the rated current and 0.7 PF lagging? (d) How much shaft torque must be applied by the prime mover at full load? How large is the induced countertorque? (e) What is the voltage regulation of this generator at 0.7 PF lagging? At 1 PF? At 0.7 PF leading?

4. A 220-V, three-phase, two-pole, 50-Hz induction motor is running at a slip of 5 percent. Find: (a) The speed of the magnetic fields in revolutions per minute (b) The speed of the rotor in revolutions per minute (c) The slip speed of the rotor (d) The rotor frequency in hertz 5. A 50-kW, 440-V, 50-Hz, six-pole induction motor has a slip of 6 percent when operating at full-load conditions. At full-load conditions, the friction and windage losses are 300 W, and the core losses are 600 W. Find the following values for full-load conditions: (a) The shaft speed nm (b) The output power in watts (c) The load torque load in newton-meters (d) The induced torque ind in newton-meters (e) The rotor frequency in hertz 6. A three-phase, 60-Hz, four-pole induction motor runs at a no-load speed of 1790 r/min and a full-load speed of 1720 r/min. Calculate the slip and the electrical frequency of the rotor at no-load and full-load conditions. What is the speed regulation of this motor.
