Spotlight on MembersBuffalo State College

Submitted by: Laura Hill Rao, Coordinator, Volunteer and Service-Learning Center The Buffalo State College Volunteer and Service-Learning Center (VSLC) was one of the 2011-2012 NYCC Education Award Program (EAP) recipients, and recruited 17 students to participate in one of three program options beginning in January 2012. The VSLCs program provides structured training prior to the start of service, and meets bi-weekly with participants to provide opportunities for reflection, professional development, and collaborative projects among members. The EAP program at Buffalo State has been very successful thus far, with one participant reporting this experience has helped me change my understanding of local issues in many ways, from learning how the Buffalo community deals with immigrants and refugees to how we are supporting our youths in dangerous neighborhoods. The Buffalo State EAP program has three areas of service: community service work study (CSWS) positions, education volunteer positions, and community service internships. CSWS positions provide support for community organization partners through direct support of emergency preparedness, community revitalization, and youth development while additionally recruiting and supporting volunteer and service-learning initiatives at the organization. Education volunteer members are

connected to Buffalo States new Community Academic Center (CAC) and provide homework help and afterschool supports with existing VSLC community partners, while additionally recruiting and supporting volunteer and servicelearning connections. Community Service Internships meet organizational needs while providing students direct experience with not-for-profit organizations and apply capstone learning experiences while understanding the role of community and civic engagement. The EAP program is currently partnering with 15 community organizations, schools, and afterschool programs throughout the city of Buffalo. Partners have reported positive outcomes of this new opportunity. Ontario Street United Methodist Church reported, Our student has been instrumental in shaping and managing the new afterschool program. At times her high level of motivation and enthusiasm have motivated me to keep going in the face of challenges with the new program. The VSLC had been looking for new ways to engage students in civic leadership development, and was thrilled at the opportunity to offer the NYCC EAP program on campus. The EAP program provides that extra bit of recognition and financial incentive that help students make a deeper leap into service, and has been an excellent opportunity for Buffalo State students to connect to the communities surrounding Buffalo State.

Applications Being Accepted for St. Johns University NYCC AmeriCorps VISTA
New York Campus Compact has been partnering with the AmeriCorps VISTA Program since 2003 in order to assist member campuses in developing deep, meaningful campus/community partnerships. VISTAs play pivotal roles in helping colleges and universities address community needs, develop leadership among their students, and improve collaborations between the institution and the community. We are currently recruiting applicants for St. Johns University (see position description below): (start date in October or November, 2012) Position Description: Strengthen community partnerships by implementing programs to meet the needs of low-income residents in and around Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn and homeless individuals in and around Jamaica, Queens. The 2012-2013 AmeriCorps VISTA project will focus on implementing the project developed during the previous two VISTA years. The previous VISTAs developed a longitudinal study to assess the needs and outcomes of Project ID at St. Johns Bread and Life, which assists clients in obtaining legal identification. In the third project year, the VISTA will continue these efforts by administering and analyzing client interviews and surveys at Project ID, and using gathered information to develop needs-based programs and other necessary improvements to the project. In addition, the previous VISTAs developed adult and youth programming at a Homes for the Homeless shelter. This years VISTA will be responsible for continuing the development of youth enrichment programs as well as implementing the adult programs, and evaluating the effectiveness of both. The VISTAs efforts will aid the agencies in meeting their missions of alleviating poverty, hunger, health concerns, education deficiencies and homelessness. The position will be primarily housed at St. Johns Universitys Queens campus although there will be frequent visits to community partner sites in both Queens and Brooklyn to assist with programs and build strong relationships between the University and community partners. The VISTA will work with the Director of the Ozanam Scholars Program to implement community programs and with the Assistant Director of Outcomes Assessment for the evaluations. The VISTA member will expand Project ID poverty alleviation efforts based on client feedback in surveys from year two and provide tools to homeless and low-income youth and adults that will assist them in obtaining skills and knowledge. Math, Science, and Technology (MST) Summer Teachers Institute at Corning Community College
The 2012 Math, Science, and Technology (MST) Summer Teachers Institute was recently held at Corning Community College as well as at various industries and facilities throughout the region. The institute is sponsored by Corning Incorporated, GST BOCES, participating school districts, and Corning Community College. Nearly 30 teachers from school districts in Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben counties participated in the professional development program geared towards grades 5 through 12 teachers. The MST Institute is designed to improve professional content knowledge and enhance teacher competency in the areas of math, science, and technology. The keynote speaker for the institute was Herb Gross, the founding math department chairman at Corning Community College. In his presentation, Dr. Gross addressed mathematics and how it is the gateway to science, technology and engineering. Since his retirement, Dr. Gross has devoted his efforts to working with elementary and middle school teachers to help them achieve success for their students in better internalizing mathematics. The schedule of events included classroom sessions taught by Corning Community College faculty and covered topics including fun with physics, tangible mathematics, and Time Engineers software. Also included in the schedule were local business tours to see how the information is applied and the skills necessary for employment in the field. The teachers enjoyed tours to the Cornell NanoScale Science & Technology Facility, Eaton Corporation, Robert Packer Hospital, and CAF USA. Some comments from teachers who participated included: Very informative and helpful in learning how to help kids choose a career path. And The tours were great! I learned a tremendous amount of information applicable to teach students. Next years institute is scheduled for July 8-12, 2013.
