SPECIFIC COURSE INFORMATION a. Course Description Introduces students to different transmission media and antenna systems used in major communications systems. The operation, analysis and design of major transmission media such as transmission lines, waveguides and optical fibers are given emphasis. Mechanisms by which radio waves propagate over the air and the way they are launched using antenna are described. Operations and design of different antenna systems are investigated. ECE 302 ELECTROMAGNETICS b. Prerequisites ECE 503 DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS NONE Co-requisites c. Course Classification Required (Required/elective/ selected elective) SPECIFIC GOALS FOR THE COURSE a. Course Objective The course aims to: 1. Provide students the theoretical background in the analysis and interpretation of the behavior of transmission lines, waveguides and optical fiber 2. Equip students with the capability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data. 3. Provide students with the needed knowledge and skills in designing and testing an antenna system suitable for certain applications. b. Course Outcomes By the end of the course, the students will be able to: 1. Describe the types of transmission lines and calculate line constants. 2. Explain propagation of signals along waveguides and optical fibers. 3. Differentiate the types of radio wave propagation and be familiar with their applications. 4. Understand the principle and characteristics of the different types of antennas as well as the methodology in the design. 5. Understand the principle and characteristics of antennas, the different types as well as the

methodology in the design of each. 6. Design a wideband antenna (VHF and UHF). c. Student Outcomes Addressed by the Course Students will be able to: a. identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems; k. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of engineering and management principles and apply these to ones own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.
