The mobile network business

The mobile network business is expanding in an increasingly challenging environment. The prices of material commodities, like copper and steel are volatile, and as site infrastructure materials contribute to between 25% and 40% of network implementation costs there is a pressing need to find new alternatives. Because of the challenge of acquiring sites for base stations, there is a need for equipment that can be used in as wide a range of sites as possible sites that are small, remote, or situated in harsh climatic environments, for example. There is also the need to evolve sites to carry multiple operator networks smoothly all the while ensuring long-term sustainability and longevity.

Autonomous sites

Particularly in new growth markets and rural areas, these challenges are intensifying: How do you speed up network roll-outs? How can you minimize deployment costs against commodity prices? How do you ensure reliable electrical supply for base stations? How can you optimize maintenance costs? To address these existing pressures, and those that lie ahead, Nokia Siemens Networks has optimized base station sites with a holistic approach that will revolutionize the way you build your network, and future-proof your installations at the same time. Nokia Siemens Networks Site Innovations solution is designed for speedy network deployment with minimal cost, time and space.

The solution requires 55% less space than four-legged angular towers and has 88% fewer elements, meaning faster roll-out and reduced maintenance costs. Designed for outdoor use with tubular towers, Site Innovations utilize the latest materials for feeder systems with the option of self-sufficient green power sources, like wind and solar power technology. Because of its reduced weight, fewer parts, and use of readily available materials, the solution is environmentally friendly on multiple levels, while lowering your capital and operational expenditure (CAPEX and OPEX) by using less equipment, material with more stable prices, and autonomous, maintenance-free sites.

What is Site Innovations?

Site Innovations is the complete solution for creating the network you want. The solution consists of four features designed for flexible outdoor applications. When used in tandem with Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Base Stations, you can dramatically decrease site footprints and significantly reduce power consumption.

Site Innovations combines the key advantages of:

A Smart Tower A sturdy, flexible design An aluminic feeder An autonomous site

The triangular cross-section creates less wind drag compared to a square cross-section, while the circular profile further cuts wind drag compared to flat-sided profiles. The high-end tube design has the best load-bearing capacity using the least amount of steel, and a higher buckling capacity compared to angular profiles with the same cross-sectional area. This results in the Smart Tower weighing up to 45% less compared to the typical four-legged angular tower. The structure has up to 88% fewer components and uses up to 87% fewer unique elements than a traditional four-legged structure. With 70% less surface area, it takes 70% less time to paint the tower and offers a further 70% savings in repaint costs. These essential qualities enable fast and easy assembly. A 60-meter tower can be assembled and erected at least 20% faster than a traditional structure. With Site Innovations, operators can expect savings of 10-15% in total site CAPEX. In terms of reductions in OPEX, rentals are reduced as less site area is needed (from 12x12 meters to 8x8 meters). Assuming rentals of US$4,000 per site per year, this creates an annual savings of US$1,700.

The site itself is configurable to accommodate all weight loads, climates, and terrains, giving you a definite maneuverability advantage in rural areas. Site Innovations is designed for autonomous operation, which means hands-off, self-sustaining and fuss-free assembly and maintenance. Finally, Site Innovations is designed with sustainable resources and environmental sustainability in mind, which reduces your total cost of ownership. The Smart Tower innovative design in action Functionally and financially speaking, the heart of every well-designed base station site is the antenna-carrying structure or tower. The main component of Site Innovations is the Smart Tower. The Smart Tower has significant advantages over conventional towers. Crafted using some of the most advanced design standards, the Smart Tower is considerably lighter in weight, and composed of fewer elements making it easier to store, inventorize, transport, and install, while requiring a smaller foundation. The key to the success of the Smart Tower is its three-legged tubular design.

Smart Tower

Designed for efficiency

Each Smart Tower is designed according to your antenna load requirements. There are also various options for expanding future antenna load in order to satisfy either new technologies or the need for operator co-location. Antennas can also be mounted directly on the vertical leg members, meaning separate antenna adapters are not needed. Ultimately, this innovative, streamlined design ensures fast and efficient tower deployment.
Weight Up to 45% less weight for same height Best load-bearing capacity for least amount of steel Tower Elements 87% less number of elements 88% less different elements Simpler and faster installation Surface area 70% less surface area Reduced wind drag and higher buckling capacity CAPEX 10-15% savings on total site cost OPEX 40% smaller site area, reduced rentals generate OPEX savings Flexi BTS Flexible, shelter-less installation into the tower Shorter antenna lines and improved RF performance The Smart Tower and Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi BTS base station are perfect partners. Site Innovations is designed for outdoor equipment use, eliminating the need for shelters further reducing CAPEX and OPEX. Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Base Station can be readily mounted at the top of the tower, thereby improving radio frequency (RF) performance. Various tower platform designs are available to satisfy the need for battery backup systems and other third party equipment. Simpler site construction yielding lower installation costs and greater flexibility is just one of the benefits with pairing the Smart Tower and the Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Base Station. The Site Innovations solution enables radio network operators to build new greenfield sites more efficiently, and offers similar or even greater coverage and capacity. As Site Innovations is based on a shelter-less solution, the need for air-conditioning is removed, limiting power consumption significantly. The shelter-less Smart Tower platform also requires shorter antenna lines, improving RF performance and in certain cases the possibility of downgrading feeder dimensions. Nokia Siemens Networks Site innovations and Flexi Base Station offer a very environmentally friendly solution yielding improved performance, energy savings, fast deployment and high quality. Environment 30% less carbon emissions as less steel, concrete and transportation is needed

The simpler, aesthetic look of the tower also makes it easier for operators to obtain building permits. There is also the added environmental benefit of lower carbon emissions, as less steel, concrete and transportation is needed. A case study iin Indonesia has shown that the Smart Tower accounts for up to 30% less carbon emissions than a traditional solution.

Site Innovations to suit all environments

Unlike many base station sites, that need protection from the elements, Site Innovations is designed for use with outdoors equipment. It comes in various flexible installation options: Base tower platform for improved serviceability & flood protection Top tower platform for optimized radio frequency performance Quick-build foundation for remote areas & fastest time to market Feeders* are the cables used as a high-frequency transmission medium to carry high-frequency or broadband signals between an antenna and its base station. Option 2: Top tower platform This type of Site Innovations caters to feeder-less Flexi Base Stations and maximum RF coverage. You can save the cost of your entire feederline system and, with almost 0 dB feeder loss, get optimal coverage since Flexi Base Stations can be located very close to the antenna with a tower-mounted platform. The feeder-less solution also reduces wind load on the tower, as only DC cables, alarms and transmission cables are required. You can install more antennas or carry multiple operators with this configuration because a feeder-less tower bears less load on the tower structure. With the base stations placed on top, equipment vandalism is also minimized. Option 3: Quickbuild foundation This option is best for fast deployment. Time to market can be reduced by 40% compared to conventional deployments. This is perfect for operators who want to get sites on air as fast as possible. It is best for remote sites where the quality of concrete is questionable or access is difficult since multiple variants of locally available ballast materials can be used.

sturdy, weatherproof design

Option 1: Base tower platform This option is suitable where the tower platform is best erected at the base. It is ideal in flood-prone sites, and offers easy service access. There is no need for shelters or base frames. It requires a smaller compound for greenfield sites, and no separate foundation is necessary for the equipment. When combined with anti-climb devices, no site fencing is needed. The shorter feeder* run makes it possible to downscale feeder dimensions thereby reducing costs. The equipment is well protected from lightning since the tower acts as a Faraday cage so the grounding system can be optimized.

Aluminic feeders the future-proof alternative to all-copper feeder cabling

At Nokia Siemens Networks, we strive continuously to ensure that our installations are future-proof and environmentally friendly, even down to the sourcing of raw materials. Feeder line cost is still a major cost driver for the installation of radio equipment. Therefore, on top of the environmental benefits, we have incorporated aluminic feeders to make our Site Innovations more economical than traditional copper-based feeders. This not only lowers your CAPEX, it maintains superior performance in all climates. Performance benefits Aluminum has excellent electrical and mechanical performance, and is fully compliant with standards for copper-shielded feeder cabling. The aluminic feeder gives equal or even better antenna system performance. A low-loss aluminic feeder is very similar to lowloss copper with zero noticeable degradation in network performance so it has no impact on radio performance and coverage. Aluminic feeders are available in all common diameters and come with a UV-resistant and flame-retardant coating. There are two types, either with a corrugated outer wall, or a smooth wall. Environmental benefits: Co-axial cable is ROHS compliant, so it can be safely recycled Softer than copper, making recycling quicker and less costly

The solution is 100% waterproof when properly installed and has enhanced electrical performance. Connections are made using specially designed connectors and stripping tools, along with the standard clamps and accessories used for copper. These are compliant with connector standard DIN 7-16 for low and stable intermodulation. When connections are made using smooth-wall cabling and the recommended connectors, the installations are immediately watertight and do not require further weather-proofing (IP68) This, along with the increased speed of creating each connection, is yet another big advantage. Performance benefits: Equal or better antenna system performance 100% waterproof for improved electrical performance Tried and tested in extreme climates and temperature ranges Slightly better loss value than copper (0.1dB/100m) Lower weight means easier handling and lower transportation cost Stiffer with sharper bend radius for easy and clean installation Commercial benefits: Lower, more stable price than copper Less time-sensitive CAPEX investment and faster deployment Lower weight reduces shipping costs and installation time Less likely to be stolen from remote sites Commercial benefits As copper prices continue to be volatile and relatively stable. From the beginning of 2006 to the beginning of 2008, the price of copper has fluctuated by up to 80%. However aluminum prices have only moved by 20%. Operators are also protected from hikes in commodity prices, which is vital considering their increasing spend on feeder cabling. The low black-market price of aluminum, the most abundant metal found in the earths crust, also means that cabling and grounding kits are less likely to be stolen than copper ones. Further savings are achieved with lower freight cost, installation, and lifting charges as aluminum is 30% lighter than copper. The smooth-wall aluminum solution also offers more sturdy design than copper, has a sharper bend radius, and retains its shape for a more aesthetic cleaner installation. On the environmental front, all our co-axial cables are ROHS compliant, which means that they can be recycled without harming the environment. Aluminum is also a softer material than copper, promoting quicker, less costly recycling by comparison. Nokia Siemens Networks is leading the industry with this innovative solution, which has been extensively tested in some of the harshest climates and temperature ranges. It has now been adopted as standard in all installations and customers are already seeing the benefits.

Site Innovations are designed for low-maintenance autonomous operation

In mature markets, the most cost efficient way to power a base station site is by connecting it to the existing electricity grid. However, in new growth markets, particularly where mobile networks are expanding into rural areas, an electricity grid might not be available. Using diesel generators is clearly problematic as they create copious carbon emissions and require frequent scheduled maintenance and refueling. Furthermore in these times of rising fuel prices, there is a definite risk of fuel theft from remote sites notably in network expansions in low ARPU regions of the world. The Site Innovations solution includes an option for autonomous site operation for offgrid applications to increase your deployment efficiency, lower OPEX, and create a green solution with beneficial total cost of ownership. Power is generated by two sustainable free power sources wind and solar power. Site Innovations can be configured to suit the climatic conditions on the site. Photovoltaic cells are used to convert sunlight to energy, providing all the required electricity for site operation or, when daylight exposure levels are inadequate, wind power is a supplementary source. At current diesel price levels, there is a payback period of approximately three years with no need for generator maintenance or refueling, no concerns over rising fuel prices, and no noise. Operators also benefit enormously by gaining a true green image in local communities.
